Cowboys release shaky Vanderjagt, sign Gramatica
ESPN.com news services

Mike Vanderjagt's short, but rocky. tenure as the Cowboys' kicker is over.

ESPN's Ed Werder reports that Dallas has released Vanderjagt and signed Martin Gramatica to replace him.

The most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history, Vanderjagt, who signed a three-year contract worth nearly $6 million as an unrestricted free agent this spring, has converted only 13 of 18 field goals. That's only two fewer misses in 11 games as the nine-year veteran had in the past three seasons combined.

In his eight seasons with the Colts, a tenure sometimes marked by petulance and marred by a long-standing feud with quarterback Peyton Manning, he converted 87.5 percent of his field goal attempts.

In case anybody ever doubted that football is just as much mental as it is physical -- Mr Vanderjagt should be a case study -since his miss in the playoffs last year, every 25 yard field goal has become a major event for this guy....

It's like a nightmare - he keeps reliving the horror of the Pittsburgh playoff game with each kick...wide right, wide right, wide right, - he's gonna end up like Finkel from Ace Ventura

That's "liquored up idiot kicker."

Personally, if I ever run into the guy, I'd give him a big ole smacker right on the lips and say "Thanks for the memories!!".

A man who was recently dubbed the most accurate kicker in NFL history is now unemployed.

Sources have told FOXSports.com that the Dallas Cowboys have cut kicker Mike Vanderjagt and will sign Martin Gramatica.
Vanderjagt has been very inconsistent this year, and an inconsistent kicker and Bill Parcells are like oil and water.

With the Colts, Vanderjagt was nearly automatic but suffered interpersonal problems after he ripped Peyton Manning on TV only to have Manning fire back and call him "liquored-up idiot kicker."
