View Full Version : Some thoughts from an outsider

I ended up taping the game as it started 4 hours before I was due to go to work (1AM) and bed seemed like the only option.

Ok, some thoughts.

1. Ben looked relaxed and confident with the offense

2. Cedric Wilson stepped up with some very nice catches.

3. Nate Washington stunk the place up - dropped at least two easy catches.

4. The Saints played flat all night, with a lack of intensity.

5. The Steelers looked pumped and ready to go - everyone from the 1st to the third team looked motivated - kudos to Tomlin.

6. Tomlin looks the part - calm, assured and always in control.

7. The Saints possibly had one of the worst secondaries in the NFL last year, and going by this showing not much has changed - the amount of open space Wilson and Holmes gained from simple stop/go patterns was an embarrassment.

8. The Saints stacked the line to stop the Pittsburgh running game and left their woeful DB's in single coverage.

9. Sepulveda showed nice control with his punts, but I feel weirdly diappointed he didn't take someones head off fielding his own kick - maybe he needs to line drive a few more so he gets a shot at the returner :wink02:

10. There was still much time spent focusing on the booth chit chat while the game played out in a small window - that sucks.

11. Did I mention that the Saints secondary sucks, too?

12. And finally, HOF inductee Charlie Sanders not only looks like Morgan Freeman but he sounds exactly like Morgan Freeman. Charlie Sanders is Morgan Freeman.

Completly agree even with the Morgan Freeman stuff.

I try not to take to much out of a pre-season game....But I did like the Steelers energy last night.....The whole team was pumped and ready to play....Were the Saints did look like zombies out there...lol

I guess Ben looked confident.....Don't get me wrong it was nice seeing him out there and looking sharp....But he still only threw 3 passes......Which he completed two and was on target on all three....Damn Washington dropped his one incomplete pass...

Was that Cedric Wilson or Jerry Rice last night?lol Nice start for Wilson...Hope he continues to show up all year....As for Nate Washington....yep he did stink it up bad......No excuse for his two drops especially in a pre-season game.....

Just wait until Dec....Then you see Sepulveda lay the smack down....Wes Welker be afraid be very afraid......

Yes Charlie Sanders sort of looks like Morgan Freeman....lol

I did a running analysis of the 1st and second quarters, the second half and a final run of grades last night, which were long and I would rather not re-hash right now. We can't post self-glorifying links, so you can either a) figure out where to find a link to my site (it's not that hard!), or b) ask and I will post them in here. I love this site so I won't take the risk of breaking a rule by linking to my own site.

I, for one, welcome Morgan Freeman to Canton.

So it's definitely no homerism from us steel fans, even outsiders know we did great, thanks LITP

LITP...

I have to agree with your assessment...

It is hard to draw any REAL facts from the game... but there are generalities that we can see..

1. Steelers seem to have bought into the hard-nosed, hard hitting type football once again.

2. Cedric Wilson and Simmons sure LOOK like they understand their job is on the line this year.

3. Sep. hit some good punts....

Other then that... I have to wait to see them play more against the first strings of other teams.

Yesterday, I was ready to give us the Superbowl... Today... I say it is a great start.. we look good... but we played one series!

Ben showed me last night that he is more comfortable and he actually set his feet before he threw which impressed me. Cedric was also very impressive and showed me that he can play with this team and step up to be the 3rd string reciever, but then Nate yes had a very bad night, but i think and hope he can improve and be a good WR for the Steelers.

Man... everyone is rough on Nate... poor guy... :sofunny:

The funny part is that he dropped two easy catches -- and then made an acrobatic jumping catch over the middle a little later in the game. Seems like you gotta catch him off-guard to make him catch the ball. Maybe Ben should yell "BOO!" right before the ball gets to him.

If your one and only job was to hit a button that triggered a stop light that stopped school buses filled with little kids from running into other school buses filled with little kids, I'm guessing you'd:

A) Be paid about 150,000 times less than Nate Washington.
B) Be about 150,000 times more effective than he is at his job, which is to catch a small oblong shaped ball when it is tossed his way.

I'd love to see your analysis, SteelerWatch. Please feel free to post it which you can do without linking. Thanks!

LITP - that was a great assessment and I can't say I disagree with your thoughts. I'm not going to get down too much on Nate - it was the first preseason game and he may have had some butterflies. Remember - though he's been in the black and gold since '05, he only started playing last season when Ben really wasn't up to snuff himself. If the dropsies become a habit with Nate (which I don't believe will be the case) - off with his head! (j/k)

4. The Saints played flat all night, with a lack of intensity.

5. The Steelers looked pumped and ready to go - everyone from the 1st to the third team looked motivated - kudos to Tomlin.

It was obvious that the Saints players were taking it as just another preseason game, but it looked like the Steelers were thinking it was the regular season opener.

8. The Saints stacked the line to stop the Pittsburgh running game and left their woeful DB's in single coverage.

Yeah, Willie Parker and company were the least of their worries last night.

9. Sepulveda showed nice control with his punts, but I feel weirdly diappointed he didn't take someones head off fielding his own kick - maybe he needs to line drive a few more so he gets a shot at the returner :wink02:

All this hype about him being able to lay someone out and it never happened...it made me sad inside. But he still had some good punts...and none of them were blocked. :wink02:

10. There was still much time spent focusing on the booth chit chat while the game played out in a small window - that sucks.

Yup, I hate when they do that...it's like they forget that the football game is actually the main event.

11. Did I mention that the Saints secondary sucks, too?

You're not lying...why is Fred Thomas still a starter? I couldn't possibly name a worse starting cornerback in the league right now. And I'm glad to see that New Orleans is getting a taste of how watching Kevin Kaesviharn and Brian Simmons get burnt play after play feels like.

No, just another Bengals fan that will never give credit where credit is due. New Orleans played the game as if it were a preseason game, and we treated it like a regular season game. Guess that explains why our starters were pulled after the first series and our 3rd and 4th stringers played most of the game. The bottom line is both teams had virtually the same amount of time to prepare for the game, and the Steelers were better prepared, which I hope becomes a trend that continues right into the regular season. Besides, I would rather see what I saw last night any day of the week than the abortion I saw last preseason, and a better part of the last regular season to boot.

The Steelers looked great. Yes it's ONLY pre-season BUT, I would rather the Steellers look good during the pre-season as opposed to looking bad.

Not to mention that a good number of the Saints defensive starters were in the game until basically the end of the first quarter and still couldn't do much to stop our second string O.

OK, apparently I've been misinterpreted again. What I meant was the Steelers were firing on all cylinders already and the Saints were still stuck in training camp mode. I was actually (kind of) giving the Steelers coaches props for having their players ready to go, but hey, if you wanna make me the bad guy, go ahead. :wink02:

Bengal fans are always the bad guy.

I'd say that's a nice assessment of the game. I might be a little more lenient on Nate though. I know he's had his problems with holding onto the ball but I think he will come around.

Thanks.

Nate did totally suck, but if he has a nice game next time up then i'll give him his due.

Those were easy catches he dropped - after all the talk about his improved game in that area to come out and perform like that has to be a huge disappointment.
