Elbie Nickel, named the Steelers' best tight end when they picked their 50th anniversary team, died of Alzheimer's disease Tuesday in his hometown of Chillicothe, Ohio.

Nickel, 84, played for the Steelers from 1947 through 1957 and made three Pro Bowl teams. His team record of 62 receptions in 1953 stood for 16 years. He caught 329 passes in his career, ranking fifth in Steelers history and the most by a tight end.
