View Full Version : Andrew Perloff/SI - Preseason Quarterback Rankings

05-18-2007, 12:06 PM
Andrew Perloff, who writes for SI.com, ranked all 32 projected starting quarterbacks per the list below. His preface:

"Like all great sports arguments, this debate began at a bar, with a number of SI.com colleagues earlier this week. The challenge: rank the 32 projected starting quarterbacks. The criteria: how will they perform in 2007, factoring intangibles such as winning and leadership along with statistics. Marc Bulger may have better numbers than Tom Brady, but that doesn't make Bulger more valuable.

After No. 5, this gets very difficult, but if you disagree with any of my rankings, I'll gladly set you straight in a FanNation Throwdown at any time."

Based on their criteria as stated above, I personally think Ben should be above Brees and Rivers, and I will NEVER understand the Carson Palmer lovefest, and Vick at #10, based in part on "winning and leadership" -- puh-leeeeeeze, they must be kidding -- but whatever....it's the collective opinion of some guys in a bar, right?

Here's a link to the post: http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/14552

Not too bad----Philip Rivers is way too high, as are Romo, Lienart and Cutler. McNair should probably be a bit higher. How can Matt Schaub be ahead of anyone?---talk about unproven. Poor Frye.
My top 5 would be:

1. Peyton Manning
2. Tom Brady
3. Drew Brees
4. Carson Palmer
5. Ben Roethlisberger

I can understand the Carson Palmer lovefest for one reason - he does have the prettiest deep ball in the NFL (yes, even better than Manning's). However, that's ALL he has - he fumbles at the slightest bit of contact, and his accuracy goes way down if he has to throw on the run (which is one of Ben's towering strengths). Rivers above Ben? Based on what - one season? I don't think so. Besides, I consider SI to be pretty much a joke anyway. Exhibit A: Vick STILL being listed in the top 10. He's nothing more than a RB who occasionally throws it and is inaccurate as hell.

I agree fanssince76.. good points espcially the Vick point. He is So Overrated it is rediculous. That list of QB's would be numbered in different ways in different circumstances. are they talking about all around players or are they talking about running QB's or scrambling QB's or what? Must be over all... I dont know if I see Big Ben in that no.7 slot over all. His inconsistency kills me. One play he looks like MVP material and the next he looks like Ryan Leaf. I love Ben, but he must get his consistency down. Of course, he is the QB for the Steelers, all he has to do is NOT lose the game right?.. NO... he won that playoff game in Indianapolis 2 years ago with his passing and he won the AFC Tittle with his passing... right? Our running games were nonexistent in those 2 games and the Bus almost cost us the Colts game. In the Super Bowl, our defense won us that game not our passing or running......The top QB in this league to date in my opinion is still Tom Brady... and I think that Drew Brees means just as much or more to his team than Brady.. Amen?

Vick isn't a top 10 QB,hell he isn't a top 20 QB.

Rivers has plade one season...the season LT won MVP and scored 31 TD's...they rode thier defense and LT to the best record in football, not Phillip Rivers arm.

How the hell is Tavaris Jackson above Charlie Frye?Tavaris Jackson shouldn't be above anyone.Frye isn't the worst QB in the league,he jsut has one of the worst o-lines.

Not anymore.

See Russell, JaMarcus.

McNabb is TOO HIGH! He hasn't played through the last 2 seasons, his health is going down. He is NO WHERE Near worthy of a top 10. He's about in the 40's.

I saw that list before and thought JAY CUTLER OVER BRETT FAVRE AND STEVE MCNAIR??!!

The only good thing about that list is Ben is at 7.

SI owes me a new monitor after causing me to spit my iced tea all over it after reading their "list."

What a joke this once great sports magazine has become.

SI is garbage. But what do you expect from a magazine/website who's biggest name has become Peter King? The past month I've changed my mind about the ESPN vs SI debate and I'm gone squarely into the ESPN camp. Better website, better magazine, and better cable/network sports coverage.
