Well, we used to have cheerleaders back in the day, but we got rid of them. If I remember correctly, it was because they were deemed a distraction and not needed.

If I recall, didn't the Steelers use to (or still do) bring in high school bands for the halftime shows? (Sorry- it's been a while since I've been to a game)

And didn't those HS bands bring their own cheerleaders? That would seem more cost effective for the Rooneys.

Im all for having Cheerleaders earn their money by getting on the field for trick plays like the 'Double D Cheerbabe Option Pass'

I can think of a number of 'distraction' plays that might work too!

For those who are wondering 'just what am I missing out on?' - here is a link to a short (22mins!) video taking an in depth look into the challenging, high pressure world of the Dolphins Cheerleader calendar.

If your looking for a cheerleading rah rah team you're barking up the wrong tree. We are a blue collar. hard nosed, Jack Lambert -throw your ass down violently- kinda team. We don't need any stinkin cheerleaders. Our fans represent better than any NFL club, our FO is the class act of the NFL. Our team has won 5 SB's. The NFL dreads putting Steeler HOFers in because we all ready have more than our "fair" share. If you want to watch "Daisy Duke" catch a Dukes of Hazard rerun. If you want to watch blue collar, we jacked U-the F-up football team, tune in Sundays and catch what the Black N Gold are all about.

I'll have to disagree with the NO's on this one. A few weeks ago, my eye candy addiction led me to watch a couple episodes of the NFLN's Cheerleader challenge. How I wished the Steelers were in there with the rest of the league. For those who have never seen it; 4 squads get together and compete in one physical, one NFL knowledge and one cheer event. Winner goes on to some type of championship event (i wasn't interested enough to follow it that far--- eye candy addiction is fleeting).

My favorite parts were the physical and knowledge challenges. In flag football, it would be great to see a Steeler cheerleader put a nasty hit on one of those Dallas Cow****s. I'm pretty sure they would also destroy the competition in the NFL knowledge area as well. It's amazing how little most of these cheerleaders know about the league that pays their salary.

In any event, that's my vote for Cheerleaders. Agree that they're irrelevant to the game, but that's a given.

I watched that show and was so happy there werent any cheerleaders for the Stillers. These girls must try out every year to make the cheerleading squad and knowledge of the game or performance in flag football is not a determining factor in wether or not they make the squad. Im glad that there isnt some airhead wearing black and gold presenting herself as a representative of the team I love.

Cheerleaders rank right up there with mlb mascots the only time you need or pay attention to them is when you have an inferior product on the field.

When I go to heinz I dont want anything to take away from the game. However on the rare occasion that I have attended an nfl game that the Steelers havent been participants I appreciated the cheerleaders and the wonderful distraction they brought to the game.

What we need is a bunch of Overweight, big-armed, big-bellied, ex-steel mill type of men to stick on t-shirts that are just a tad bit too small and rise up... Britney style!

Put hard-hats on them, and on thier exposed belly's, put THE BENGALS SUCK (regardless of what game it actually is).

You cant hear the cheerleaders, if you dont sit in the low corner seat yopu cant see them either. My sisgter in law was a Falcons cheerleader for six seasons, the perks for me were cool. Lot's of great answers, and reasons not to have cheerleaders here in the thread. I think it just comes down to a cost cutting move. The Rooneys only spend money they have to.

I'm not complaining, just making an observation.

At this point for me, I really don't care. If the Steelers decide to get cheerleaders tomorrow the world as I know it won't end nor do I see Heinz Field crumbling if a cheerleader steps foot on the field. I'm also capable of watching the game without being distracted by cheerleaders. The fans will still cheer loud and the players will still play just as they would if they did (or did not) have cheerleaders. The same goes with the "logo at center field" question/complaint.

If they ever get them, great. If they don't, great. Not that big of an issue in my book.

I used to ask taht same question. This year at a game, I was chatting with a gentleman from Pittsburgh. I asked him the question about the cheerleaders, and he said that back in the 70's or 80's a well known Player got a cheerleader pregnant. This player went to Mr. Rooney and told him what had happened. The player was married and Mr. Rooney was concerned about the team image and paid the Cheerleader off and to go away. They then got rid of teh Cheerleaders.

Here ya go; Steelers Cheerleaders last Season was 1969 so he gave you some wrong facts.
Cheerleaders and Mascot

The Pittsburgh Steelers made NFL history by having the first cheerleading squad for a professional team in 1961. The then-director of Steelers entertainment, Mr. William Day, was also the vice president of Robert Morris Junior College (now Robert Morris University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Morris_University)) in Moon Township, Pa. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_Township%2C_Pennsylvania), decided to use women from the school as cheerleaders for the Steelers. They were known as the Steelerettes. [1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Steelers#_note-0)
In 1969, the Robert Morris women cheered their final season. With Robert Morris now having its own football team, interest in the Steelers on campus had dwindled. [2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Steelers#_note-1)
Now, the team that began the tradition of sideline cheerleaders in the NFL does not have its own squad. In fact, according to an About.com article, the Rooney family believes cheerleaders are pointless and are just blocking the spectator's view. [3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Steelers#_note-2)
