Peyton Manning Taunts Tom Brady with ESPY Award

LOS ANGELES--Patriots quarterback Tom Brady stormed out of the ESPY awards Thursday night after being mercilessly taunted by Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who won two ESPY?s for his performance during the 2004 season. Witnesses said Manning waved the prized statuette in Brady?s face until the Super Bowl MVP could take no more. Afterward, Manning was unapologetic.

"Hey, to the victors go the spoils, baby. If he won it, he would?ve been doing the same thing,? said Manning, still clutching his two ESPY?s. ?Yea I?ve had to sit around the past few seasons and watch him win three Super Bowls, but now I?ve finally got my vindication. Take that, Mr. Super Bowl MVP. Now who?s laughing??

Manning won ESPY awards for best NFL player and best record breaking performance. Brady, on the other hand, won nothing.

?All I ever hear about is how great Tom Brady is,? Manning said. ?It?s Tom Brady this and Tom Brady that. But you know what? Who?s walking out of here with 2 ESPY?s? That?s right. It?s me, Peyton Manning. Look at this thing. Isn?t it gorgeous? It?s the most prestigious award a person can win, next to an MTV movie award or a Krispy Kreme employee of the month merit badge.?

When reached for comment, Brady confessed to being jealous of Manning?s awards. Though he has won back-to-back Super Bowls, the coveted ?NFL Player of the Year? award remains elusive.

?It?s just so upsetting. It?it hurts, OK?? Brady said. ?I don?t understand why I?m not good enough to take home this award. Doesn?t ESPN like me? You don?t understand how bad I wanted to hear Matthew Perry--who was my favorite Friend, by the way?say the words ?And the winner is?Tom Brady.? It would?ve been the highlight of my career. This is the kind of thing you dream about when you?re a little kid -- standing in front of a bunch of celebrities and receiving an illegitimate award.?

Brady said he had a great time at the party before the ESPY?s, but the after-party was ?torture.?

?Hanging out at the Playboy mansion before the show was great,? he said. ?I met P-Diddy, Jessica Simpson, and the guys from Entourage. Then after the show there was another party thrown by ESPN and I had to hang around while Peyton was flaunting his ESPY?s. Then he started posing with them and doing this celebratory dance and the whole time he was looking right at me. I guess I should just be happy he only won the two awards. If he had taken home the Under Armour Undeniable Performance Award I would?ve jumped off a bridge.?

The ESPY?s were created 13 years ago as a way to pay tribute to the athletes and teams who excelled during the past year. The show has grown into a star-studded extravaganza that attracts the best and brightest from the worlds of sports and entertainment.

Maura Mandt, producer of the 2005 ESPY?s, says that for many athletes, winning an ESPY is more important than winning championships.

?The ESPY awards are so much more than just some cheezy, league sponsored trophy that crowns you a ?champion? or a ?winner,?? said Mandt. ?We have famous people, we have musical performances, and we have tons of memorable moments. Our host this year, Matt Perry, actually dropped his pants in front of the whole audience. Can you believe that? Those are the kind of wacky, unscripted antics that make the ESPY awards so special. Of course it stopped being funny when he masturbated on the podium, but that?s why we?re on a four-day tape delay.?

Tom Brady is well aware of the importance of the ESPY?s and he?s resolved to take the trophy home next year.

?I hate myself for not winning the ESPY this year, and I hate Peyton Manning for taking it from me,? said Brady. ?But this kind of thing only strengthens my resolve. I am a man on a mission now. The past few years, I admit, I just haven?t been focused. But this has been a real wake up call for me. Next year?mark my words?I will be standing at that podium, tears in my eyes, clutching that ESPY above my head for everyone to see. Then all those Super Bowl championships will finally pay off.

Hate is such a strong word. Why would you hate Tom Brady? This guy exemplifies everything that is right in a football player today. He is a classic overacheiver who had to earn his playing time in the face of the golden boy at Michigan and then earned his way from the bottom to the #2 in the QB chart and waitied for his time. Bledsoe got hurt, and this kid did everything his coaches and teammates asked.

In addition, he causes no issues off the field, took far less money to stay with his team (hello loyalty), always defers compliments to his teammates and takes the blame when things go wrong.

There are so many other athletes that hate could be used for like T.O., Randy Moss, Ricky Williams, Shockey, etc.. I guess it's me, but I used to remember the day when Brady's attributes were a thing to admire, not the me-first attitudes of todays athletes. We used to root for an underdog. Guess not anymore.

But go ahead, keep "hating" Brady. I could see you not rooting for him, and not liking the fact that he is a part of a team that has caused you a bit of recent playoff loss, but overall, the guy is pretty decent.

I think you can use hate in the same way people "hate" Jeter. America likes a little flash so I wouldn't be surprised if more can't get along with his low key business only approach all the time.

It was definately funny...but pretty transparant as Manning probably wouldnt be that stupid to say all that for real unless he was purely joking..and even then, paybacks are hell!

Funny you brought up Jeter, because that is the exact comparison I use for Brady as well. If anyone should "hate" Jeter it should be me, the Red Sox fan, but I don't. I respect the hell out of him.

I wish he was on my team in a sense (not that I don't want Edgar), but I hate the fact that he competes against my team if that makes sense. How can I hate him? Again, hate is such a strong word. In a competitive sports sense I dislike him, but I think he is a stand-up guy, who carries himself very well on and off the field and is a role midel for kids. Gotta respect that and admire him.

Very true Dirty...I am the same way with Brady...I respect him and the way he carries himself with class. However, when talking in the competitive world of sports...I can't like him on the field for obvious reasons...even though he has my respect there too!

Dirty, you are right...I shouldn't hate him. And I truly don't....It's the frustration from losing to him talking. He is a class player and if we didn't have Ben, I'd want him on my team.

Aye!

And don't get me wrong, there are athletes out there that are worth hating for valid reasons. Ricky Williams leaves his team at the alter, T.O. leaving his teammates out to dry by calling them out publicly, etc..

Boo Hoo Tom Brady, go get a life! Good for Peyton! I like how he said "I had to sit back and watch him win 3 SuperBowls!" HAHA! (One of which the Pats shouldn't have been at!) This just makes me dilike Tom Brady even more!

Actually Manning has been known to comment about his kicker in the same tone so this could have been real.

I can't stand Tom Brady as well. He is just as arrogant as T.O. or Randy Moss, only he does it in the way he carries himself. Not by words.

What?!?! This is projection, pure and simple. I understand you don't like the fact that he beat you, but please spare me the "I can tell he is like T.O. by just how he carries himself" line. What is it in how he carries himself that is bad? Is it how he accepts the blame for losses, or how he deflects praise to his teammates when he wins? Is it all the charity functions he goes to in Boston? Is it how he never has run-ins with the law? Is it how he keeps a low profile in the off-season? Please inform us.

Explain it, because otherwise this is pure sour grapes. I nominate this for the worst post thus far.

What makes it so fake, besides the fact that it just is, is what they have Brady saying, not what they have Manning saying. Like, Brady saying he's jealous. Never happen amigos.

Patriots camp starts Friday. That makes friday the end of the Steelers season.

Hey AvoidLLoyd - I feel we are not making the most of your talents on this board - with your inate ability to read others body language so accurately you might be better employed sitting at a championship poker table.

Either that or you are psychic, if this is the case you will know exactly what I am thinking about you and your post right now.....
