Pirates centerfielder Andrew McCutchen proposes to his girlfriend, Maria Hanslovan, on "Ellen," with host Ellen DeGeneres.

It was a scene straight out of a Hallmark holiday movie. The Pittsburgh Pirates' MVP centerfielder, Andrew McCutchen, got down on one knee to propose to longtime girlfriend Maria Hansloven during an appearance this morning on the syndicated talk show "Ellen."

Surrounded by Christmas trees on the set of the show, taped in Burbank, Calif., Mr. McCutchen danced his way over to host Ellen DeGeneres. Likely taped Monday, when Mr. McCutchen retweeted a photo of himself under a salon hair dryer "prepping" for the visit, the interview segued into the Bucs outfielder asking if he could show a video.

Cue a highlights tape of Mr. McCutchen making a diving catch, hitting a home run, and later posing with Ms. Hansloven. The short film concluded with him standing at home plate in PNC Park.

Cue the request that Ms. Hansloven, whom he's dated for four years, come on down from the studio audience and join him on the set.

With a charming nervousness to his voice, Mr. McCutchen produced the classic jewelers box and said he'd always imagined himself proposing to her "so the whole world could hear how much I love you."

It wasn't shouting from a mountaintop, but "Ellen" is a pretty popular platform.

And what of the ring?

As someone who spends a great deal of time on one, Mr. McCutchen knows diamonds. He has been doing advertisements for Orr's Jewelers in Squirrel Hill and Sewickley, so it was only natural he buy the white diamond engagement ring there. He reportedly picked it up about a month ago.

"Andrew and I met and I made a few suggestions," said Duane McConeghy, manager of the Squirrel Hill location. "It's quite a beautiful ring, custom-made. The center diamond is a round brilliant, with a platinum halo design."

Although he would not specify the center stone's size or the ring's carat weight, "it's an important diamond," he said.

Orr's offers a more modest version of the ring.

"Trends come and go, but it is a pretty classic style," Mr. McConeghy said.

After Ms. Hansloven accepted, Ms. DeGeneres handed her a bouquet of red roses. For Mr. McCutchen, there was a black top hat adorned with a Pirates "P" logo and "Mr. 22." The bride-to-be received a veil with the logo.

Congratulations on your engagement, Maria and Cutch! :applaudit:
