For the LIFE of me, I don't get why people are worrying so much about the playoffs right now - there's almost an entire half season to play!

They need to redeem themselves after last night's debacle and who better than to victimize than the Leafs?

XT and I are getting pretty pumped up for next Friday night's game! I've missed a few this season because of my surgery and things going on in my personal life but I don't intend to miss another one! Can't wait to see the new seating chart for the Consol Energy Center!

LETS GO PENS!

LETS GO PENS!

i know right, the few games before the all-star break every1 was saying we have turned the corner and that we will have no problems making the playoffs, and after 1 loss everything has fallen apart and we are done for the year. no1yells at the defense when we were winning, even though were some games where Fleury just straight up stole himself.

its a problem yes, but like i said before it has always been a problem and will continue until we address. we are in 9th right now, without our top d-man, Gonchar coming back will sure up two things- power play and the defensive zone

what a shot by Satan to tie it, hoping he will turn it around but i wont hold my breath. still trying to be too fancy on the power play instead of just shooting it, come on Geno u won the dam accuracy challenge pull the dam trigger!!

01-31-2009, 06:56 PM
End of the first period 1-1. 11 shots to 4, getting better, but we need at least 30-35 a game. Great goal by Satan and Pens had several opportunities!
GO PENS!

pittsburghp8baller
01-31-2009, 06:57 PM
nice block by Eaton in the last minute, that Blake line has been giving us some problems.

dam now i got to watch that bum Don Cherry in coach's corner. lets see which Penguin and/or European player he bashes. he can save time and say Evgeni Malkin is a 'pug hog' again trying to take out two birds with one stone

pittsburghp8baller
01-31-2009, 07:24 PM
The PP looks like crap the last two night now. Wow

they were saying on CBC (i have direct TV so sometimes i dont have a choice on which channel i get to watch.) that the penguins power play as been operating at like 9.9% the last few games

that was the old double whoop, turnover at the blue line and then the penalty to cap it. nice play by Orpik on the 2-on-1

T.Richardson
01-31-2009, 07:25 PM
gah!!

pittsburghp8baller
01-31-2009, 07:26 PM
dam 2-1 maple leafs, too much traffic. Garon can only make so many saves on his back, u gotta wake up defense!! Gotta clear that front of the net

steelpride12
01-31-2009, 07:27 PM
Gonna have to shoot the puck and score against the leafs, they just know how to score on the Pens!

there are only so many saves Garon can make...

pittsburghp8baller
01-31-2009, 07:39 PM
so the dude was on the bench and then got out and fought the other dude?

yea basically, the guys on CBC said that it may lead to a suspension because he left the bench and got into a fight in between play. even if it was on a line change.

im not sure maybe, maybe not both players only got five for fighting so thats a good sign

3-1 now, another player left alone in front of the net and garon couldnt get his glove down quick enough

SteelCityMom
01-31-2009, 07:39 PM
Man, somebody has just got to get down there to help Garon out and pick up some of these rebounds...it's getting ridiculous tonight.

T.Richardson
01-31-2009, 07:39 PM
the replay shows only 2 guys on defense...wow..

steelpride12
01-31-2009, 07:39 PM
So Garon just can't be making 3-4-5 saves in a row he needs some back up D!!!

Steelcitygal87
01-31-2009, 07:42 PM

who is Doug Gilmore? I didnt know he was the greatest hockey player..

he had over 1400 points in his career. one of those players that wasnt the biggest in size (5-11 175) but would go out there and do it all, whatever it took to keep him out there on the ice. started out as more of a defensive player but then bloomed into a 80-90 point getter.

Looks like its gonna be 3-1 after the second period. Again there were not many shots in the second period. yes only 6 shots. With a PP too, you should at least have 10. Gotta shoot ALOT in the third if they wanna score and win!

who is Doug Gilmore? I didnt know he was the greatest hockey player..

Don't be ignorant. This is his night. Doug is one of the greatest players to put on a Toronto Maple Leafs uniform. Maple Leaf fans including myself still love Dougie to this day for transforming a laughing stock of a franchise in 1992 to a winning one. Gilmore was the light at the end of the tunnel for Leaf fans that put up with that crap from the 1980s. Leaf fans will never forget Gilmore for what he did for this franchise.

Having said that, Therrien looks like he made a dumb move by putting in a backup goalie against a team that would be jacked up by honouring #93.

steelpride12
01-31-2009, 08:11 PM
GOOOALLLLL!!! A niceee dirty goal from a steal from Cooke and finish push from Crosby for the goal!

Soft and one-shot weak on offense

Easy way to beat the Pens every night - park your big guys in front of the Pens goal and just stand there all night and keep banging them and they crack.

Soft and weak and SLOW on defense.

We need some MEN on this club. Someone who can forecheck, hit, or crowd the net.

We have become last years Sens. A total lack of confidence and discipline.

Wow, that was a GREAT comparison..now that you mentioned that...yep, definitely are similar to the Sens style of play. Which sickens me.

They got totally out-muscled last night....The Leafs kept pounding and pounding the net and just overpowered the Pens.

I was trying to be nice.

I noticed how teams are totally unafraid of Sid and Malkin now too. We have no one who can carry the puck or win the scrums along the boards, so that takes the dump&chase out of the picture.

Tough month coming up - Habs twice, Sharks, Detroit, Chicago, Caps, Philly.

Yep, we'll have to pick up a couple of those tough guys in the trade market. The next month isn't looking any easier.

I'm afraid the only way to play now is to use that evil neutral zone trap and become the debbils.

I don't know why Therrien abandoned that style last night - it was working.

Sid and Malkin are taking WAY too many hits - and no retaliation - that's what's really pissing me off.

Gonna just have to grit our chops and find ways to win games these next few weeks. The Pens cannot be be happy with getting a point or none. 2 points are key and one way of getting them and proving themselves is beating these tought opponents and getting that playoff spot.
If you have noticed the Pens are always 1-2, or 3 at the most points away from that 8th playoff spot, and just cannot finish to get it. It will be like this till the final game and need to push themselves to new levels.

Me thinks it may be time for Therrien to go on one of his public rants again. Seemed to work the last time he did it. Lit a huge fire under their asses.

As I've said many times - I'm not worried about the playoffs right now. Can't get there without winning games, especially against divisional rivals.

I adore Shero - he's done a phenomenal job in getting good players in here, but not giving Ruutu that extra year he wanted in order to re-sign with the Pens is coming back to haunt. Though he was viewed primarily as an instigator, when he was on the ice, no one messed with Sid or Geno. I have become quite fond of Cookie, but he just isn't Ruutu.

right latest trade gust is Sykora for Greg Zannon and prospects. if Zannon would come in he would be second on the team in 'defensive points' (blocked shots+hits) with 215. not the biggest body but he isnt afraid of throwing his body around. could be the answer and we would get some prospects in it, Nashville has one of the deepest farm team in the league.

Top 25 players available according thefourthperiod.com

two Penguins on there and a lot of players the Penguins are accordingly interested in.

he might have too, but its a shame he shouldnt have to do it year in and year out when we struggle, these guys are professionals.

ur still right, its still to early to panic too much. we are still in contention and only one win out of the playoffs. i dont see Florida staying this hot, especially if they trade Jay-Bo, and i really think Carolina and Buffalo are overachieving right now, at least one will start to fade. That gets rid of the 3 teams ahead of us, and then if we win more than half of our remaining divisional games im positive we can at least catch Philly in our division. we dont have to get a top seed, jus have to make it and then hope we catch a great match-up.

hold up there, yeah he scored on his first shift and he made his name getting those kind of goals, but one shift-one goal isnt enough a reason to stick him on the fourth line permantly.

Caputi is likely a top-6 foward, i wouldnt want his progession slowed playing fourth line minutes. if he isnt gonna play top line minutes in the NHL (we know he wont) then he needs to be playing top line somewhere. he has the potential to punch those dirty goals in with sidney crosby

Pheww. After that first period goal, a rough rest of the period. Only 7 shots. 2 mishandles from Fluery. 0-2 on the PP. and Sick of seeing a player try to go straight through the middle of a defense to get to a puck. They get jammed every time. Talbot and Malkin already tried.
Gotta step it up in the second period once again getting shots and killing off this penalty.

True, but he needs to prove that first by playing 4th or even 3rd line for the rest of the season, and see how he progresses. We cannot just put him on the first line, im sure he is not ready for that.

yea, he did such a great job with it last year, but then again Ty Conklin was great with the puck and helped Fleury out. maybe that was part of the reason and now that he is gone he is slacking off?

i dont think he is ready for first line NHL duty either, but sticking him on the fourth line for the rest of season having him doing checking duties instead putting him in scoring situations (like he would have in the AHL) would seriously stunt his growth, he is still only 20 (he is actually a week younger than me!)

at least let him finish off his first pro season in the AHL to show he can handle top line minutes for an entire season and then next season let him earn a spot on the NHL team as 3rd/4th liner and earn his way up (or if they are really committed have him spend at least the first part of next year in the AHL).

jus cause we are having winger problems dont mean we have to rush him

we are also killing ourselves with a lack of communication, on that drop pass by Crosby the first guy in didnt know the puck was coming and let it go by him which left Letang with a tough keep in. then when whitney couldnt clear the puck he got caught up the ice and Gogo went for the hit behind the net leaving the front wide open

Why are the habs winning?! Look at the shots. 24 to 14 favoring them. There getting in front of the net, being more physical and do what they do best passing from behind the net to wide open players in front. Are you kidding defense you should be all over that player checking him, and lifting that stick.

Pens need to stop looking for the perfect cross ice pass and just shoot the puck and people get in front of the net, create some traffic and work for dirty goals. Obviously the PP is not clicking so 5 on 5 is the way to win it.
GO PENS!

More lumbering blundering turnovers in their own zone. Should be 5-1.

14 shots in 2 periods is unacceptable, and they can't even get the puck deep.

Hey Sid - stop with the cutesy blind-behind-the-back-passes and SHOOT THE PUCK!!!

exactly, like Crosby on that 2 on 1, he stops and rockets it over to i think Satan and of course Satan couldnt handle it.

i think the center drive is the way to go, have the center take the puck up the ice into the zone dish it over to the winger and then have the center make a b-line to the net and at the same time jus have the winger fire it at the net and hope the center/far side winger can bang the puck home.

Columbus is very tough, especially if we dont get a lot of shots on net. Steve Mason has emerged as one of the best goalies in the NHL at only 20. if he is able to help Columbus get into the playoffs i dont see why he doesnt get at least some MVP considerations. im sure he already has the rookie of the year (unless bobby ryan stays hot) locked down and has got to be in consideration for the vezinea trophy

6 Philadelphia 50 26 15 9 61
7 Buffalo 52 27 20 5 59
8 Florida 51 25 18 8 58

9 Carolina 53 26 22 5 57
10 Pittsburgh 53 25 23 5 55

That's because the friggin Panthers keep winning. Every game from here on out is a must-win, especially since the teams their chasing have games in hand on them except Carolina (until tonight, anyway). They do have 3 games remaining against Florida, the first one being the day after the trade deadline (March 5) and 2 left vs. Philthy, however they have just 1 game remaining against Carolina, 1 against the Rangers and they are finished with Buffalo. They are going to have to keep winning and get a lot of help from other teams.

I'll take 4 points right now if anyone wants to give them to us.

all we have to do is grab at least a point out of each of the upcoming games, and i think we will be in good shape coming out of this stretch

tough, tough game tonight, but def a winnable game. Columbus is in the bottom part of the NHL in scoring, and Steve Mason hasnt been feeling well this past week and looks like he is tiring from overuse. but if he brings his A game it wont matter that they are struggling in the scoring department.

Finally we face a team with a PP worse than the Pens.

We'll see how that goes.

Penguins Report: Goligoski a Victim of Numbers
http://penguins.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=408262

Alex Goligoski was having a wonderful rookie campaign with the Penguins. Unfortunately, with eight healthy defensemen on Pittsburgh’s roster the 23-year-old blueliner became a victim of the bloated blue line.

Goligoski was re-assigned by Pittsburgh to join the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday afternoon.

“That’s the only reason, numbers,” head coach Michel Therrien said. “There’s no doubt that kid belongs in the NHL. Right now we have eight healthy bodies with our defense. (Sergei) Gonchar is going to come pretty soon. It’s just a matter of numbers. I talked to him yesterday. I don’t like to see young guys like that leave at this time of the year because he was part of the group that had the (second)-best start in franchise history. He was an important player but that’s the way it is.”

Goligoski received tons of ice time during the season in Pittsburgh. However, the Grand Rapids, Minnesota native has been scratched in nine of the Penguins’ last 15 games, and in two of the games he played he was positioned at forward.

“When you have young players, the No. 1 thing is that you want them to play,” Therrien said. “He probably saw it coming a little bit. It’s never fun. We want him to play. The No. 1 asset is managing the puck and making the first pass. We want him to go down there and work on his defensive game, killing penalties and all the stuff that’s going to make him a defensive player.”

Goligoski made the Penguins’ roster out of training camp. He’s tallied six goals and 14 assists for 20 points in 44 games – leading all rookie defensemen. The youngster has also made progress with his work in his own zone.

“I thought he got better defensively,” Therrien said. “He learned really quickly. It’s good news for us. We have a young kid that is ready to step in and having an important role. I think he’s going down with optimism. He learned a lot of respect not only from the coaching staff but from the players too as well.”

> Goligoski’s re-assignment led to some speculation that Gonchar was going to return to the lineup. However, the veteran squashed that idea by stating that he would not play in Pittsburgh’s final two contests of a four-game home stand against Detroit (Sunday) and San Jose (Wednesday).

“No, I’m going to see the doctor on Wednesday,” Gonchar said. “We’re getting closer. I have to be in game shape. There’s no timeframe. We’ll talk to him and go from there.”

Inside Penguins Hockey Episode 9
Off-Day: Coach Therrien (2/7/09)
Off-Day: Jordan Staal (2/7/09)
Off-Day: Brooks Orpik (2/7/09)

Gonchar has been fully participating in practice since he was cleared for contact Monday. He’s been testing his shoulder’s strength and will not commit to a return date.

“I don’t want to tell you anything because I’m not a doctor,” he said following a rigorous practice Saturday afternoon. “(My shoulder is) sore at night and at 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. it starts getting sore and tight. I have a tough time falling asleep because of it. It usually goes away at (midnight). I’m just hoping it’s nothing serious. The doctor said there’s going to be pain anyway. When we see him on Wednesday we’re going to discuss that and see how it is.”

> In another signal that the Penguins are finally getting close to full strength was Ruslan Fedotenko’s return to practice. Fedotenko, who broke his hand Jan. 6, practiced Saturday while wearing a red “no contact” jersey.

“I’m still not strong enough but I’ll take it a day at time,” he said. “I think it was good just to be around the guys and move the puck, read and react with the speed of the practice to feel the pucks. So far, so good.”

Fedotenko did take part in Pittsburgh’s morning skate Friday but only on a limited basis. Saturday marked his first full practice session – though he did not participate in all the drills because of his hand. Fedotenko won’t be able to return to the lineup until he has the strength to battle along the boards and in the corners.

“I don’t want to go if I can’t battle for the puck,” he said. “I can pass and take slap shots. But I don’t want to be a liability out there. It’s a just a matter of time, feeling at least 85 percent, 90 percent so I can go compete and hopefully help the team.”

Fedotenko has worked with Penguins strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar to remain in good condition so that he will be in game shape as soon as his hand regains its strength.

“Physically I think I’m in pretty good shape,” Fedotenko said. “Mike Kadar is doing a great job with me. I’m excited to go with the team and not with him anymore. Nothing against him but I just want to get with the team. I’ll just take it a day at a time and see how it progresses.”

> He said it: Marc-Andre Fleury on what he’ll tell former teammate Ty Conklin before Sunday’s game if Conklin starts for the Red Wings.

“Take it easy on us.”

Read this at another site - I saw this coming a mile away. It's unfortunate, because I agree that he's shown he can play in the NHL and play well, but there's just too many healthy bodies on D, as mediocre-to-awful as they are. He needs to play rather than sit in the press box. I'm still wearing the jersey though, because he's going to be a big part of this team's future...barring a trade, anyway.

yea, im a little mad they waited that long to do it, GoGo is too talented to be sitting in the press box and to settle for fourth line winger, which i never liked him doing.

the only potential trading partner that could use GoGo would be St. Louis. they are still in rebuilding mode and could use a young puck moving defenseman like goligoski. that of course would mean we would be getting Tkachuk or Brad Boyes back, and I wouldnt be 100% thrilled to have either. Tampa Bay is another but ownership has shown to be impatient and would probably go after Whitney

St. Louis has Alex Pietrangelo in their system and he's about ready to make the jump from juniors to the NHL permanently. He didn't look all that bad the few games he played earlier in the season. They will also get Erik Johnson back next season. So I don't know if they will have a pressing need for a young, puck-moving D-man. Plus, I wouldn't want Tkachuk or Boyes in return either - one is old and just about done, and the other can't play defense to save his life. Tampa Bay is an option - if any team desperately needed a puck-moving D-man, other than Colorado, it would be the Bolts, but they will want someone like Whitney who is young and has plenty of NHL experience. So unless a team makes the Pens an offer they can't refuse, GoGo is staying put.

from everything i have seen from Pietrangelo he seems to be more of a shooting d-man and not so much a puck moving d-man. EJ is a complete d-man and can carry the puck up the ice as well as shoot the puck, but im sure St. Louis wouldnt mind taking some pressure on EJ and add somebody else who can move the puck. i forgot about Ian Cole who seems to be turning into a complete defenseman at Notre Dame, he scored 20+ points in his freshman year and was one of the reasons for Notre Dame's rise to an elite team.

ill pass on Tkachuk, and ill be EXTREMELY hesitant to add Boyes. id rather get Colorado or Tampa Bay on the phone and dump Whitney and let Gogo sit in the AHL for the rest of the year

If they do want someone else to move the puck to take pressure off EJ, they're going to want a veteran, not another young guy like GoGo. I also forgot about Ian Cole being in their system - he's going to be damn good when he makes the NHL.

Colorado or TB or bust.

yeah, he had a real good world juniors, he was one of the few that didnt fall apart in that game against canada. he can quarterback a power play but he really excels in his own zone.

if you were Shero, which number do u dial?

They'd be more likely to rape and pillage the Bolts, so I'd give Brian Lawton a call first. If they can't work something out, then I'd call Colorado's GM.

No on Pronger because I have Tomas Kaberle on IR. Frolov...well, it depends on what you offer. I'm a little thin at RW.
