DENVER - Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning, police said.

Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed.

Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization.

"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.

Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said that a little after 2 a.m., the white Hummer limousine that Williams and two others were traveling in was sprayed with bullets from a vehicle that came up along its side. All three people in the limousine were hit. They were taken to area hospitals, where Williams was pronounced dead. The other victims, a male and a female, were not identified. Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.

Williams, a second-round pick in the 2005 draft out of Oklahoma State, started nine games as a rookie due to injuries. This season, he took over as the starter for Lenny Walls alongside Champ Bailey, and was second on the team with four interceptions and tied for third with 86 tackles.

On Sunday against the 49ers, he had a sack, a forced fumble, and led the team with seven sacks.

Jackson said police were searching for the suspects and interviewing witnesses.

williams was a rising young playmeaker with potential star power. he was a key piece to their playoff run last season i heard an interview or 2 with him on sirius and he really sounded like a humble young man who was honored to play alongside the master, champ bailey. i hope his 2 little kids are looked after well.

of course the rumors will fly. the ones theyre trying to dismiss on sirius is that drugs were involved, and that javon walker was in the limo. it does seem that walker was at the same club though.

Adam sheffield was just reporting they were at a party and on their way to Allen Iversons party and rubbed up against some gang bangers at the first party Brandon Williams the Bronco's WR suggested that the guys should get out of their and leave, they did leave. They got in the car and the gang bangers supposedly followed them outside and began firing shots. He does say that this info hasn't been confirmed but did say that Williams died instantly and either died next to or in the lap of Javon Walker. He said details are still sketchy and unconfirmed. Later at the Broncos facility Javon Walker was seen with blood spattered across his shirt.

reports are saying that javon walker was in the limo with him. this picture would seem to confirm it. also were reports that there was a verbal altercation at the club they were at but williams WAS NOT part of the altercation.

i hate to say this but it seems those bullets were meant for javon walker.

i was listening to the dipalo show on 9.23 free fm and he said something interesting that his shooting is some how tied in to the joey porter shooting in denver. both were shot with the same caliber bullet. he was convinced it was the same guy doing these shootings and what not.

my advice is stay far away from denver as humanly possible.

Arrested Man Questioned About Williams Case

(AP) DENVER Police arrested a 23-year-old man Friday and plan to question him about the shooting death of Denver Broncos player Darrent Williams.

Willie Clark was arrested for a parole violation after his name surfaced in the investigation, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

"We're not calling him a suspect at this time," Jackson said.

Jackson said they have questioned more than 50 people since Williams was shot as he drove away from a New Year's Eve party at a nightclub in a stretch Hummer limousine.

An "associate" of Clark's also had been contacted but released, Jackson said.

"I hope he is a valuable individual that will help assist us," Jackson said of Clark. "I hope that he'll make a difference for us in solving this case."

In Fort Worth, Texas, Williams' family huddled around a home computer following his visitation service to watch the police news conference on the Internet.

Police won't say whether they know the motive for the slaying but have said there was an altercation at the club.

Clark's arrest came a day after police officers found a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe they believe could have been used in the drive-by shooting.

A person close to the investigation told The Associated Press the SUV is registered to Brian K. Hicks of Denver, who is jailed on unrelated drug and attempted murder charges. The person declined to be identified, because state law prohibits officials from identifying whom a vehicle is registered to.

Police would not comment on whether Hicks, 28, had agreed to be interviewed or whether gang involvement was suspected in Williams' death.

Hicks has been jailed since Nov. 9 on a charge of possessing drugs with intent to distribute. He also is accused of shooting at a woman who was later killed a week before she was to testify against him.
