Its early...

I've only been posting here for a few months so I don't really know, but do we have an official forum Fantasy league for "members only"

If not, I would love to take the reins in starting one up this year.

I figured it would be good to start kicking around ideas now so I would be ready once the Fantasy providers start opening their doors.

I usually go through Yahoo. I did a FOX Sports one last year and wasn't crazy about the format. My roommate does his through ESPN and from what I saw I really feel Yahoo is the most solid free provider out there. Very user-friendly.

So I wanted to see how much interest people have in this league. If the interest is high then we can do two leagues, end the season on week 15 and have the two champions duke it out in week 16 (week 17 is usually such a mess). We would have to do the math ourselves for that final game (unless someone knows a provider that accompidates "conferences"...

Anyway... I'm not going to go into much detail now, we can figure all that out once I know who would want to be involved. Like I said, its early, but if you would want to be part of this just leave a post on this thread or a PM...

If this already exists and I'm stepping on someone else's annual responsibilites let me know...

Just thought it would be fun to duke it out for SF bragging rights

Twelve is a great turnout so far.

So let's ask the next question. I know SteelCityMan said that he prefers Yahoo. I know I do too. Does anyone else have a preference. From what I've experienced Yahoo is EXTREMELY user friendly. I've been Commish of three leagues over there and I know all the ins and outs of that setup. Would anyone have any serious objections to Yahoo? If so let us know which you prefer and why it would be a better option.

From what I understand, there may be programs out there that set up "conferences." If the turnout grows to an awkwardly large number then that may be an option we have to explore. Though, it may be interesting though to have John Kuhn as your second RB :sofunny:

EDIT: P.S.: Can we get a sticky on this SteelCity? I plan on using it for league business and other "official" things once we get rolling.

Next piece of order is scoring.

Personally, I prefer to use fractional points. It seems so silly to have a running back gain 99 yards and be cheated of that last point because he didn't get an extra yard. Its much more practical, I feel to have that be worth say 9.9 instead of 8, as a fixed point league would have awarded him for the 80th yard and no more until he reaches 100. Some people like that though, because it throws extra twists to the game.

So I would like to hear some opinions on that matter.

Here is an example of the kind of league I was running last year. The average score is around 180 or so and above 200 is a solid game. These are fractional points.

Passing Yards (25 yards per point)
Passing Touchdowns (6)
Interceptions (-2)
Rushing Yards (10 yards per point)
Rushing Touchdowns (6)
Receptions (.5)
Reception Yards (10 yards per point)
Reception Touchdowns (6)
Return Yards (25 yards per point)
Return Touchdowns (6)
2-Point Conversions (2)
Fumbles Lost (-2)
Offensive Fumble Return TD (6)
Field Goals 0-19 Yards (3)
Field Goals 20-29 Yards (3)
Field Goals 30-39 Yards (3)
Field Goals 40-49 Yards (4)
Field Goals 50+ Yards (5)
Point After Attempt Made (1)
Sack (1)
Interception (2)
Fumble Recovery (2)
Touchdown (6)
Safety (2)
Block Kick (2)
Return Yards (20 yards per point)
Kickoff and Punt Return Touchdowns (6)
Points Allowed 0 points (10)
Points Allowed 1-6 points (7)
Points Allowed 7-13 points (4)
Points Allowed 14-20 points (1)
Points Allowed 21-27 points (0)
Points Allowed 28-34 points (-1)
Points Allowed 35+ points (-4)
Tackle Solo (1)
Tackle Assist (.5)
Sack (2)
Interception (4)
Fumble Force (3)
Fumble Recovery (3)
Touchdown (6)
Safety (4)
Pass Defended (2)
Block Kick (4)

This is just an example to work off of. This was with individual defenders, as well.
,
With point values we must also decide on roster spots.

I have found that this is a good set up:
1 QB
2 RB
3 WR
1 TE
1 W/R Option
1 K
1 Defense
Any number of bench spots

So that is up for debate.

So. We I need some feedback on points. Whether fractional is good or fix is preferred and point values.

Also positions. Do we want individual defenders.

SteelCityMan786
06-09-2007, 09:15 AM
I'm not a huge fan of fraction points. Sometimes I believe they can lead to cheap victories. Yet the make leagues interesting at the same time.

Go with fractional points - its the fairest way to get to the winner - the more resolution you have the more accurate the score.

I like all the positional set-ups - I presume their will be a roster limit for backup players.

I don't want an automatic draft - that takes alot of the fun out of it - if you're in then you should be able to make the draft.

I don't know how much freedom is given to points allocation for individual defenders - but the 2 leagues I was in last year they were hardly worth their roster spot as they were likely to incur minus points as an actual positive ( a great game might results in 5 points!).

That was in a league where 50-85 points was below par , 85-110 was ok, and 110+ was exceptional and probably a guaranteed win.

Ya its different but its still basically like the same. Its not like different players are going to be better since fractional points are turned on. The strategy is still basically the same. Fractional points basically eliminate ties and make the scoring more fair and exact.

The desire seems to outweigh the discontent. Here is the roster

We originally planned to have a Running Back/Receiver swing spot. Now, however, it appears that rosters will go deep with 14 people in the league.

1 QB
2 RB
3 WR
1 TE
1 K
1 Defense
1 Defensive Lineman/backer
1 Defensive Back
1 Defender (Which is either)
6 Bench spots (In theory you could carry an extra defender, QB, RB, WR, TE, and other player. I feel this is sufficient)

As noted before, we currently have 14 players. That is a pretty large league. Unfortunately, it is too few to do "conferences."

So if more people want to be involved. Say 2 more. We are looking at two 8 man conferences with 4 playoff spots a piece. The winner of each would play in an SF Bowl. So hopefully we get two more. I feel the conferences would give people opportunities for people to pick up more consistent talent. With the way things are going, its looking like guys like Kevan Barlow are gonna be possibilities.

OI! Two of you! Jump on board!

While we wait on that, though. Can i get a ballpark on "availability" to plan the draft date and time?

Hometown: That's an interesting concept. I've never played in a league like that. I like it.

So I need:
A second on positions.
Everyone's availability. (When are you usually home, any vacations, etc.) Chances are SOMEONE will not be able to make it, but Yahoo offers a great Pre-Ranking system. I've won a few titles with autodrafted teams. It IS possible.

Livinginthe past

We are going to procede with the two conference system.

Weeks 15 and 16 will see conference championships (I wish I could do 14, 15, but unfortunately cannot). Week 17 will be the SF Super Bowl, which we will track right here in the forum.

After work tonight I will be randomly generating the teams. 8 will go into the SFAFC and 8 will go into the SFNFC. Nigel will be commish of the latter.

If I don't hear anything before 11 tonight (when I will be home) I will procede. I will post the conferences here, Nigel and I will create the league, we will post the information and the rest can join. We will discuss an appropriate draft time later.

I look forward to duking it out for SteelerFever bragging rights!

As a rule, I don't draft Steelers. I don't want to have to play my offensive players against their D and I don't want to have to play my D(s) against my own guys! Team loyalty isn't the object of the game - winning is!

I knew you wouldn't let me down Nigel.

To Buzz and Mel and any others who filled in, thank you.

When I made the decision to move to two leagues, "conferences," we had enough interested to fill both leagues. Not to say that those who inevitably could not participate were in the wrong. Glad we are back on track though and ready for our inaugural season.

Now to the final order of business.
I have some of your "preferred" draft times already. It is looking like the AFC's will be much later in the day.

I would still love to hear feedback, however, so we can pick a time that works for as much people as possible. Please keep in mind that if you are not present in the draft the computer will chose a team for you based on the best available choice and your positional needs. While it is still VERY possible to win with a team that was chosen for you (I did my first year), it is much more of an advantage to be in attendance and see how things are progressing to see if you can reach, wait, or pull pull the trigger on your favorite choice.

A note. For those who are NOT going to be live drafting, Yahoo's system has NEVER been able to successfully draft defenders on its "autorun" setting. So if you are not going to be there you WILL get stuck with terrible defenders. I came up with 3rd string DLmen and other terrible choices. There is just something about the system that has never been fixed. While it is very easy to find capable defenders in FA after the draft, why deal with it.

You can preset your player rankings for the computer to consider if you do not plan on attending the live draft. If you fail to prerank your players, Yahoo will use their preranking instead. These are pretty accurate, but IMO aren't dead on, as things get a little jumbled after the LT Steven Jackson, and LJ.

I don't want to get into it here, but I think Jackson's rank is deserved. I'm getting off topic.

So, to recap.
AFC- keep up the feedback
NFC- What are your preferred drafting times. It will come later in the offseason once training camp is well rolling and things are looking more clear. I imagine most of you work, so right there is a scheduling conflict.

Thanks guys and thank you again, Nigel, glad to know the NFC is in capable hands

I for one live on the West Coast (California) Pacific Time, and my work schedule is 4:30pm to 1:00am, and that only depends on if there is no overtime needed could be 2:00am when I get off (Auto Plant) Monday through Friday, my only days off are Saturdays and Sundays. If the online draft can't be done on a weekend It's going to be a problem for me.

I'm looking to join a league. I only play in two leagues a year (since I believe any more than that waters down your attention to each league), and I've been in the same two VERY competitive leagues for years. This year I can't make the live draft in one of them, and I don't want to auto-draft, so I'm looking for a competitive league to play in.

I'm glad I got into this league. The fact that there aren't a bunch of homer picks proves that this league knows how to pick value. It should be fun and competitive, and I look forward to beating each and every one of you week after week after week.

Nice work guys!

I was worried sick that I might not catch Nate Washington....catch....nate...okaaaay.

Hope everybody enjoyed the draft - Ryan (Crush) did a fantastic job of not only running the event but also picking me a very competitive team with the last place in the draft.

I look forward to winning each and every week (with the obvious exception of my match-up with Rev - who basically beat me to the boast!)

Oh good lord. I just realized that 2 of my WR's are Pats. So I have to cheer for a bunch of Patriots losses by scores of 51-49.

That is a definite candidate for 'least realistic moment of enlightenment' I have come across on the internet.

How did they get there? :hunch:

Indeed.

Its not an auto draft so you don't really have any type of escape route - I'll be happy to work out some type of trade should you find their presence on your roster too distasteful :wink02:

Week one is complete in the SFAFC.

With the last game winding down, the games are already basically decided.

Steelkings vs. Verks36

Despite excellent performances from Verks' receiving core, Steve Smith, Chad Johnson, and Randy Moss, disappointing outings by Stephan Jackson and Brandon Jacobs proved to be too much. Tom Brady and San Diego's Defense carried Steelkings to a 17 point win.

Stlrtruck vs. Stainless Steel

The Holmes/Roethlisberger duo started the week off right for Stlrtruck as Shaun Alexander, Marion Barber, and Baltimore's defense chipped in to put together a solid outing. For Stainless Steel, Donovan McNabb, Marvin Harrison, Roy Williams, and Edge all had good performances, but in the end couldn't add it up to get over the hump.

Newzfoxjr vs. PalmerSteel

Tony Romo had an outstanding game for Newzfoxjr, chipping in for nearly a third of total points. Despite poor performances by Reggie Bush and Drew Brees, PalmerSteel was able to rebound on the shoulders of Antonio Gates, Lav. Coles, and Adrian Peterson. Individual defenders proved to be lopsided as PalmerSteels crew outscored Newzfoxjr's 33.5 to 5.52.

Steelcityman786 vs. Section514

Peyton Manning proved his worth once more with a strong outing on Thursday night. Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Travis Henry, and Marshaun Lynch followed suit leading Section514 to victory. Reggie Wayne and Joseph Addai showed early hopes of a high scoring fantasy matchup, but in the end SCM fell short.

Crushzilla vs. HometownGal

The absence of Deion Branch hurt HTG as Torry Holt, LaDainian Tomlinson, Pittsburgh's Defense and individual defenders had solid outings. A pair of Cowboys, though, Jason Witten and Terrell Owens, joined Brian Westbrook and a huge game by Plaxico Burress for the Crushzilla win.

Standings going into week two: (Same records broken with total points)
1. Crushzilla
2. PalmerSteel
3. Stlrtruck
4. Section 514
5. SteelKings

Ok lets wrap up the SFNFC Week1 results.

LITP beat NCSteeler

Big scores from Plaxico, Kitna and Wayne get the bandwagon rolling, scoring heavily enough to overcome a par week from FF superstar LT.

Buzz05 beat Hines86Ward

Low scoring game, Laverneus Coles and Baltimore team D coming up trumps for Buzz05.

The Duke beat KATK9

Tom Brady and Patriots D help The Duke top an underperforming KATK9 team, who's lowlights include a zero point outing for Hawks WR Deion Branch.

The Rev beat GBMelBlount

Crushing victory for The Rev, courtesy of Randy Moss and the San Diego D (something has to give this week)

Pittsburghp8baller beat CantStop85

Big outings for Adrian Peterson, Andre Johnson and Steve Smith brsuh aside the challenge from CS85 despite nice weeks from Chad Johnson and Clinton Portis.

All I need to beat NCSteeler is for his London Fletcher to do nothing and my Donovan McNabb to throw for 400 yards and 4 TD's. No problem!

Congrats on the win in advance, NC.

So how about trading me Moss then?

His yards per game performance plummetted this week - i'll take him just because im a hopeless homer.

Ok, here are the week 2 results and standings.

The Duke beat LITP

Big performances from Tom Brady, Willie Parker and the New England defense meant that this match-up was over as a contest early.

CantStop85 beat Hines86Ward

A huge day for Chad Johnson and a very poor day for Lee Evans was the difference make in this one-sided contest.

NCSteeler beat The Rev

Despite another big day for Moss, The Rev was let down by Donte Stallworth and McNabb. NC got some nice contributions from Marion Barber, Tony Romo and Tampa Bay D-lineman Barrett Ruud.

GBMelBlount beat Buzz05

A huge day for Carson Palmer and the Chicago D blows Buzz05 out of the water who had a par performance from his team.

KATK9 beat Pittsburghp8baller

P8baller had a big day, but unfortunately for him KATK9 had a bigger one.
KATK9 struck FF gold with Jake Delhomme, Braylon Edwards, Joey Galloway and Edgerrin James

KATK9 sets the new weekly record and also the overall record for points scored in a week to date - congrats.

The Duke is the class of the league so far and is the only player still unbeaten through 2 weeks.

Yes they do.

Week 15 is Divisional round.

Week 16 is Conference round

Week 17 is the Superbowl.

Week 17 will be worked out using 'brain maths' rather than yahoo's scoring system - sounds tough right?

Thats why we were all relieved when Crushzilla stepped forward and volunteered to do it.

OK, well I officially deem any and all fantasy advice I ever offer again to be completely null and void. I benched McNabb (381 yards and 4 TD's) for Shaub (236 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT's). That's bad enough there, but then I gave advice for someone to dump Kevin Curtis (11 catches for 221 and 3 TD's) and keep Hines Ward in the lineup (1 catch for 2 yards).

I liked the McNabb match up against Detriot, but obviously not to that degree.

Schaub was always going to struggle without his only decent wideout - the Texans kept it closer than I expected.

On the bad prediction side, I went with Kaeding but at least the guy I dropped for him was worse - Jeff Wilkins - I was sure the Rams would be an offensive machine this year.

FF is Russian roulette - unless im winning..... and then its something that only the very gifted can succeed at :wink02:

Ok Week 3 update.

LITP beat Pittsburghp8baller

A mammoth week for Westbrook backed up by very good weeks for Kitna and Burress were enough for LITP to win comfortably.

GBMelBlount beat CantStop85

Ronnie Brown was the big story for GBMB with solid contributions from Ellis Hobbs and TJ Housh.

CS85 will be wary of starting Marc Bulger in future after he racked up minus points in week 3.

NCSteeler beat The Duke

Anquan Boldin comes up huge for NC along with good support from Romo and Marion Barber.

A big week from Tom Brady can't save the Duke from losing his unbeaten record.

Buzz05 beat The Rev

Congrats to Buzz for this weeks top score - Kevin Curtis, Reggie Bush and Derrick Mason bring home the big points.

Rev suffers from the decision to bench McNabb in favor of Schaub but his whole team had a poor week (apart from the ever consistent Randy Moss).

KATK9 beat Hines86ward

A solid outing from KATK9 is enough to dispose of Hines86Ward who owns the second QB this week to actually lower his teams points total.

Didn't get around to it last week, but here are the week 3 results.

HometownGal v. SteelCityMan786

Pittsburgh's Defense along with solid work from receivers Driver, Welker, Branch, and Dallas Clark helped build a winning performance for HTG. SCM had nice stats from running backs Ronnie Brown and Joseph Addai, but in the end couldn't add it up.

Stlrtruck v. Section 514

In a low scoring duel, Section514 had nice efforts on special teams and defense as New England's squad along with Neil Rackers had 15 points each, along with nice points from Marshaun Lynch and Chris Cooley. In the end, though, Marion Barber and T.J. Houshmandzadeh helped Truck secure a victory.

verks36 v. PalmerSteel

Coaching neglect from verks began to add up as Brandon Jacobs tried to play injured and only 2 defenders were fielded, as PalmerSteel improved to 3-0 with WRs Mason, Edwards, and Coles all finding the endzone. Drew Brees actually hurt the team as his 5 turnovers totaled a -.10 performance. Ultimately, though Palmer easily reeled in the W.

Stainless Steel v. Steelkings

In a game that went down to the wire, on Sunday Night, Shaun Suisham wasn't able to bridge the gap for Stainless as Steelkings edged out a 160.19-153.74 victory. Standing out for the Kings were stellar outings by Tom Brady and Anquin Boldin, which were able to best the efforts by Donovan McNabb and Roy Williams.

Newfoxjr. v. Crushzilla

Crushzilla rode the coattails of Brian Wesbrook, scoring almost a quarter of total points in a blowout. Dallas' defense and Tony Romo cashed in a third of Newzfox's total points, but in the end steady games for Crush from Burress, Owens, and Hasselbeck proved to be too much.

Would someone like to explain brain math to me?

Haha, sure. Thankfully Yahoo adds up all the points for us.

We, however, can do it ourselves.

Por ejemplo:

Tommy Twotone, RB
29 rushes 112 yards, 3 receptions 15 yards, 1 TD.

127all purpose yards=12.7 points. (At 10 yards equals one point)
3 receptions= 1.5 points (At .5 points a reception)
1 TD= 6.0 points (At 6 points per TD)

Total points= 20.2 points

This is how I used to figure out scores on Sunday night, because I couldn't stand to wait until Monday. I finally just bought Stattracker...

I picked up Colvin with the same intention - if the Patriots can get the Bengals to abandon the running game it could be a good week to have a Patriots OLB on the roster(of course, AD is playing inside mostly this year)

Well, he's going to need a great game. You've got 30 points to overcome, and you have to figure Moss is going to be the recipient of many of Brady's passes (It's the Bengals. I expect Moss to be pretty much running free throughout that sieve of a secondary all night), which will mitigate many of Brady's points.

Results for Week 4 SFAFC

Crushzilla v. Stlrtruck

A trash rhyming (?) battle turned into a beat down as ridiculous work from receivers Houshmandzadeh, Holmes and Bowe fell the undefeated 'Zilla squad. Pitiful outings by Thomas Jones and Brian Westbrook (0.0) left Crush well short even before Monday morning.

HometownGal v. Newzfoxjr

Despite another.... stellar... outing from Marc Bulger, HometownGal was able to pull the troops together with solid performances by L.T., Sammy Morris, and Dallas Clark. Tony Romo continued playing well for Newzfoxjr, but couldn't keep up in the end.

SteelcityMan786 v. SteelKings

SCM's one running back strategy didn't pan out for him and SteelKings easily ran away with this one. Other highlights for SCM was the play of Rex Grossman who was awarded no points for watching and Justin Miller continues to be on the IR. Ronnie Brown and Tom Brady followed up big outings last week to secure the SK's W.

Stainless Steel v. PalmerSteel

Palmer Steel remained the only unbeaten team with solid outings from Laveranues Coles, Adrian Peterson, Jon Kitna, and others. Stainless Steel had a rough week as Donovan McNabb, Marvin Harrison, Joey Galloway, and Willie Parker had hard weeks.

verks36 v. Section514

Peyton Manning, Marshawn Lynch, and Travis Henry solidified a victory for Section514. Verks had trouble keeping pace with gooseeggs by Steven Jackson, Vince Young, Brandon Jacobs, Vernon Davis, Dan Klecko, and a mystery defender.

Week 5 is fresh in the books

Steelkings v. PalmerSteel

Because sports shows lead with their best games, so will I. This was a close one that was actually decided last night with no players in tonight's game. PalmerSteel stood atop the league with a tight lip, but was undone this week after some jabbering as Tom Brady and Ronnie Brown continued to put in solid weeks for SteelKings. Add in a Heat Miller TD and San Diego wipeout and it proved to be just enough to beat out Antonio Gates and very nice outings by PalmerSteel's individual boys. Final score: 139.10-136.18.

Newzfoxjr v. Steelcityman786

Another close one. SCM finally gave up on Rex Grossman as Philip Rivers proved what a real QB can do. He also had outings from Owen Daniels, Nate Kaeding, Cedric Benson, and Reggie Wayne. Newzfox had the right idea starting Randle El in an WR core with no other options, but Tony Romo couldn't pull it together against the Bills. Final score: 103.28-105.62

Stlrtruck v. HometownGal

Another one that game down to tonight's contest. Stlrtruck was looking for momentum, but Marion Barber didn't get his normal touches because of Dallas playing catchup. In the end good performances by Greg Jennings and Tony Gonzalez couldn't close the gap enough. Hometown finally had a good game from Torry Holt, and Patrick Crayton scored another touchdown as she was able to hold on in the end. Joey Harrington barely scored in the positives for Hometown, but it was certainly better than what Bulger's been able to muster up thus far.

Section514 v. Stainless Steel

Section was able to keep his spot near the top of the rankings as he handled the mustached wonder in a 118.92-107.13 match. For Section, Peyton Manning continued to be consistent and Larry Fitzgerald had another good performance as the Cards go-to-guy. Chipping in was Chris Cooley's TD and another strong day for New England's defense. Stainless Steel suffered again from the Parker touchdown drought as solid games by Kellen Winslow and Edge just weren't enough to keep him from going 1-4.

Crushzilla v. verks36

Crushzilla had a hard course as Rudi Johnson, Brian Westbrook, and Lamont Jordan were on byes and Hines Ward's injury kept him out again. Fortunately, for the new league leader, his opponent played a number of no-shows including Chad Johnson, Steven Jackson, Vernon Davis, and Reggie Brown. Crush's rag-tag fantasy boys were enough to earn the W as Plaxico Burress, Vincent Jackson, and Jason Witten were more than enough to win the week convincingly.

Its not quite Sunday morning yet. I only have Stattracker's updating standings so no cool graphic this week, but here are the early rankings. (Records tied broken with points).

1. Crushzilla 4-1
2. PalmerSteel 4-1
3. HometownGal 4-1
4. Section514 4-1
5. SteelKings 4-1
6. Stlrtuck 3-2
7. Stainless Steel 1-4
8. Steelcityman786 1-4
9. Newzfoxjr 0-5

From what I understand it is NCSteeler v. Palmer Steel.

You can make transaction moves as you normally would. You can pick up anyone who is a FA in YOUR league.

PM me with any transactions.

Submit you final rosters via PM to me 15 mins before a designated player is about to begin. You can make roster moves according to game time decisions, weather, etc. But I will NOT except them unless PMed to me 15 mins before gametime begins.

When I have received both rosters I will post them here. I will do the math using the scoring system we agreed upon at the beginning of the season. I will use stattracker to calculate the results. I will also add them by hand and Rev will check my math.

Did I miss anything? Is this all kosher with you two?

I just had my draft for another league and I'm pretty happy with my lineup:

Rivers, Philip QB SD
Parker, Willie RB PIT
Tomlinson, LaDainian RB SD
Chambers, Chris WR SD
Moss, Santana WR WAS
Owens, Terrell WR DAL
Witten, Jason TE DAL
Gostkowski, Stephen K NE
Bears, DST

Jackson, Tarvaris QB MIN
Taylor, Fred RB JAC
Brown, Reggie WR PHI
Utecht, Ben TE CIN
Jets, DST

Like I said, I'm fairly pleased with my lineup, but I'd like other opinions......

Only thing I'm worried about is the QB/RB/WR WR/TE on the same teams. I try to avoid that for a.) bye weeks and b.) tought defensive opponents giving not one, but two of your guys trouble in the same week.

I still do it if a guy I really want is there. Unfortunately, it was Housh and C.J. last year. I scored a lot of points with those two.

Just be open to trades if it becomes a problem.

I hadn't thought about that (I guess that proves what a newbie I am). Thanks for the advice. I'm in a couple other leagues, so I'll try to be more careful!
