View Full Version : Mel Kiper's Big Board Is Knocked Over!!

BRISTOL, CT?NFL officials and ESPN executives made an emergency announcement Tuesday stating that the 2007 NFL Player Draft may have to be postponed indefinitely, as draft guru Mel Kiper Jr.'s Big Board, the index-card-laden bulletin board used to catalog, rank, and track every single player in the draft, was accidentally knocked over late Monday night.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h218/n_mckeown/kiper.jpg

"I just got up from my seat at the table to get a cup of coffee, and I must have hit the Big Board with my shoulder," said Kiper, holding up a loose stack of cards bearing players' names, positions, and schools printed in his distinctive block letters. "Now, the entire draft has been jumbled all together and no one is sure what player should go when. We might have to wait until July for me to get everyone back where they belong."

"Look at this," Kiper said, gesturing to a table where his Big Board lay uncharacteristically horizontal and bereft of player rankings. "It's not supposed to be like that. Not supposed to be like that at all."

Since the Big Board's introduction in 1984, it has served as the ranking medium for all top NFL draft picks. In its entire 23-year history, the Board has never before been knocked completely all the way over.

"This is much worse than the 1995 'bobble' of the Big Board that saw five players' names from the mid-first round come unpinned and flutter to Mel Kiper's floor," said Buffalo Bills general manager Marv Levy, who was woken by aides and told of the knock-over only minutes after it occurred. "We weren't sure whether we were supposed to draft Warren Sapp, Ruben Brown, Mark Fields, or Ellis Johnson. In the end, we had to guess, and Sapp went to Tampa Bay. I don't want this to happen again, to anyone."

Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a call for calm from an NFL office besieged by frantic phone calls from journalists, scouts, teams' front offices, and the agents of almost every player on the board, all of whom insist that their client was listed toward the Big Board's top.

"While this is a huge setback for football, we will still be holding the draft in an orderly fashion," Goodell said. "We may have to delay it for a number of weeks, but one way or another, we will work with Mr. Kiper to recover as much information as possible related to player rankings. The full resources of the NFL are, as usual, at Mr. Kiper's disposal."

Meanwhile, Goodell says he has requested that ESPN search through recent footage to see if the intact Big Board can be seen in the background of any shots or if Kiper appeared on the network discussing draft rankings at any time.

"We're in bad shape, but all is not completely lost," said Kiper, shuffling through the stack of rumpled index cards he managed to salvage from the area of his floor where the board fell. "I'm reasonably sure that this 'Calvin Johnson' fellow was up near the top, for instance. He's a wide receiver, though, and I'm not sure I'd rank a wide receiver first. And there's a young man named Okoye here whose name I remember? 19 years old, though, can that be right? Damn it, how could I do something so stupid?"

Kiper added that he would be working around the clock to restore order to the Big Board "up until the eve of the draft, if necessary," and hopes that some clue to the Board's former state can be found in his recently published draft guide, the 120-page Mel Kiper Jr's 2007 NFL Draft Report

What pick did they make last year that was bad?

Who would you take this year if you were a Raiders fan?

I didn't really have any facts for that statement. Just thought it was a good time for a Raider comment. :flap:

I'd want Calvin Johnson then get Trent Edwards or Drew Stanton in the second round or even Brohm next year if you guys are in the running. Is Russel as much as a lock as ESPN is saying, or is it still completely up in the air?

one problem with that is they won't get a shot at any of the better OLmen which is a huge need for them.

Ya, but i'm horrible at predicting drafts so my opinion means very little. :sofunny:

Damn! We agree on something!

I'm not sold on Russell or Quinn at all.

Russell may very well end up in Oakland, but he isn't close to the lock that ESPN is making him out to be.

I was hoping Brohm would declare this year... he's the one I want.

Thats true, it is a huge need, but I just don't see the Raiders taking an O lineman early, after the Gallery debacle. But then again, we are seriuosly considering taking a QB with the #1 pick after the Marinovich fiasco... you never know.

I'm with boLTfan... I seriously suck at draft perdictions.

HOnestly...

I think the Raiders are going to have take a long view of life... get rid of some players... eat some cap for a little while... then go out and rebuild in draft and FA... on a schedule... with a focus to what they want in the future.

Al Davis has picked up too many "So CLoses" that it has finally came back to haunt them. They don't have team chemistry.. nor are they able to come together so that the whole is great then the sum of its parts. That is what made the Steelers of the last few years, the Colts.. the Ravens... etc. even better... they were better as a whole than individual talent would allow... oh yeah.. and the Pats.

And what is a "So Close?" Well... have you ever seen a woman that you have to look at for a couple of seconds... the first half a second she may seem really beautiful... then when you look at her, she actually is really ugly? If nature was just a little nicer and put the nose just a little smaller... or the eyes together just a little more...etc. but that didn't happen, and she is just ugly? (Sorry women.. I have no other way to explain it... :couch:)

Well that is a "So Close". as in.. Man, she was SO CLOSE to being beautiful... man did nature give her a bum steer in the end!!

The same is true for Oaklands last free agents.. Heck.. go all the way back to what was his name.. Brown from Dallas after the SB 35.. the guy had two balls THROWN TO HIM by our beloved (hack cough) QB. So what does Davs do? He goes out and pays him a big contract to come and do pretty much NOTHING.

By the way... I am a NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!! LOLOLOL

I happen to agree with you. There is no one in this draft that is going to make us instant winners.

The "so close " analogy is right on. This didn't happen over night, and it isn't going to get fixed over night.

I will be very happy with 6 wins this year. It will show we are headed in the right direction.

no there isn't any " one " player that will help. thats why the smart thing to do is trade down.

I agree. Thats what I would hope we do, but I doubt we will. I can't wait for this to be over with. I hope the Raiders NEVER have to go through this #1 pick crap ever again!

If he goes to the Raiders... absolutely... if not... well... nope.

Let me explain.

Go back and look at Mirer's stats. His rookie year was actually pretty dang good. It made people understand why Seattle chose him instead of some other quarterback that ended up in New England...

However, Seattle had no Offense line. NONE. Mirer lost all confidence in his line... as a result, he had to rush everything. His mechanics were destroyed and he never recovered.
So if he goes to Oakland... Yep.. Quinn will be EXACTLY another Mirer...

If not Oakland.. well, we will see.

AWWWW preach, there's plenty of great qb's that found themselves in the same situation. did the bungholes have a good line when they drafted palmer? how were the bronco's when they got elway? what were the cowboys in aikmans rookie year? 1-15? the list goes on an on...

He's a crazy idea... (getting back to the Kiper story)... Maybe they shouldn 't rely on a BULLETIN BOARD... with INDEX CARDS... to decide the future of their francise... Are the Bills serious... IS THIS SERIOUS!?

I'm halfway across the world right now... I don't know if this is... somebody fill me in...

I'm exhausted... where's my inhaler...

EDIT:

Nevermind... I actually finished reading the article... I feel dumb...

I have left what I put before as an act of contrition... Everyone should know how stupid I just was for 30-48 seconds...
