SUMMARY

Raiola was a disappointing player to grade. He lacks the size and athleticism to consistently get his man blocked. He is a very smart center whose instincts, competitiveness and all-out blocking effort help him to often find a way to keep his man from disurpting/making plays. His instincts and foot quickness help him to consistently get off the ball and into blocking position quickly, which at times helps him make up for his lack of size. He gets on the defensive tackle so quickly on down/side blocks that he can usually get movement on much bigger defensive tackles. The trouble is that he lacks the bulk/size and playing strength to hold his ground against big defensive tackles. They can drive him backward on bull rushes, and can stand him up and knock him backward on straight-ahead run blocks. He is stiff in the hips and struggles to adjust and block well when he has to move his feet a lot. Overall, Raiola has all the intangibles and mental traits one could ask for in a center, but the trouble is that he is undersized and limited athletically. He might not get drafted because it's doubtful he will be a starting center in the NFL, but he might get signed as a free agent because of his smarts, intangibles, instincts and competitiveness. In the end, Raiola might not last long in the NFL because of his lack of size and athletic ability; at best, he probably will be a No. 9 or No. 10 offensive lineman.

STRONG POINTS

Raiola is a very smart center who consistently plays to the limit of his ability. He gets out of his stance and sets to block quickly; he usually makes contact with the defensive tackle first. His quickness off the ball helps him to get through to the second level quickly when he is uncovered, and he can get a seal block on the linebacker out of the play decently. He has shown play speed to pull and lead block effectively on outside runs when the defender is on his track. He works very well with the guards to switch off easily against stunts/loops, and consistently sees the delayed blitz coming and can pick it up. His competitiveness helps him do a solid job on down/side blocks.

WEAKNESSES

While Raiola has quick feet and good playing speed, he is a straight-line athlete who struggles to adjust when blocking on the move, and cannot slide quickly side-to-side to adjust to quick pass-rush moves. He does not keep his feet under himself consistently, and too often ends up leaning and reaching to make and maintain contact, and ends up falling off and losing the block. He is undersized for a center, and actually looks much smaller on film than his measured size. He gets torqued and tossed to the ground too easily, and can be driven backward into the quarterback's lap by aggressive bull rushers.

I also heard on the radio today that Okobi went down in camp and was on the ground for about five minutes.

Also, Foote and Harrison were back at practice today. Faneca and Parker were still out. Timmons went to Philly today to see a specialist about his groin.

I think this is more of a backup for depth pickup. Because this guy sure is not starting material. Ether Mahan are Okobi will get the start over this guy.

Steelers release former WVU quarterback Marshall
Wednesday, August 08, 2007

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers today released former West Virginia University quarterback Rasheed Marshall and signed center Donovan Raiola.

Also, center Sean Mahan returned to practice after taking an excused leave of absence since last Friday to attend to family matters.

Marshall was signed early this year as a receiver by the Steelers. Raiola was released last week by the St. Louis Rams. He is the brother of Dominic Raiola, Detroit's starting center.

I don't know. I caught the tail end of the radio conversation and all they stated was that he went down and was on the ground for five minutes. I'm listening to Savern and he hasn't said anything about Okobi going down.

Nice sig there 83...

It seems the center position is really up for grabs. I am not sure what the team is trying to do but I have confidence it all work out. We had a lot of great talent at the position in the 05 season. 3 first round draft choices in the O-line, and now down to 2 (Simmons and Faneca). Faneca is gone after this year, and that leaves Simmons as the only first round choice in the O-line. It would be ideal to see the Steelers really emerge with a man at center for years to come. This is a position the team has been successful in developing in the past as well.

Who thinks Mahan gets it?

Thank you. :wink02:

With Okobi getting injured every other week (first the back and then I saw ribs) and Philip not even getting a look (I haven't even noticed the guy), it's looking as if Mahan will be in there on 9/9. Plus, we are not paying Mahan good money to sit. At least I would hope not. Pure speculation on my part. For all I know, Okobi will be in there against the Browns.
