You know the deal.

Who do you guys feel about this upcoming series with the Astros?
I'm feelin great about it, it reminds me of the very fist Pirate game I went to back in 3 Rivers
and I want the same score as we had then, 5-3 Pirates.

This is tough for me, because I'm an Astros fan as well as a Pirate fan. So I don't know what to do...:dang: :dang: :dang: I guess I'll choose what I would do if the Steelers played the Texans:thumbsup: :tt02:

Hey, the Astros had enough wins from us last year, they can give us a few this year.:wink02:

Were looking pretty good so far, we need to get these guys off the bases though

Nice win. Very exciting for a baseball game. But I can see it now...

Bob: Caller, hello.

Caller: Bob, I told yinz all dat dis team is the real deal. Over .500 here we come!!

Bob: Caller, it's one win. It was a nice win, but let's keep things in perspective.

Caller: Still, this just goes to show yinz that McClatchy, Littlefield and the Nuttings know what their doin'.

Bob: Okay caller. Continue chugging that IC and call me back in a month. *Click*

It was funny watching Smizik on the Nightly Sports Call last night. He couldn't get the words out of his mouth fast enough after Pompeani brought up the Pirates. I thought he was going to dry hump the camera man.

The guy is a riot when it comes to talking Pirates baseball. Thankfully there is still John Steigerwald.

Thanks for the laugh Smizik....

We are the sole owners of the Divison lead, lets run away with it, we've shown are talent by sweeping the Astros, we can be a good competitive team if we stay hungry and motivated.

Buccos --- 3 - 0
Brewers-- 2 - 1
Reds ----- 1 - 1
Cubs ----- 1 - 1
Astros ---- 0 - 3
Cards ---- 0 - 3

The Pirates showcased they have a talented team capable of competing. Now they have to prove to all the Pittsburgh fans that they're SERIOUS about winning. It's only 3 games out of 162, even though sweeping the 'Stros in Houston is awesome. But they have to do what the 2003 squad couldn't do: FINISH.

Please Stay hungry Bucs! Say no to 15.

It was a nice bounce back win today for the Buccos. Duke for the most part owned the Reds today. He got in trouble in the 7th but for the most part was flawless today.

It was nice to see Eldred hit the ball today. He had a HR and double plus knocked in two. It was great having Sanchez back and he had a nice start to his season. Plus Jumping Jack Wilson had a good day with the bat hitting his first homerun of the season. Plus Jason Bay hit his second on the year.

The bullpen was solid and Capps is one of the best late inning relievers in the game. Plus Torres netted his fourth save.

Beat'em Bucs beat'em Bucs and lets take two out of three against the Cards in the home opening series of the season.

Well, a 4-2 start isn't anything to sneeze at. But there are still some major concerns that need to be rectified and soon (LaRoche striking out 3 more times today, Armas getting drilled yesterday, Maholm's first inning woes continuing, Duffy not getting it done in the leadoff spot...again). Let's see how they do against St. Louis, who have been really struggling until their 10-1 win over the suddenly hapless Astros today.

Borski
04-09-2007, 04:06 PM
I'm getting sick of Adam LaRoche, he better get a hit now, along with Freddy and J. Bay can follow that up with an HR to tie the game in the 9th

S.O.P.

Same old Pirates.

There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for not winning the last 2 games when your starters give up a grand total of 1 run in 14 IP. Bay and LaRoche are killing this team right now, especially LaRoche. Where are the hits? Where's the power? All I'm seeing is a bunch of o-fers and Ks from both of them. And I just knew that Torres was going to blow a game sooner or later - I'm just surprised it wasn't sooner.

This team just isn't very good, folks - let's face it.

I only saw a little of the game but it seemed to me that the Bucs didnt do alot of the little things that win tight games. I forget what inning it was but there was a guy on first with no outs and not one batter attempted to move the runner over via a sac bunt or fly. It seemed everyone wanted to be the hero and go yard. Bad baseball just young mistakes though that are easily corrected. On the bright side the pitching staff held a potentially potent offense in the Redbirds to a minimum for a long time. They do have some talent and Laroche will come around and add some pop. Dont give up on your team so fast They may yet still keep it interesting in the Central.

Edman

The Pirates are REAL lucky this isn't the old NL Central of the past and everybody else is stinking right now. They're still tied for 1st Place. They play in a crappy division and they STILL can't get things going.

If there isn't one thing wrong, it's another about the Bucs. It's frustrating.

The Bucs are a young talented team, playing in a beautifull ball park with great fans! Things could be alot worse. Look at the other baseball team in Pennsylvania. Besides the recent implosion against the Mets I watched a part of a game last week when the moronic fans actually assisted the Brave bullpen by throwing beer bottles into centerfield. Thus giving the lefty more time to warm up and then come in to pop up Ryan Howard.

Thats baseball. Its a very long season filled with highs and lows. Last May my team lost over 200 rbi's due to injuries. I was ready to give my tickets away when all was said and done they won the division with plenty of room to spare.

Jeremy

It's still April. Ryne Sandberg used to get off to horrible starts in April. They're at .500 and the starting pitching is doing well. The offense will come around.

It's kinda tough not to throw in the towel when you're seeing the same garbage baseball that we've seen over the past 14 seasons. It wears on you and gets to the point where it isn't even worth getting upset over it. Yes, I realize that we're only 8 games in, but these are the Pirates, and losing is what they do.

Don't take this the wrong way, but it sure must be nice to root for a real baseball team with a real chance of winning every season.

The only piece of optimism I can give right now is that they might actually have the best starting pitching in the division. I don't think there's any other team that has more than 1 or 2 starters that they know they can count on - the Pirates have 2 and maybe 3 if Gorzelanny keeps pitching the way he has in his first 2 starts. But it won't matter one bit if the team can't score runs, and eventually that will start to affect the starters, who'll feel as if they can't make any mistakes and end up doing exactly that.

Its kinda disappointing being 4-4 after a 3-0 start, but as said we're only 8 games in and if we can stay motivated, with how weak this division is this year this is our best chanch of being competitive.

After this year we'll probably lose a starter or two and be in the basement for another ten years unless the FO does something to get real, good, prime players.

I say if we Trade LaRoach to the Rays for Cantu, I'm sure he can convert to 1st base and he has good power. and we should try and pickup a good relief pitcher.

I was just trying to let you guys know that from an outsiders perspective it doesnt look that bad yet.

I'm against doing anything with Tampa because of their highly questionable fron office. I wouldn't trust them to do a deal that has fair value.

2 years ago I would have jumped all over Cantu but he doesnt seem to be the same player. Not as much hustle and too much hacking away at the plate. He used to be willing to take what was given to him. When he couldnt drive the ball he would slap it the other way which made him a tough out. Now he wants to pull everything. Real hard to do with a cutter in on your hands.

Jeremy

Just as an FYI, Brad Eldred is in the starting lineup at first base today.

In his defense, he missed around 50 games to an injury last year and was rushed back to soon, I think he's still a really good player and hes only 25 I think, so he has plenty of years left to play.

steelerbackr4life
04-11-2007, 03:54 PM
Wow it was just like last game. They had a chance but they just seemed a little anxious at the plate. You know that pitchers will purposely give guys that have good eyes and power like Bay nothing out over the plate that they can jack when they know the other players behind him dont have plate discipline.

steelerbackr4life
04-11-2007, 04:14 PM
I still think that there is definitely the potential there for the Bucs to compete in that division. Alot of impatient ABS. As the season goes on and it becomes warmer a pitcher isnt going to be able to make those same mistakes the way Wainwright did today. The Bucs have shaky pitching but their D is tight. They should be in alot of games.

I feel your pain though guys that was frustrating to watch. But as long as they arent facing the Bombers Im rooting for them!

Being back at .500 is pretty nice. I still remain cautiously optimistic. I really have no choice, especially since the Pens are on the verge of having their season possibly ended tomorrow. At least the the NFL Draft is in a week. After that, It's all Pirates. That is if the Pens aren't eliminated.

Good that they won, and that the much-maligned LaRoche drove in the winning run, but if they had a half-decent closer, they'd be over .500 right now. 3 blown saves for Torres is unacceptable so early in the season - two of which cost Ian Snell wins. Give Capps the job - a 0.79 ERA as the set-up man. Enough said.

Borski
04-26-2007, 01:57 AM
I agree, seems every time I turn around Torres is blowing a save. Are there any half decent closers in the free agent market?

X-Terminator
04-26-2007, 02:18 AM
They have 2 candidates on the team right now in Capps and Chacon - not many people remember that Chacon saved 35 games for the Rockies in 2004. So he has experience in the closer's role. At this point neither he nor Capps could do any worse than Torres.

83-Steelers-43
04-26-2007, 07:39 AM
I gave up a long time ago trying to figure out the idiocy which permeates throughout the Irates organization (from ownership down to the bat boy). But you have Capps come in during the 8th and he puts the Astros down with no problem. Why not ride him in the 9th?

Jeremy
04-26-2007, 09:39 AM
This is ridiculous. 3 blown saves already this season. This team could be 11-8 if it weren't for his blown saves. Time to dump this stiff and go with a close by committee.

Torres: 10 IP, 8 ER, 7.20 ERA, 3 blown saves
LaRoche: 8-70 (.114 AVG), 3 HR, 9 RBI, 26 K

Gonzalez: 8 IP, 2 ER, 2.45 ERA, 0 saves (Wickman is ATL's closer)

Yeah, I'd say it's looking pretty bad.

I'm still holding out hope that LaRoche eventually starts hitting the way we thought he would coming in. Problem is that even when he does, he probably won't do well enough to get his average much above .250.

Yeah I'm not expecting a work of art, but it seems like the Penguins put the same head on each one and then distinguish each one by the name and number on the jersey.

Well 12-12, once again, we're back to .500 folks!

Sadly I can't really comment much on this game since it wasnt on TV, FSN needs to show all the games, not re-runs of old boxing matchs

Who would of thought that by the end of April the the Brewers and Pirates would be the the leaders of the division?

I "watched" the game on MLB Gameday - Paulino doubled in Bautista in the 7th to tie the game at 2 and Bay homers in the 8th with 2 outs to give them the lead. Capps pitched a scoreless 8th to pick up the win and Torres gets the save.

I know I wouldn't have predicted the Brewers and Pirates would be 1-2 in the division at this point either, but I knew that the NL Central would be weak. That 4-game series in Milwaukee this weekend will be quite interesting, to say the least.

I live near Chicago so I watched the game. Nice win by the Buccos. Hey I'll take 12-12 right now. The young pitching has been solid so far for the most part. If the hitting can start to improve that would be sweet.

Bay homered and LaRoche was 1 for 3 with an RBI. I know LaRoche is still batting .133 but I'm hoping he turns it around soon.

Actually I'm quite content with 12-12.

Maybe the Pirates may finally break through after all. I started to give up when they were 6-10, but unbelievably, they came back. I expected them to stay 4 games under and get worse. But they didn't.

Nice looking first inning, two bunt signals load the bases, walk gets in a run and a error scores two more

Cubs - 1
Pirates - 3

end of the first

Well folks, after tonight, it looks like real Pirates baseball is back. Armas pitches 6 solid innings, leaves with a 3-run lead, and the bullpen blows it. Unfortunately the game was merely suspended rather than called, so they'll have 3 more innings in which to further screw things up.

We will...blow another lead!

We will...blow another lead!but hey! maybe "we will" only lose by one run and top that stat from last year. now thats something to root for

"but we were so close in so many games". you gotta love selling hope. do the ushers pass around offering plates at pnc park yet. if not its an idea that may work...

LOL well, actually they've done pretty well in close games - they're 9-5 in games decided by 1 or 2 runs. The problem is that when they lose, they usually lose big - 3-7 in games decided by 3 or more runs. That's because they can't hit worth shit, and their starting rotation in many cases has been able to keep the games close enough to give then a shot. But when they finally DO score some runs and get a big lead, in comes the bullpen to piss it down the toilet. It really is a miracle that this team has managed to win 12 games, which really speaks to just how pathetic the NL Central is except for Milwaukee.

I think they have a better chance coming back tomorrow then they would have trying to hit in that rain. can we use a starter to pitch "relief" tomorrow since its only 2 innings it shouldn't effect the rotation.

The lineup at the end of this month might look very different from how it looks now.

I'm sure there will be some type of "excuse" or weak ass explanation, but how in the hell do you take Doumit out of the lineup? He is batting .407.

Further proof of the idiocy. BTW, 3-0 Brewers in the 4th and Maholm was just pulled.

Ah, the Bucs are back to being their pathetic selves. These are the Pirates I've been accustomed used to seeing: A reoccuring laughing stock of the league and sports world. Our pitcher plays bush league, gets ejected, we lose, and the Brew Crew are laughing their anuses off.

So Tracy benches him because he was not hitting. That's fine. Puts him back in the lineup and he get's three hits. Nice. Then he benches him the next game...lol.
