While teammates Big Ben Roethlisberger and Fast Willie Parker carried simple nicknames to near perfection yesterday, there's no arguing the points on kicker Jeff Reed.

He's the real Mr. Perfect.

Reed made both of his field-goal tries yesterday, from 44 and 27 yards, to give him 19 consecutive successful attempts dating to last season. That ties him for the team record held by the NFL's all-time scoring leader, Gary Anderson.

"It feels great, considering people are putting me in the same boat as Gary Anderson,'' said Reed. "However, I have a long way to go to be Gary Anderson.''

About 18 of them. Anderson played in his 22nd NFL season last year, coming out of a brief retirement to play for the Tennessee Titans. Reed has embarked on his fifth NFL season. This is also his first year with a long snapper other than Mike Schneck, although not a completely new one because rookie Greg Warren snapped for Reed in 2001 at North Carolina.

"He's good, a good athlete and strong, big-bodied,'' Reed said. "He does well. He knows he has a long way to go, I have a long way to go. He had a good preseason and a good first game."

Reed said he was not worried because he hooked two field-goal tries, from 28 and 43 yards, in the preseason.

"It happens,'' he said. "Nobody's perfect.''

I saw them mention that during the game. Would be nice to see him break it next week.

I hope people don't start to take Reed for granted. He's been a very good kicker over the past few years. If he becomes more consistent on his kickoffs, he'll be one of the league's best.

I think if I recall correctly that he just got a new contract this last off season, so he'll be around for the forseeable future.

Both Reed and Gardocki are hugely important and efficient to boot (pun intended  ) its one less problem for the management to have to concentrate on

GO JEFF GO!! Set up your own record
