Linebacker Joey Porter said the Steelers already know what San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers is going to do.
"They're not letting him do too much," Porter said. "They're not going to ask him to throw 30 times. They're going to tell him to manage the football game."

Porter doesn't sound too impressed with Rivers.

"We definitely have the scheme to rattle any quarterback," Porter said. "We'll see how he handles it."

? Reserve running back Najeh Davenport is inching closer to the playing field. Davenport, who hurt his lower leg Monday in practice and is listed as questionable, worked out with the team yesterday and showed enough to get coach Bill Cowher's attention.

"Najeh worked today. He felt pretty good," Cowher said. "We'll see how he feels, and we'll go from there."

Davenport has dressed the last two games but has yet to play. Another running back slowed because of injuries, Duce Staley, could also play against San Diego, although Cowher isn't making any guarantees.

? Santonio Holmes was the only rookie receiver taken in the first round of the 2006 draft. So far, Holmes, who starred at Ohio State, hasn't been much of a factor: five catches for 51 yards.

"Sitting back watching, it's kind of tough. But you play in certain situations for a reason," Holmes said. "I feel it was time for me to grow and learn a lot more over the year, than to be out there making all those mistakes early."

he should be unimpressed, how hard is it to turn and hand it off to the best running back in the game. not to tough. al roker could do that. i would put 8 or 9 in the box. have ike taylor lock down kennan mcardell, double gates. make phillip rivers beat me by passing the ball. i dont think he can or will, besides marty shotenheimer won't let that happen. we have a good chance to win this week. and i think we may dominate this game.

al roker could do that.

Dude - Al Roker would have a hard time pulling away from center - he would fall every time..end up looking like Kurt Warner -- they would need to put him in the shot gun

i believe peezy is right to assume that rivers wont have a major game on sunday but he shouldnt underestimate him. rivers is a good QB but we beat the chargers last year when they had drew brees, so i dont see them winning when their team actually got worse.

I wonder if Peezy realizes this is who Cowher really wanted when he drafted Ben. I think Rivers would be even better in our system then Ben has been.

I don't know anything about Rivers. Please explain why you think this.

For Rivers 06 read Roethlisberger 04 and 05.

Funny how he should mention Rivers being a 'game manager' when his own QB had less atts per game in his first and second season.

Rivers Atts/game = 22.7

Ben 04 Atts/Game = 21.07

Ben 05 Atts/Game = 22.3

Yeah, I didn't get those comments either. I knew the numbers before you posted them and that's why I don't understand the "Rivers is only a game manager" talk. The Chargers are the Steelers repackaged in blue and gold. This is going to be a awesome game, one that will likely be settled by a field goal.

Yeah too bad we could not have drafted Rivers. Ben has been a tremendous disappoinment - with Rivers at QB the Steelers would have done much better the last 2 years

The Steelers "D" should be able to contain Rivers. I'm just wondering if they got those mistakes out of their system against Cincy. This should be a great battle Sunday night.

Touchy touchy. I am not saying Ben wasa a bad pick at all, but you are a fool to think HE won all of those games. I just think Rivers is a better fit for our system, thats all. I don't care about last year anymore, I care about the future.

I think this b/c everything leading up to the draft had us taking Rivers. I was really surprised when he went after Eli. Rivers is who Cowher really wanted. I can try to look some stuff up on the draft that year if you would like.

What are you talking about?!

sure Ben hasnt started off great but how would you do if you were in a accident then had your apendix [sp?] taken out. even if your not playing QB for a pro team im sure you wouldnt be 100%

He should be better now that he had the bye week to help recover, same with Polumalu.

and now i finaly get to see Reid do the returning

Sounds like sarcasm to me...I think. Hey Findlayref, do you ever see Leyland or Big Ben around town anymore? I lived in Wood County for a couple of years back in the early 90's.

I did not state Ben was solely responsible for wining all those games, but he ceratinly was on the field when those games were won (while Rivers was holding out and then carrying a clipboard in San Diego). Ben's team won all those games - that is why they call it a system. If the purpose of a system is to win games, I find it difficult to believe that Rivers would have done any better in "our system" over the last 2 years than Ben.

That having been said, since you not only believe me to be incorrect but a "fool" for challenging your opinion (thanks for the nuanced response), please indicate exactly what it is about Rivers that makes him a better fit for "our system," given that his vast NFL experience to date consists of being on the field when the Chargers beat the 2 worst teams in the league and lost to the Ravens this season (I assume you are not basing your opinion on the Denver game last season or Rivers career at NC State). References to specific types of pass patterns where Rivers is a more effective passer than Ben specifically will be appreciated.

And to those posters who apparently did not get it, my prior post was sarcastic - our starting QB played on teams that went 14-1 his rookie year and won the Super Bowl his second year; anyone who seriously contends Philip Rivers would have done any better is not making an observation that is based in reality.

I apologize - you may be correct

I thought Ben would return to form tonight - the last 2 INTs have clearly proven me wrong

I would think so. :tt02:

Good game tonight. I knew once they took the handcuffs off of Rivers, it would really open up our offense. About time.

Porter is a big mouth clown who should give some props to the young QB.
