I'm actually speechless with horror.

But then I don't like Iceberg either. The Pirate Parrot is OK---kind of a classic---especially after the 80's cocaine fiasco.

A Mascot? What were they thinking?

Maybe he'll grow on us and catch on. Like the Terrible Towel did. I'm gonna give him a chance.

Welcome new Mascot!

I agree, we don't need a mascot... I've been proud that steelers team never has cheerleaders or a mascot... just Hard Core fans...the steelers nation to support the team.. In the other hand, I love the idea of the vintage uniforms.. block numbers just look more intimidating and old school.

I like it. It is not the first time the Steelers have had a mascot on the sidelines.
In the past the Steelers have had a few mascots.
I remember at in game in '96 seeing the mascot and I even got a picture. In the early '80s they had The Terrible Fan walking around games. As for people that the Steelers are just about football, we have the greastest gimick in all of sports in the Terrible Towel.

Steelers Mascot's of the past.

I don't exactly "get" the mascot. Unless you are under the age of eight what's the point?

Heinz Field is not like PNC Park or Mellon Arena. There are not many children who attend the games compared to adults. Hell, I would rather have seen them bring in cheerleaders over a mascot.

Eitherway, I'm not looking at a mascot or cheerleaders when I'm at a Steeler game. When there is stoppage in play I'm either.....

A) Looking at the jumbotron for scores/stats.

B) Going to the bathroom.

C) Making a beer and nacho run.

Much like with cheerleaders, do I think it's that big of a deal? No. Will Steelers football as we know it completely change? No. But instead of worrying about a mascot, this organization should start thinking about installing a field that can actually hold up past the month of November. Just a suggestion.

Steelers get a steal in draft of mascot

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/steelers/s_506092.html

The pick was described as a reach by many NFL experts, but the Steelers believe he will be a crucial component of the team's future success.

"Mascot clearly was a position of need for us, and we addressed that by taking the highest-rated one on our board," Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said at a post-draft news conference. "Frankly, we were surprised he still was available when it was our turn to pick."

Added new coach Mike Tomlin: "There are four main phases of a football game -- offense, defense, special teams and mascot. This bold move shows how serious we are about upgrading the mascot portion of our game."

The team selected as its new life-size talisman a hulking, overall-clad, hardhat-donning, boot-wearing steelworker.

Looking like a leftover from the team's glory days of the 1970s, the as-yet unnamed mascot had a solid, if unspectacular, career at Anachronism State.

"He does some things well," ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper said.

"He's quick with a jaw-jut, and knows how to use beard stubble and bushy eyebrows to his advantage.

"He also displays good concentration skills, particularly when staring intensely from across the street at the students playing in the elementary school playground."

Still, Kiper added, "He's going to be a project. He isn't cute and cuddly, like, say, the Carolina Panthers' Sir Purr. To be blunt, the Steelers guy looks like he should be on his way to a meeting with his parole officer."

Colbert shrugged off those concerns, saying he believed the mascot would help the Steelers -- a team with a disappointing 8-8 record last season -- get back on top.

"You look at our division, where Baltimore went 13-3 last year using a trio of costumed ravens -- Edgar, Allan and Poe -- as its mascots," he said. "You look at a team like New England, which consistently goes to the Super Bowl while amusing its fans with the clever, costumed antics of Pat Patriot. We'd like our new guy to help get us to that level."

In his initial remarks to the Pittsburgh's media, the mascot's goals were much more modest.

"All I can tell you," he said, "is that I'm going to give it all I've got when I strike (Cincinnati Bengals mascot) Who Dey in the face with my Styrofoam steel beam."

Steelers get a steal in draft of mascot

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/steelers/s_506092.html

lol, wow. Entertaining read.

Like I said, having a mascot is pointless and I'm not crazy about the idea, but it's really not that big of a deal in my book. Some in this city (read PPG sports bag, NSC, SB) are having heart attacks over this situation. It's a freakin' mascot. Some are acting as if he's the Anti-Christ and he's going to assassinate the Rooney's, blow up every Primaniti location in Pittsburgh and somehow deplete the city of Iron City beer. It's actually amusing to listen to and read.

Call me crazy, but I'm more concerned with this team bouncing back after a horrible season.

after 15 years or so, returning to a game as an adult, i still couldnt wait for the pirates. but then again we are talking about the pirates. if i was at a steelers game i would be pretty convinced i was going to get a better product in the actual game.

At least he is somewhat relevant to the city and the Steelers namesake. I doubt he'll add anything to the gameday experience and that he is actually supposed to.

The FO has now given themselves a "face of the franchise" who can make public appearances for the Steelers. They can offer "Steely Dan" for a cheaper price than a player would demand for such appearances. IMO, this is more of a business decision than a "we need are fans to cheer louder" decision. Of course, they wouldn't spin it that way.

On the throwback unis, I like the jersey and helmet but I'm not crazy about the white pants. The current uni with block letters would just me money.

I think the Steeler 75th Commemorative Mascot is ruggedly handsome, like so many of the men who used to work in the mills around 'The Burgh' all those years ago. As a tribute to them, I like it!:>) GO FOR SIX PITTSBURGH!!

Well I'm afriad the diagnosis isn't good judging by his yellow skin I'd say he's having serious liver problems (alas all too common a problem these days). He looks extremely jaundiced and while no doctor I wouldn't give him more than a season to live. Especially if its a bad year, all the tension and excitment plus lugging a steel beam around for three hours? Can't be good on the ole' heart, massive internal organ failure predicted...

I know this has probably been discussed to death already...

But what were the Rooney's thinking????

Wasn't it Dan who said the Steelers didn't need gimmicks like cheerleaders and mascots and that those were for college teams??

I don't know about anyone else, but the mascot is creepy looking and kind of lame. What's the point?

i JUST think it is so stupid how the steelers are making such a big deal about this stupid mascot. Come on this is not what the steelers are made of. Dont make a huge deal about announcing the name that is almost as stupid as having a mascot. come on rooneys do we really need this mascot? What good will the mascot bring? I have a feeling the name will be really really lame.

For me, I'm not expecting Steelers football as we know it to come to an end on September 9 simply because we brought in a mascot. As long as it doesn't effect what the players do on the field, then I really don't care. I don't see the big deal.

When I walk into Heinz Field on September 9 and if we get completely demolished by the Browns, then I will have something to worry about and something to make a big deal over. Until then, the mascot is the least of my worries when it comes to this team.

I just wish they would name it already and get on with the show. They have dragged this thing out for the last five months. Name it already and move on.

Amen to that 83. It's all about what The Steelers do on the field. You can have 10 mascots in the stands for what it's worth and it still wouldn't be a big deal. Just as long as we are winning. If the O line slumps again this year then maybe we can ask the mascot to play on the line.

The official name for the mascot is Steely McBeam. This is not a bad thing. Its just another way to boost and grow fans. I think its a good idea.

But it is kinda wierd how he looks like Bill C.

The team actually had a contest and that was good. Plus to kick it into gear right when your new coach is starting was good also. The only thing is hard core fans may think its kind of whimpy I personally don't.

Think of this, now people in other cities where steelers fans are in large numbers have to now deal with a mascot attached to everything, thats cool. I hope it explodes like the terrible towell.

The winning name was submitted by Diane Roles of Valencia, Pa. She will receive a VIP package for four to the Steelers' Sept. 16 home opener against the Bills. More than 70,000 entries were submitted for the name-the-mascot contest.

The mascot was unveiled earlier this year as a part of the Steelers 75th anniversary celebration.

Hey,I never said I wanted a mascot,we don't need no damn mascot.

I entered the contest to win the VIP package to Heinz Field for the home opener against the Bills.

And it isn't my fault, the contest winner was some female.

McBeam would be of Irish heratige, and there is a lot of that in Pittsburgh too.

But I agree,I won't buy anything with the mascots face on it.I actually don't think the mascot will make it through the season. It's gotta be embarassing when your own teams mascot gets booed louder than the opposing team.

Catching up with their competitors, the Steelers christen a mascot
Say hello to Steely McBeam
Thursday, August 09, 2007

By Robert Dvorchak, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The name and the character may take some getting used to. But move over Stevie Steeler and The Terrible Fan: The mascot named yesterday as part of the 75th anniversary season of the Steelers is ... Steely McBeam.

It almost felt like the football gods were frowning yesterday at the Steelers' training camp on this break from tradition -- What's next? A steel-toed drill team? -- but it turned out to be nothing more than a few raindrops and the rumble of distant afternoon thunder.

In fact, while some disparaging remarks have been heard from a fan base that resists change and doesn't think the Steelers need a mascot -- even though most National Football League teams have one -- Darnell Drewery of Wilkins has warmed to the idea.

"My first reaction was that if they didn't have one for so long, why do it now? But I've come around. I think it's really good for the new generation of fans," Mr. Drewery, 35, said at the announcement of the name following afternoon practice at Saint Vincent College. "I took pride in the fact that the Steelers didn't need anything but their hard-core fans. No cheerleaders or gimmicks. No Hollywood stuff. Pittsburgh is all about old-school. But now I think this is a good idea."

He would, however, have preferred the name Man of Steel.

For the record, Steely McBeam's reaction was steely silence. But that's because the mascot doesn't talk when wearing his costume of a plaid gold shirt, black bib overalls, a hard hat and a jutting jaw.

The winning entry was chosen from a pool of 70,000 suggestions submitted by fans around the world after the contest to name the mascot was announced in April.

The name was submitted by Diane Roles of Valencia, who receives a VIP package for four to the Steelers' Sept. 16 home opener against the Buffalo Bills. She will also get an authentic Steelers throwback helmet and jersey, just like those that will be worn by the team that day.

"We've been ecstatic all day. I am just so thrilled, I don't know what to say," said Mrs. Roles, a grandmother of five.

She said she picked the name because of Pittsburgh's steel history, the Irish name McBeam because of the Rooney family name and "beam" for the city of Pittsburgh.

The mascot, a steel worker who represents Pittsburgh's legacy as an industrial furnace, is a modern version of a logo that the Steelers used during the 1950s and '60s. Mr. McBeam will be visible at all home games and participate in the team's charitable programs and other club-sponsored events.

The continuity of generations is a hallmark of a franchise with such a rich history. When the team changed its name from Pirates to Steelers in 1940 by holding a contest, founder Art Rooney made the announcement. Yesterday, his grandson and namesake, team president Art Rooney II, served as master of ceremonies when the mascot's name was revealed.

"We've had mascots in the past. We just felt it was time to have an official one. We felt it would add some excitement and fun to our 75th season. It was a good way to try and reach out to the young folks a little more," said Mr. Rooney.

Mr. McBeam's jutting jaw conjures up memories of former coach Bill Cowher, he of the steely glare. But any resemblance is purely coincidental.

"It's been mentioned a couple of times that there's somewhat of a resemblance," laughed Mr. Rooney. "There was no effort to replicate Bill."

Debbie Townsend of Avonmore mentioned the resemblance, saying that the "highlight of my life" was getting an autograph from the former coach. She was at training camp yesterday with her husband and two children trying to get the autograph of new coach Mike Tomlin. And it's the new chapter in team history that makes the mascot appealing to her.

"I love it," she said. "I think this is the year to do it. It's a new beginning. A new book."

Longtime fan Pete Ringus, 66, of Arnold, didn't feel hidebound by tradition. While trying to keep track of two grandchildren who were with him at practice, he gave a thumbs-up to the idea.

"I think it's cool. Fans are interested in the Steelers anyway, but it gets them more and more involved, especially the new generation," said Mr. Ringus, a union carpenter for 38 years.

The honor of saying the name for the first time in public fell to Takara Corbett, who made the journey from Hawaii to St. Vincent College to see the Steelers up close. Her father, Kevin, is a native of Monongahela who bought a satellite dish and the $380 NFL TV package to keep up with the Steelers, even if he has to get up at 7 a.m. on Sundays to watch his team.

Miss Corbett, wearing a Willie Parker jersey, carried a hand-made sign that read:

Plane tickets: $5,000

Rental car: $500

Official jersey: $300

Getting an autograph from the Steelers: Priceless.

"I think the mascot is a very good idea," she said. "It's somebody that the kids can go up to when they're at the games. I like it."

Brown fans are laughing...? That's rich considering their mascot looks like a character out of a children's fairy tale book from the 50's (apologies to j-dawg...love ya man but it's true)

Now about "Steely"....

Come on y'all...this ain't the end of the world. Now I'll be the first to admit this was not the most stellar idea the FO has come up with. I will go as far to say it's up there on the "cheesy and corny" scale. But let's balance it out with the fact that this team is one of the best in the history of pro football (in pro sports in general) and this is just a small blot on an otherwise darn good record.

In other words....take a :chillpill The Steelers are still the Steelers no matter what silly ideas the marketing dept comes up with.

Kinda like I said earlier - and when was the last time the Browns beat us? Smacking our mascot because we've OWNED them for quite a while now - 12 wins out of the last 13 games against them, including the last 7 straight. They have absolutely nothing else to smack on us about.

The only thing that could be more lame than that mascot is if opposing fans become so desperate for smack against us this season that they smack on the mascot. If that's the case, however, it probably means we're kicking their asses on the field.

If the mascot goes around to local events and gets some kids interested in the Steelers and football and away from their video games for a few hours, what's the harm?

If you like the thing, good for you, I have 216 signatures in 12 hours saying that the mascot is gay and all the other polls on the post-gazette say that they don't like it either. I won't go to the games looking for the mascot, I will be there worrying about what goes on between the sidelines not on them, but I do not like the mascot one bit. Steely McBeam is gay and as a HARDCORE steeler fan, I don't want it to represent the NATION. we don't want it, we don't need it and I am going to try my hardest to do something about it. I already got the support of a radio station, all I need is the help of Steeler Nation to aid in my cause.

SO if anyone likes the mascot or tries to say, "I don't care about anything other than the game." Then quit posting threads with games in them, quit finding out who is from where, quit trying to decide what is true steeler fan, and just a be a fan and talk football on the site. Right now there isn't much football to talk about, its preseason, all we can do is whine about things like injuries, why someone didn't practice and take opinions on how we are going to do. If your a steeler fan your going to say the steelers are going to be good, we all plan on that happening. your telling me to grow up, but I am the one expressing my given right to speak my mind and protest, and I am being shut down by a select few. If you don't care stay out of this thread and go hang out in the locker room and trade recipes.

GO STEELERS!:helmet:

Make that 239. That name just plain sucks. Made a bad idea even worse.

I do not think it was Dan that said that we did not need any gimmicks. I mean after all the Terrible Towel is the greatest gimmick in all of sports and he had say in that.:tt02::tt02::tt02:

Much like when it comes to player personnel decisions, I don't think the Rooney's really give a damn what people think....thankfully..lol.

Rooney II cuts mascot
August 9, 2007
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

In a surprising decision today, Dan Rooney II has decided to cut Steely McBeam. After reading the Steelers Fever message board, Rooney noticed duplicated threads on the subject even though the moderators made it clear as day to post topics related to the mascot in the thread titled "Steelers Mascot!!!!!!!", Rooney decided that it was not a good idea to have the mascot represent the Steelers organization.

Rooney went on to say, "We just could not deal with the crying and moaning any longer. It was horrible. We thought the crying and moaning from Bengal fans was bad after we beat the Bengals in the playoffs a few years back, but this situation takes the cake".

One fan was quoted as saying "WAAAAAAAAAA WA WA WAAAAAAAAAAAA WA WAAAAAA" and soiled his pants after being asked what he thought of the Steelers mascot.

We will have further updates on this story as it progresses. :wink02:

Mascots come and they go.

Good point. I'm sure the same will happen with this one in the future.

Hey, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to call up Rooney right now and tell him to get rid of the mascot. That should work. You've seen how they handle contracts with aging vets with very little left in the tank, I'm sure they will listen to me. I'm special.

I signed the petition with this comment...

Please, we already have the Brown's as a mascot. We don't need another one!

I am the one expressing my given right to speak my mind and protest....:

Am I the only one that sees the hypocrisy in these two statements from the same post?

You do realize this forum is made up of hundreds of other members? It wasn't intended to be your personal soapbox, so please stop trying to use it that way. From here on out, also please refrain from telling others where to post. Thanks.

I'm telling you, if McBeam beats the hell out of that kitty in Cincinnati, opinions will change.

When you see McBeam dunking that flea bags head in the Allegheny River, all will be good. They just have to get that thing to tailgate pregame, get him all liquored up on Jim Beam and let him loose.
