Steelers Sign St. Pierre To Active Roster; Release Iwuoma

PITTSBURGH ? The Steelers signed quarterback Brian St. Pierre from their practice squad to the active roster, making him the backup quarterback for Thursday night's season opener against the Miami Dolphins.

St. Pierre (6-3, 230) was signed to the Steelers practice squad on Sept. 4, 2006, after spending the past year with the Baltimore Ravens. He was originally drafted by the Steelers in the fifth round (163rd overall) in the 2003 NFL Draft and then spent time on both the active roster and the practice squad for Pittsburgh. After being waived on Sept. 3, 2005, St. Pierre was signed to the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad on Sept. 22, 2005, and signed to the active roster on Dec. 8.

St. Pierre, who was waived by the Ravens on Sept. 2, 2006, has played in one career game, which was the Steelers' season finale against the Buffalo Bills on Jan. 2, 2005.

To make room for St. Pierre, the Steelers released five-year veteran cornerback Chidi Iwuoma. Iwuoma originally signed with the team as a free agent in 2002. In his four years with the Steelers, he recorded 69 special teams tackles, including a career-high (tied) 19 last year.

Additionally, the Steelers re-signed fullback John Kuhn to the practice squad. Kuhn (6-0, 255) spent part of the 2005 season on the team's practice squad and was signed to this year's practice squad on Sunday, Sept. 3, before being released the following day.

Not a big St. Pierre fan. That dude said no to us last year when we tried to get him off of the ratbird practice squad. I liked Chidi. Is there a chance we could still resign him after Ben comes back?

Makes sense to me. If Iwuoma is still injured (concussion I believe?) he won't catch the eye of other teams, let alone pass a physical. In my opinion it's just temporary until Ben get's back. Then they can bring back Iwuoma without a grievance or a guaranteed salary. It's really not that big of a deal in my book. He'll be back again. Much like Kuhn and Jacobs.

Just my theory/prediction.

I cant believe the steelers just cut my favorite player. im not too happy right now... I think that Chidi is more valuable than Sean Morey.

Why did they even bother putting St. Pierre on the practice squad to begin with?

I am sure to watch him work out and all that... so they didnt have to cut someone else off the 53 man roster earlier if he came in and looked like crap and they didnt want to go with him

It was sort of obvious to me that this would happen when I opened up the PPG this morning and noticed Morey and Kreiwaldt as captains. Last year it was Chidi and Morey.

Temporary move for sure.He wasn't gonna play this week(concussion) and someone had to be cut to make room for St.Pierre.I'm sure Chidi knows the deal and he'll be back when Ben is.

As long as we manage to bring him back, it's all good.

But Chidi rocks.

When Ben gets back, Chidi will be back. I can't see the Steelers going through the season with only 4 CBs on the active roster.
