A little birdie says Colts coach Tony Dungy had a long conversation with the Rooney family, which owns the Steelers, and sold the Rooneys on hiring Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin as their head coach.

Nice story but it is my understanding Dungy does not have the warm fuzzies for Dan Rooney after he was let go as defensive coordinator in the late 80s.

From what I know of Dungy, I'm sure those feelings have been swept aside. I'm not sure about AJR II but Dungy is a better man than that to hold such a grudge!

For what it's worth, this topic came up on Sports Beat with Stan Savern a few weeks ago. Bouchette was on and he stated that the bad feelings from that incident still resonate to this day. Once again, take it for what it's worth.

I take anything from the media with a grain of salt. I'd rather take the opportunity to get it from the horse's mouth.

And I've got a connection that just may be able to get the answer. I'll let you know if I get one (but I will wait until after the Super Bowl).

i just don't believe that tony dungy is that kind of person...holding grudges are contrary to his belief. again, i think this is conjured up by the media who doesn't understand what drives dungy, that being his faith.

Considering the tendency of the media to try and create stories rather than report them (and nowhere is this truer than in the sports world), I'm inclined to agree.

I highly doubt that he would hold a grudge that long myself. Tomlin also got good reviews from Andy Reid, and Ray Childress.

General consensus on Dungy's character from his colleagues in the NFL and the media types that cover him are that he's an all around stand-up guy.

That being the case... whether or not there's some deep seated resentment against the Rooneys from the past... I tend to doubt that he'd let that stand in the way of helping one of his proteges advance his career.

He may or may not have made that call... but I'd tend to believe that he would have made it if Tomlin asked him to.

Nor do I feel Dungy would let it get in the way, but that doesn't mean there is still isn't some resentment. It's not as if Bouchette was typing up an article to sell papers when he made the statement. It was brought up on Savern and Bouchette simply voiced his opinion on the situation between Dungy and the Rooney's. I doubt Bouchette is going out of his way to start one of those infamous "media conspiracy" stories. Frankly, I believe some are just a tad bit paranoid in that department but that's a whole other topic.

Would I be surprised if there is still some resentment? No. It's not just Ed Bouchette who I've heard this from. At the same time I don't believe it's on the level where Dungy would go out of his way to insult the Rooney's nor do I feel he has a Art Rooney II voodoo doll hidden in his closet.

Well,

Don't you usually call references for jobs?

It wouldn't surprise me that Dungy and Rooney talked.
