It's hard to blame Pittsburgh Steelers fans for feeling embarrassed. After a mascot-naming contest that generated more than 70,000 entries, the NFL team picked the unfortunate name "Steely McBeam" for its new character.

Steely -- who is supposed to be a steelworker, but looks more like a maniacal Muppet suffering from jaundice-- was unveiled a couple of days ago at the Steelers' training camp. Meanwhile, the club has rewarded Diane Roles, the creative fan who suggested the Mc-Beam moniker (possibly in jest), with a set of VIP tickets to the team's home opener.

Wow, this is just getting sad now

Even other teams feel bad for us because our mascot is so bad.

Why Why would that fan send in that name. IF she is a true fan she would rather have no mascot than have those tickets.

I am very sad today Steely Mcbeam is the worst name I have ever heard. I can not believe the Steelers have a mascot to begin with but a porn star mascot come on. This name has got to go I don't care if they keep the stupid mascot just change his freakin' name. I don't even care what you change it to anything would be better Joe Pittsburgh/Bob Pittsburgh/Mike Pittsburgh. At least you wouldn't expect him to come out on the field with a robe on with another dude ready to make a dude on dude porno. I'm pissed if you couldn't tell and every steeler fan should be right now!

They blasted it on PTI on ESPN the other night. Kornheiser called it one of the worst front office moves the Steelers ever made! Wow...I agree it's bad but that bad???

Ed Bouchette makes funof it daily as does Mark Madden. And, the Post Gazette poll is overwhelmingly negative. 90% either hate the name or think there shouldn't be a mascot. I bet this thing goes away quietly by the end of the season...

Yep, it's why I've had a standing boycott against them with the exception of a Steelers game being broadcast on that network since they were the main culprits behind the officiating controversy after SB XL. That being said, I have nothing against ESPN. I happen to enjoy Mike & Mike in the morning everyday on the way to work.

Pittsburgh fans do have an inferiority complex. I have sadly been a part of this at times, as well. So, if someone isn't praising the Steelers to high heaven we take offense. It's human nature, I guess.

My problem with ESPN doesn't really have anything to do with their coverage of the Steelers. The problem I have is that ESPN isn't about the athletes and teams any more it's about the Reporters that cover them. With shows that have people like Woody Page, Jay Merrioti, Skip Bayless, Michael Smith, Wilbon I could go on but it all about those guys and their crazy opinions. I watched yesterday and there was more conversation about A-Rod and wether or not he will break Bonds homerun record than anything else. He is like 250 some a way from it.

You better believe the mascot is the first and only thing on those players minds. Not making the team. Not making the playoffs. Not winning a Super Bowl. What's up with that mascot? I'm sure the players talk about it every day after camp. I can see it now....

Casey Hampton: Yo man, what in the hell are we going to do about that mascot? He's going to ruin this team.

Hines Ward: I know, I know. I mean, he is our starting QB, HB, WR, RG, LG, DT, RT, LT, DB, FS, SS, DE and LE. What are we going to do man?

Casey Hampton: Kill him. Kill him again and again!!!

I can picture Tomlin huddling them up and debating on if the mascot is good or bad for the team.

Mike Tomlin: Men!!! This is my first year here as HC. The Rooney's have ignorantly sprung a mascot on my table. What am I to do? I don't know. This mascot put's a serious dent in our plans for this season. I think we should just come clean to Steeler fans and tell them to expect a 0-16 season because of this damn thing. This is just going to distract our players and completely throw them off. ALL IS LOST!!!!

Oh BTW, Hey, did anybody tape Paulsen? Also, I have a petition to sign here....

Steeler Nation is ready to crucify this poor mascot as if he's the anti-christ, Kent Graham, Kordell Stewart, the Ravens, the Bengals, and the everything they hate all rolled into one. Get the torch and pitchforks! This mascot must die just because he doesn't look appealing to us and he has a silly name! The Death of this mascot is much more important than the Steelers playing and winning!

It's okay to not like it, but geez, it's just a mascot.

The worst mistake of all this is the fact that the contributor who came up with it had her name revealed and hometown. I expect death threats out of this.

The Steelers have had a mascot for the past 30 years and the name is Myron Cope. So, put a paper mache head on a character wearing a plaid sport coat. I submitted about 8 names for the Steelers Mascot in the contest that was being run to name that creepy thing, as I wanted to win the Steelers tickets. The one I liked the best that I submitted was Arthur J. Steeler - a tribute to the founding father of the Steelers. I'm sure there were better suggestions than mine - anything is better than the name they decided upon.

So far, Steely McBeam is getting McCreamed

LATROBE, Pa.— On Route 30 just a few minutes from the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp there’s a sign in front of the Auto Tag Store that reads:

We Don’t Need No Mascot

We Got Fans

They’re talking about the team’s new mascot, Steely McBeam. The Steelers chose the moniker from a pool of 70,000 entries. But even though it’s sure to inspire a name for a future Pittsburgh bar, not everybody is thrilled to have Steely around.

“They should have called him ‘The Terrible Mascot,’” said Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writer Ed Bouchette, playing off the Steelers’ famous Terrible Towels. “His popularity is lower than George Bush’s.”

Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca grimaced when I brought up the subject. “You know, nobody I’ve talked to has necessarily been a fan of the name,” he said. “It sounds like something from McDonald’s.”

When I asked Ben Roethlisberger what he thought of Steely, he said, “no comment.”
But come on, Ben — you gotta have a take on Steely!

“ I don’t want to say anything, because the Rooney family came up with it, and I support whatever they do,” he said. “But when they introduced him, we all kind of rolled our eyes. We’d rather have cheerleaders than Steely.”

Steely did have one supporter on the team: defensive end Brett Keisel.

“He’s just so different, but everything is different this year,” Keisel said, referring to the regime under new coach Mike Tomlin. “He’s going to bounce around, entertaining the kids, so it’s cool.”

Five Names For Steely That Didn’t Make It

1. Man of Steel (that actually wouldn’t have been so bad).

2. Cowhery McBill (The jutting jaw? The five o’clock shadow? Come on, Steely looks AWFULLY LIKE former Steelers coach Bill Cowher. “Separated at birth,” said wide receiver Hines Ward.)

3. Hypocycloid Harry (Of course, you’d have to always go around explaining that hypocycloids are those red, yellow and blue starry-looking things on the Steelers’ logo).

4. Rusty McBelt (Self explanatory).

5. Mickey Rooney (Righteous nod to Pittsburgh’s First Family of Football. Only one problem: don’t mascots always need to be ridiculously tall?).

Next: The long-awaited interview with STEELY HIMSELF!

http://sitelife.usatoday.com/ver1.0/Content/images/store/5/7/95c7e72e-e62d-4036-a756-1fca34f6ab5f.Large.jpg :dang:

An exclusive interview with Steely McBeam

LATROBE, Pa.—Because new Pittsburgh mascot Steely McBeam seems to be getting such a raw deal from everybody, I decided to talk to him myself, to get his side of the story.

ME: Mr. McBeam, given Pittsburgh’s illustrious history, with a tradition unlike any other, featuring a pantheon of heroes dating back three quarters of a century, do you feel any special pressure as the team’s new acting mascot?

STEELY McBEAM: (Beats his chest, juts out his jaw, does a quick two-step, spins around, and waves his finger indicating his is No. 1.)

ME: So, McBeam, you feel you are cast as a heroic figure, like the Greek gods of yore — like Perseus, perhaps?

STEELY: (Moonwalks three steps back, drops to a half split, pops up and takes three strutting steps forward.)

ME: Let me phrase it this way; If things are going poorly for the Steelers during a game, do yourself see a panacea for the Heinz Field doldrums?

STEELY: (He pulls up his work gloves and gives me a thumbs up.)

ME: Given that an entire stadium—nay , an entire city—may be looking to you for guidance, what will be your reaction when Pittsburgh scores its first official touchdown for new coach Mike Tomlin?

STEELY: (He waves a yellow Terrible Towel over his head, then drops to the ground and does seven pushups.)

ME: Some people say the Steelers don’t need a mascot, that they have the best fans in the world, and have won five Super Bowls without your help. What can you do to change the mind of this hardscrabble, blue-collar town?

STEELY: (Drops to his stomach and does “The Snake,” flips into a mock breakdance spin and ends up on his side, propping his head up with his left hand, his right hand on his hip.)

ME (exasperated): Mascots always seem to drive wacky vehicles. What kind will you drive?

STEELY: (Gives me a cold, steely stare).

Finally, I gave up. It was the worst interview of my life. Mascots! I couldn’t get a word out of the guy.

As for that vehicle, it can only be on thing.

A Beam-er.

Ya like someone else stated. He could be a good luck charm.

and they also said rename him "lucky Mcbeam" something.

Lets rename him that and give him a box of lucky charms instead of a beam. He can run around saying "there after my lucky charms"

[B]... ?But when they introduced him, we all kind of rolled our eyes. We?d rather have cheerleaders than Steely? ...

What? The players were in favor of cheerleaders than a mascot? :jawdrop:

As soon as I heard they've decided to name it McBeam I hated it (Note: IMO mascot itself didn't look that bad). I'd rather have cheerleaders than a McBeam, but then again I think the cheerleaders are huge distraction to the game and fans. So no cheerleaders, nor McBeam we needed.

From Ed Bouchette's online chat today

DumpTruck: I didn't see Steely McBeam at all during the game on TV. Was he there in the stadium, or are they (hopefully) just using him at promo events?

Ed Bouchette: He was on the field at halftime for a promotion and was booed when they announced him.

:sofunny: Hopefully the Rooney's realize their mistake

Steely McBeam came onto the field at halftime of the Eagles game and was booed by the crowd. awful harsh, wouldn't you say? I?m not as against the idea of a mascot as most of you are, aside from the awful name, and if you think about it Steely is good for entertaining children, many of which attend games. at least Steely isn't scary looking like the Patriot's evil minuteman is.

I must cower in a corner from sheer embarrassment, but at the Steelers Kickoff Luncheon on Wednesday, Steely McBeam was there and was headed my way when I left my table to go to the restroom. He opened up his arms and wanted a hug, so I complied.:blush::redface::redface: Shoulda given him a cack kick, but I just didn't have the heart. :sofunny:

His name will not change.. they already went threw a process to name him.. you will not get him kicked from the side lines.. Face the facts he is here for the year and thats it.

People should worry more about winning then crying and making stupid petitions.

Seeing as how we have NO control over whether they win or lose...

I guess stupid petitions on Steely McBeem at least have a slight possibility of making a difference.

Thus... if we are going to worry, we might as well spend a little more time worrying about things that we have a SLIGHT possibility of changing.

And now the real question...

Was it Steely that wanted the hug...

Or the 35 year old man in the costume that wanted the hug? :hunch:

RIGHT ON BROTHER!

I have heard some Steelers fans say that the fans are the only mascot and when I told this to some one else they told me, "If that is true then they gave him the wrong name, they should have named him, 'Drunken McBeergut.'"
