Ben Roethlisberger said he appreciated what Ravens linebacker Bart Scott did in Sunday's game. That might raise a few eyebrows, considering Scott temporarily knocked the Steelers quarterback out of the game with a sack from the blind side. After the Steelers' 27-0 loss, Roethlisberger said that was probably the hardest he had ever been hit. It could have been even worse, he said Wednesday at the Steelers' South Side practice facility.
"He could have put me out for awhile," said Roethlisberger, who was sacked nine times in the loss that dropped the Steelers to 4-7. "He could have hit me under the chin with his helmet, but he had a very, very clean hit, and I guess that's a thank you to him. It's a credit to him that he didn't hit me illegally."
Neither Roethlisberger nor his teammates seemed too interested in talking about what went wrong in the Ravens game.
"It does me no good or anybody in (the locker room) any good to rehash it or go over it," guard Alan Faneca said. "It's all about moving forward."
? The Steelers had a moment of silence for Johnnie Bettis yesterday morning. The father of former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis died Tuesday at the age of 61 after suffering a heart attack.
"They have our condolences from (Bettis') extended family with the Pittsburgh Steelers," coach Bill Cowher said. "I know it's a very close family, and (Bettis' parents) used to be at every game, and the hotel. You almost felt like they were part of the team."
Roethlisberger said: "Obviously, Jerome being the class act that he is, he got it from his parents, and I know the Bettis family well, and Mr. Bettis was an awesome guy."
A public viewing will be held Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. at Messiah Baptist Church in Detroit, and a funeral service will follow the viewing. Donations can be made to The Bus Stops Here Foundation c/o Johnnie Bettis Jr. The address is Chase Bank, 28660 Northwestern Highway, Southfield, MI 48034.
? Outside linebacker Clark Haggans (hip) was upgraded from questionable to probable, even though he didn't practice yesterday. Center Jeff Hartings (knee) also didn't practice and is listed as probable.
? Buccaneers tight end Alex Smith (ankle) and running back Michael Pittman (hamstring and shoulder) missed practice. Also questionable for the 4:15 p.m. game at Heinz Field are cornerbacks Will Allen (ankle) and Juran Bolden (shin), linebacker Shelton Quarless (knee and ankle) and defensive tackle Ellis Wyms (ankle).
