Surgery to stabilize linebacker's neck yields optimistic prognosis.

Linebacker David Pollack could play for the Bengals in 2007. That word came from Pollack's agent, R.J. Gonser, this week.

Gonser told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that doctors have told his client that Pollack could be on the field as soon as next season.

"That's (Pollack's) goal," Gonser said.

Pollack had surgery last week to stabilize his C-6 vertebra, which was fractured while he made a tackle in the Bengals' Sept. 17 game against the Cleveland Browns.

Gonser told the paper the procedure wasn't as ominous as doctors first thought it might be. He said Pollack is expected to wear a neck brace for about another month.

Pollack has said he's prepared to stop playing football.

"It's a very real possibility that I won't play again," Pollack said in October. "At the end of it, if the doctor says I'm 5 percent more likely to get injured again, there's a 0 percent chance I'll ever play again. That's a fact."

Pollack learned he needed surgery during an appointment with his doctor Dec. 13. He had surgery last week.

Gonser told the Journal-Constitution that if all goes well and if Pollack is assured he has no greater risk of injury than any other football player, he'll play again for the Bengals.

"The biggest thing initially was, was it going to be life-altering?" the agent said in the interview. "He was lucky enough to be in a position where he could have a normal life, and then it was a football question. Now the football question is looking good."

Gonser did not return repeated phone messages left Tuesday at his Kansas City office.

Pollack, 24, played in 16 games with six starts for the Bengals. He was the 17th overall pick in the 2005 draft out of Georgia.

Is it worth it? I mean the risk of a more serious injury, just come back to a team that sucks!

I mean really it's not worth it for a chance to be on a Super Bowl contender...but the bungles....here's my advice, become an announcer - you can't be any worse than collinsworth!

The Bengal organization doesn't deserve a player with Pollack's character.
