View Full Version : Porter Modesty On No Pro Bowl Selection

I frankly do not know what to make of this surprising burst of modesty, except that during the Christmas season maybe even Joey Porter turns down the volume:

Linebacker Joey Porter, who leads the Steelers with seven sacks, did not make the Pro Bowl for the first time in the past three years. He made three of the past four Pro Bowls.

"I didn't have the year I felt I could have," Porter said. "But, at the same time, it just didn't happen for me. It didn't bother me that much. I think a lot of outside linebackers played good this year, and lot of guys had better records. The guys who made it deserved it."

Seriously, I am glad to hear Joey admit that he did not play to his previous level this season, just as I am glad to hear Porter and other Steelers state they have only themselves to blame for what happened this year. They could have taken a page from Cincinnati's book and claim without Ben's injuries they surely would have won it all but that is not what I have been reading.

Instead, this self-critical attitude hopefully will result in a focused offseason and big bounce back in 2007.

i gotta think next year the whole team will find their fire and play the 1st half like they did these past 5-6 weeks. then nov. and dec. usually take care of themselves. the players definitely arent too far off. we got the same thing going on that the patriots had to begint the century. hopefully WE can be the thorn in a team like san diegos side for the next few years.

Just shows that even with all the show-boating this guy is a class act. It also shows that the Steelers are a very special organization.

O yea Joey Porter class act! thats a good one! on the bright side maybe this will lower Porter's value for next season and make him less inclined to hold out. I doubt it though; probably Porter will be a no show at training camp and perhaps all season.

I could see a training camp holdout but players rarely give up paychecks by not making it into camp in order to get paid when the regular season starts. Porter will be in uniform next September.

:tt02: First of all ... I like Joey and I hope that he is back next year. Its the bull sh$t that he talks all the time that I dont like. Just play ball and let your play speak for itself...

You really don't know much about the organization if you think that. The Rooney's will NOT repeat NOT negotiate a contract with a player if they are a holdout. Ward was reminded of that. There is NO WAY Porter will hold out in the season. All it does is add one more year to his contract if he stays out the entire year. If not, he loses money, then comes back and plays under the same contract. Period.

He isn't that stupid.

You don't agree? I do. He's definatly a class act. He's a brother of his brother and a leader of his team. He talks smack to anyone who talks smack to him and embarasses the fvck out of anyone who fvcks with him or any of his team mates. I cannot think of one thing that I do not agree with that he has done...

Joey Porter is a loyal man. That is all.

Well, I agree that I want Joey back. But, I don't mind the trash talking as much, as long as it doesn't get too out of hand. Joey is a class act, but this is almost always blurred by the negative media attention he gets from things that aren't even that big of a deal. However, knowing and reconizing that he does have class, makes his modesty and self critique not that big of a deal in Joey's terms, but in the media's terms for finally reporting something good and positive about him. I guess when they can't get any negatives they desprately go to postives.

Yea....Porter will look great in Siver and Black....he can go embarrass their franchise....The STEELERS don't need a player like him...he can be replaced thru the draft.

You see, I don't really think he embarrasses the franchise at all.

Me either, I mean yeah, he can say some pretty stupid stuff sometimes, but that's not a reason to dump him. He may not be the best LB in the league, maybe not even on the team, but he is a very good one, and one of the vocal leaders of the team. He will be sorely missed if he decides to go.

I think it would take a while to get used to Joey not being there.

Porter's performance is on the down slope, but he is under contract for one more year and the Steelers are not brimming with LB depth. Unless it is a cap space move, I doubt they would get a high enough draft pick (if we have picked up on his decline you can bet league personnel specialists have) to get sufficient value for a trade.

I think Porter is gone after 2007 but will be back next fall and hopefully have a good salary drive season to impress his next employer.

Good post Dan and I wholeheartedly agree.

I also don't feel Peezy is an embarrassment to the franchise, but sometimes he does get a tad carried away with his yapping before the game. Tough tackling instead of tough talking.

When they interviewed him about not getting into the ProBowl, Joey replied, "All those people that didn't vote for are just a bunch of fags anyway." :sofunny:

Remember back to last season, Porter was having a mediocre season. Then when we went on a run, he was on a run, he was untouchable. Its time to turn it up a notch

All I can say is I know every single one of you praised Joey last year on Jan. 14th in the last quarter of the game, where he came up with two big consecutive sacks on Manning to seal it. Face it, whether you like Porter or not, agree with what he says or not, he is a hell of a player.

And what is this talk that his play is on the downslope? Are you kidding me? Don't sit back in your computer chair eating your chips after your 8hr day at the office and tell an NFL player who has trained and prepared his whole life for football that his play is on the downslope...are you honestly serious? Just because he isn't coming up with huge sacks every other game doesn't mean his play is any worse...he is a good player, and he can come up big in the big game when it matters.

Hopefully Joey can prove me right tomorrow.
