Steelers cut St. Pierre to sign rookie cornerback

Brian St. Pierre, who declined the Steelers offer to sign him last season because he grew tired of getting cut by them, was cut again today.

St. Pierre, their third-team quarterback, was released in order to make room for another cornerback. Rookie Jovon Johnson, an Erie native who played at Mercyhurst Prep and Iowa, was signed to the Steelers' 53-man roster and likely will suit up for tomorrow's game against Kansas City.

It's been a whirlwind two weeks for Johnson, 22. He signed on with the Steelers' practice squad last week, a week after he and Pitt cornerback Josh Lay tried out for them. Johnson also had just signed to play with the Los Vegas Gladiators of the Arena Football League, negating a contract he signed a little earlier to play for the Erie Freeze of the American Indoor Football Association.

Johnson also spent 26 days in training camp with the New York Jets, who released him Aug. 27. Although just 5-8, 177, Johnson intercepted 17 passes for the Iowa Hawkeyes, one short of the school record.

The Steelers have lost two cornerbacks over the past two weeks -- Ricardo Colclough to a mysterious neck injury and starter Deshea Townsend to a hamstring injury in practice Wednesday.

That's why St. Pierre never resigns.

What can St. Pierre expect. He's a backup.
