View Full Version : Staley & Reid Inactive Again For Sunday?

Post-Gazette has this statement from Cowher on roster moves for Sunday:

One potential avenue for trying to remedy the punt-return problem won't be tried. Cowher said he cannot foresee making rookie Willie Reid active on game day to bring back kicks.

Then again, by implication, it sounded as if Cowher may keep Duce Staley inactive again Sunday, too.

"I don't see the makeup of the roster changing that much," he said. "It is hard to get them on the field given the makeup of the team."

The frustration of many of us with keeping Staley on the roster is well documented.

A growing question for me is what is going on with Reid? If you burn a #3 pick on someone who has a decent camp and your return game is woeful, it makes little to no sense to me why a spot cannot be cleared for Reid to play.

To the extent the answer is that we are overloaded with receivers, then why did you draft two WRs with your first three picks and not draft a running back with one of those picks and cut fat Duce?

Y'know, Dan, I just mentioned that in another thread yesterday. One of the reasons Reid was drafted so high was to compensate for the loss of Randle El on returns, or so we were told, yet - he hasn't dressed for either of the Steelers first two games. I haven't been impressed at all thus far with either Coclough or Holmes back there returning kickoffs/punts, so why not give the guy you specifically drafted for that purpose a legitimate shot to help the team with its field position? Reid wasn't listed on either injury report that I can recall, but I suppose I have to digress here as Cowher & Co. are paid the big moola to make these types of decisions, even if we don't understand their reasoning. :hunch:

I have to believe there is more going on with Reid than we know....

Just to put things in persepective here, it's not like Reid is a first round draft pick that's riding the pine. They already have to kick returners in Coclough and Holmes, so I wouldn't read too much into it.

Again, to draw a parallel to the Lions, they have their first round draft pick from last year not dressing for games and not disclosing the reason why.

If there is a team that is not dressing a #1 pick from 2005 I am not shocked to hear it is the Lions :). Of course, citing the Lions' conduct to justify not dressing high draft picks is hardly a ringing justification for that practice.

Unless someone gets hurt I do not see Coclough returning another kickoff or punt this year - his muff of the one punt he handled Monday night is further confirmation Coclough is a turnover waiting to happen.

Given that Coclough needs to be available to play in certain defernsive schemes it is unfortunate he has not been able to step up and handle the kick return duties. Return by committee is a real problem when nobody on the committee can handle the job.

I agree there may be issues with Reid (slow to pick up the playbook?) I just do not recall a #3 pick not dressing for the Steelers in his rookie year.

I dont understand the whole thing with Colclough back to return kicks...what does Cowher see in him?

DOes anyone know if Davenport will be dressing for the game?

Holmes has been less than impressive, I mean he is a rookie and mistakes can be expected, but he looks terrible thus far.

He needs to work on his route running, but that's to be expected from a rookie. I'm also taking into consideration that the whole WR core looked bad against the Jags. From Ward on down.

As for Najeh, Cowher hasn't commented on who will be active for next Sunday's game. I'd have to believe that he will be active.

True, you have a point there. I'm just not convinced as apaprently he turned a nose up at Big Ben in camp when Ben tried to call him. Does he have the right attitude to be a Steeler?

That situation/story is still shady and lacking details to this day.

As for his attitude. Since he's been in camp I've heard nothing but praise from fellow WR's (Ward in particular) and the coaching staff (Cowher in particular). I think I'll take their word for it.

WOW! Thanks for the insight. That's really good to hear, cause hopefully he turns into what they expected. HE has the potential to be quite dangerous.

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall at practise yesterday.
