PITTSBURGH -- The following is a transcript of a report by Team 4 investigator Jim Parsons that first aired Dec. 7, 2006, on WTAE Channel 4 Action News at 5 p.m.

We know the Pittsburgh Steelers will take the field Thursday night against the Cleveland Browns, but the big question is whether linebacker Joey Porter will be taking the witness stand on Monday.

A Team 4 Investigation reveals that Porter's cousin is scheduled for a drug trial in Pittsburgh next week, and Porter is listed as a witness.

It all stems from an arrest in which police found drugs in Porter's car.

Porter's cousin, Merial Reid, was arrested in a drug sting over a year ago. On the day of the arrest, Reid was driving Porter's car, and police found drugs in the vehicle.

But why haven't you heard about this case until now? Because Porter's name doesn't appear anywhere in police or court records that were made public.

The day after Porter's cousin was busted driving Porter's sport utility vehicle, Porter was talking about the impending damage he planned to deliver to San Diego Chargers quarterback Drew Brees.

"Any quarterback can be rattled," said Porter. "Don't let him tell you that a quarterback cant be rattled. I have not met a quarterback who likes a linebacker in his face."

But one day earlier, Porter had state police and U.S. Postal inspectors in his face, asking him why his cousin was driving his gold GMC Denali.

According to the police complaint, the investigation started when postal employees intercepted a suspicious 5-pound express package shipped from Las Vegas to a house off Larimer Avenue in Pittsburgh.

Undercover detectives watched the house and when three men drove up in a GMC Denali and went inside, an officer, dressed as a postal worker delivered the package, which contained several pounds of high-grade marijuana.

Inside the house, according to sources close to the investigation, police seized a loaded Smith and Wesson pistol, a holster, a sunbeam scale, several bags containing marijuana and a brown cardboard box addressed to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Sources close to the investigation told Team 4 that when Reid was arrested with his two codefendants at a house on Carver Street, Reid told police right away that he needed to get a hold of his cousin, Joey Porter, at the Steelers' practice facility, because Porter was expecting Reid to pick him up after practice. Instead, police got a hold of Porter and got his permission to search Porter's SUV.

Inside Porter's SUV, police found a bag of marijuana in the middle console, along with a wire transfer for $100 to Las Vegas, Nev. Police did not charge Porter in the case, but two sources told Team 4 The DA's office has listed him as a witness in Monday's trial of his cousin and the two other men.

But it turns out Porter might be spared the witness stand on Monday. Reid's attorney, Robert Del Greco, and the DA's office said they are negotiating a plea agreement with Reid and his co-defendants. So if they decide to plead guilty, Porter would not be required to show up at court.

Incidentally, just two months before Porter gave the keys of his sport utility vehicle to his cousin, Reid pleaded guilty to an illegal firearms charge in Pittsburgh and got 18 months probation.
