View Full Version : A. Smith.....Cap Casualty

DE Aaron Smith could be a CAP casualty this year if he doesn't rework his contract. According to - http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review/sports/steelerslivextra/info/salarycap.html
He's scheduled to get $6.86 mil this season. With the Steelers at the bottom of the list (30th to be exact) once again, we will struggle to land any decent players in FA. There are 19 teams with at least $20 mil of Cap room, while the Steelers have 1.4 http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/numbers.asp There are many players who have not played well enough to earn these checks and Hartings stands out the most. Personally, I hope he retires and free's up some cap space.

I think you will see Harting retire....and I am hoping Deshea will be gone...Starks is another who has players looking over his shoulder...so who knows...maybe Coach Tomlin has a big broom to help clean up our salary situation.

Just remember, Tomlin isn't the top "power to be" that makes the cap room. What's sad is that if they don't do something soon about it, then we are going to lose some key players because of it!

When i initially saw the thread headline I ws trying to figure out how Anthony Smith would be a cap casualty in his second year.

There is a certain outside linebacker who is scheduled to count around $6 million around the cap in 2007.

I believe Hartings will retire and that Porter is far more likely than Smith to be a cap casualty since Smith's performance did not drop off and Porter's did.

2008 is when the big changes in personnel will hit.

Let's just hope that the players become team players and renegotiate or take less of a salary to stay together and win multiple Super Bowls. Ok, so I took a moment and flew to never never land!

The flip side of that is that Porter's presence will go a long way in making the coaching transition work the best; he's the guy on the field that everyone else follows. I say you keep him, and I also say that you'll see him back at 2005 level next year.

Porter was a definite leader during the SB run. But if he continues his 2006 policy of starting and ending every interview with how he has outperformed his contract and does not report to the start of training camp unless a new contract is done (I don't think any calls from Cowher in Raleigh urging Porter to report will do the trick) his presence may be a mixed blessing in the coming year.

i don't think aaron smith's going anywhere. my guess is that townsend will be gone...hartings will retire...mike barr will be the new punter freeing up some of gardocki's money...and porter or simmons could be a cap casualty. but i don't think this team needs to make drastic changes - just more focus and discipline and ATTACK on defense!! (meaning: they need an impact sack player to put pressure on the QB).

I also thought this mean Athony Smith. We have too many Smiths on this team....

Anyway, I think Hartings will probably leave, and although it's sad to see him go, I think it's his time to. Also, isn't Gardocki taking up some room CAP wise too? I would like to see something done with the LBs CAP wise as well, I'm not really sure what yet.

Every year someone comes up with a question mark and they restructure. I don't think Smith is the type of player to give us any problems restructuring anyways. He'll go with the flow IMO.

I too thought it was Anthony Smith. I was curious to see how a 2nd year guy could be a cap casualty already

not sure i'm willing to give up on wilson just yet. he's been a disappointment, but we have no one ready to fill in for him. (depth chart appears to be ward, holmes, and washington without him - that scares me a little).

maybe arians will be able to include him more in the offense since he was the WR coach?

Hopefully, we'll have...

Hartings: gone
Wilson: gone
Gardocki: gone
Starks: gone

Plus at least one DB (Logan?). We've got too many of those guys back there.

That ought to free up enough space to keep the guy -- at least, one would think.

Thing is, I would rather give him up as well, for very good DB and a decent DE.

I really think that our CB's need the MOST attention this offseason, followed by our OL.. however, I think we have the personnel to fill in our OL sitting on the bench right now.

Cutting Aaron Smith would not be a wise move. Nor would it be wise to move Porter this year. When his contract is up he can walk but not yet. He is needed as a vocal leader

I'd rather keep Townsend if he restructures

Cedrick Wilson should get the boot, Hartings will probably retire, Gardocki will go too, Logan will be gone

Then there is the Running back situation...do you let Davenport go or re-sign him and let Haynes go, but we really can't keep both

I also think that it might be time for Starks to take a walk...just give him the mid-offer so we get a pick out of the deal

I realize everybody thought that it was Anthony Smith, but Aaron Smith is a little more important to this team. We need him.

porter is nothing more than a mouth. cutting porter will be the same as when the steelers cut gildon. the guy is old, inconsistent, overrated and overpaid.

i really like davenport - i'd keep him over haynes if i had to choose (if the money is there, but he might show some loyalty in that the steelers gave him a chance).

i'm torn on porter...for a guy who wanted more money he sure didn't play like it. he's not worth $6 million, so he's certainly not worth more.

I disagree! Porter is playing at a much higher level than Gildon was his last season here. But if either Porter or Smith leaves, it will be a huge void to fill.

Both Marvel and Aaron could be asked to redo there contracts this year. Marvel with more of a cap hit then Aaron.

If we would cut Porter before 6-1 would be great. 5mil more we would have to play with.

If we would cut Gardocki before 6-1 would get us almost another 1mil and open up room for a new fresher leg in Matt, which would help the ST out.

Casey Hampton could also be asked to re work his contract do to the big hit we have from him of over 6mil.

Farrior, Faneca, Keisel, Kirschke, all others that could also re work if needed to free up money.

Aaron Smith is one of, if not..THE most underrated DE in the entire league. Unfortunately he doesn't get the pub that other DE get because we run the 3-4. If we ran a 4-3 (do ya hear me Mike Tomlin??) his name would get mentioned right up there with Seymour. This guy consistently gets double teamed and still finds a way to the ball. With that being said, the man needs to end his career with the Steelers.

i meant if porter leaves or gets cut it won't affect the defense in a negative way

it will most likely have a positive affect.

In 07 the loss of Aaron would far outweigh the loss of Anthony but it's a moot point. Anthony Smith is under contract for 2-3 more seasons.

I think he'll restructure.

slashsteel

I agree Dirtt. Anthony has a long way to go to show the consistancy that Aaron has shown for us.

I don't think you will see Porter or Starks cut or let go. Starks has the skills to improve, and Porter wants to stay a Steeler and will take less IMO to stay. The media is the one who ( no surpise) that twisted things to the point where some think he only will stay if he gets a bigger contract. I am one of the ones who think otherwise.

slashsteel, porter will NOT play in Pittsburgh for a lesser contract.... it is a business... this will probably be the last contract he ever signs.... he WILL go to the top bidder.... and it wont be the Steelers
