Steelers report: Notes, quotes

--Noah Herron could become the most viable late-round draft pick to compete for a job in training camp in years. Herron was Pittsburgh's last draft choice, the No. 244 overall, from Northwestern. He has the looks of a strong third-down back and they also want him to try his hand at fullback, where they have gone without a true backup for several years.

Herron (5-11, 224) rushed for 1,381 yards last season (5.0 average) and caught 36 passes.

"We talked to him about playing both spots, halfback and fullback," said backs coach Dick Hoak. "He's a good, solid player. He's been very productive there. He can catch the ball. He can do everything."'

--With the loss of 6-5 1/2 Plaxico Burress, the Steelers top receiving group has turned into the smurfs with 6-foot Hines Ward and a pair of 5-10 wideouts, Antwaan Randle El and Cedrick Wilson, bidding for the split end job. Into this group steps 6-4 Fred Gibson, the team's fourth-round pick from Georgia.

"He has height, jumping ability and the speed to go along," said Bruce Arians, the team's receivers coach.

What he did not have in college and continued not to display in the spring is consistency. Gibson drops too many passes.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"When everybody picks you as a favorite, you get a little bit lackadaisical, just going out there and going through the motions. We understand we have to put in the hard work." --WR Hines Ward.

if herron makes the team and fills a backup spot at FB, that will make cushing expendable again. WE have enough TE on the roster now, and between kreider, haynes and herron, we'd be set at FB too.
