Is there an NFL sanctioned unwritten moratorium on punting the ball out of bounds?

Instead of pinning San Diego inside the ten we opted for the trick play at mid-field. Why? Because Gardocki's limited style would have yielded a touchback anyway? Why not angle the kick? But then I have never seen Gardocki kick out of bounds. Or anyone anymore.

With the speed the Chargers possess on defense the timing and strategy of that play confused the hell out of me.

punting out of bounds is accepted strategy. its not done so much cause the target of the area between the pylon and the 5-10 yd line is much tougher to hit than say a kicker putting it straight through the uprights. theres a bigger chance of a punter shanking it out of bounds at the 30.
