Penguins change two game times
Tuesday, July 24, 2007

By Shelly Anderson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Penguins today announced time changes for the start of two home games.

Their game Oct. 27 against Montreal has been moved from 7:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Their game Feb. 23 against Ottawa will start at 3 p.m., not 2 p.m.

The changes came at the request of the NHL, most likely to accommodate television considerations.

Printed material such as tickets and pocket schedules will reflect the corrected faceoff times.

FSN Pittsburgh To Carry At Least 70 Penguins Games
Pittsburgh Penguins Aug 17, 2007, 9:50 AM EDT

FSN, the exclusive rights holder to Pittsburgh Penguins regional hockey game telecasts, announced it will produce a minimum of 70 contests in the 2007-08 regular season.

Coverage on FSN begins with the season opener at Carolina on Fri., Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. The Pens host the Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks on Sat., Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m.

“We are about to begin one of the most exciting seasons of hockey on FSN,” said Steve Tello, FSN Pittsburgh Senior Vice President & General Manager. “FSN plans to bring its viewers at least 70 games this season with 36 of them available in High Definition.”

All 82 of the Penguins NHL games will be televised with at least 70 games regionally on FSN Pittsburgh. Versus plans to carry eight games nationally. In addition, the Penguins can be selected for up to four regular season games on NBC. The NHL will offer flexible scheduling for NBC with games selected for broadcast on NBC thirteen days prior to the scheduled game.

Paul Steigerwald and Bob Errey return as the Voices of Penguins Hockey on FSN.

Outside of game coverage, FSN also will provide the team and its fans with related programming highlighted by live on-site pregame Savran on SportsBeat shows and extensive post-game coverage on FSN Live: Penguins Edition.

The high definition schedule will be announced at a later date.

Yeah. From my understanding, they (Penguins and FSN) had to wait and see which games VERSUS was going to pick up this season before they came to an agreement on the 70.

I guess also they had to set grounds with NBC if the Pens make the playoffs.

I wish I got VS/FSN.... I love the Penguins but when they are not on NBC I have to go to the games or a friends if I wanna see them play...

I am in love with my dish and am way more pleased with it than I was with cable but if there is only one bad thing about it it's the fact that I don't get versus/foxsports, therefore cannot watch the Pens too often... :(

Penguins may open 2008-09 season in Europe
Sunday, September 30, 2007
By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Penguins have opened seasons on the road before, and they'll do it again when they visit Carolina Friday.

But they don't often do it like this.

They have been approached by National Hockey League officials about beginning the 2008-09 season in Prague, Czech Republic, likely with a couple of games against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

While Penguins and league officials have steadfastly declined to discuss anything about a possible trip to Europe next fall, Lightning President Ron Campbell confirmed to the St. Petersburg Times that his team has approached about doing so and said it is "flattered" by the league's offer.

A person familiar with the situation said nothing about a Penguins-Lightning matchup figures to be finalized for some time, but added that it is virtually certain those two teams will be involved.

The Penguins are a logical choice for such a venture because of their collection of high-profile talent, headlined by Sidney Crosby. Tampa Bay also has several big-name players, including Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis and Brad Richards.

The Penguins kicked off the 2000-01 season with a pair of games against Nashville in Japan, going 1-1.

Pens seek change to start of Saturday home game
By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Penguins plan to ask the National Hockey League if they can change the time of their home game Saturday.

They are scheduled to play Florida at Mellon Arena at 7:38 p.m., about a half-hour before the Steelers face Jacksonville in an NFL playoff game at Heinz Field.

NHL teams do not have the authority to arbitrarily change game times. The league requires that teams seek its approval because it wants factors such as how a switch would affect the visiting team to be taken into consideration.

It is believed, however, that most such requests ultimately are approved.

The Penguins' flight to Buffalo this morning was delayed about an hour-and-a-half, but they are expected to arrived in time for a 3 p.m. practice at Ralph Wilson Stadium, where they will face Buffalo in an outdoor game tomorrow at 1:20 p.m.

By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Penguins' game against Florida Saturday at Mellon Arena will begin at 3:08 p.m.

It had been scheduled for 7:38, but was moved up to avoid a conflict with the Steelers' playoff game against Jacksonsville, which will begin at 8 p.m. at Heinz Field.

The Penguins had to get league approval before changing the starting time.

Penguins schedule exhibition game in Finland
Wednesday, March 12, 2008
By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Penguins will play an exhibition game in Finland this fall.

They will face Jokerit, one of Finland's best-known clubs, at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki Oct. 2 before playing a two-game series against Ottawa in Stockholm, Sweden, Oct. 4-5 to open the 2008-09 season.

"The entire Pittsburgh Penguins organization is excited about the prospect of playing against Jokerit in Helsinki," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said in a prepared statement. "We are looking forward to bringing NHL hockey to Sweden and Finland, which are great hockey countries, and we hope that fans from all over Europe enjoy the international competition."

Thats awesome the NHL loves us so much we are americas team!!

Unfortunately, the NHL is marketing the sport in Europe while they should be trying to market it better in the states, where the majority of NHL teams are actually located. There's a reason why ESPN dropped the sport and it's on a relatively unknown station (Versus) and the tv ratings were behind the World Poker Championship at one point.

IMO, work on building the NHL's reputation in the states first, then worry about Europe. It's a dumb idea and one that I'm sure the players are not crazy about. There have already been complaints and I can't say that I blame them for complaining.
