Pre-game stuff:

Kitna says hello to old teammates

DETROIT -- In the pre-game warmups at Ford Field, former Bengals quarterback Jon Kitna -- now with the Lions -- has been visiting with former Bengals teammates on the field.

Kitna and his former understudy, Carson Palmer, played catch for a few minutes, beginning about 5:15 p.m. Then they repeated a warmup game they used to play, throwing from the 20-yard line and aiming for the crossbar on the goal post. Kitna won repeatedly in the five-ball toss.

Kitna greeted several Bengal coaches and players with hugs, including wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh and assistants Ken Zampese and Jonathan Hayes. Coach Marvin Lewis also went up and greeted Kitna on the field.

DETROIT _ It looked like old times before Thursday night's preseason opener with Carson Palmer and Jon Kitna sharing passing lanes during warmups. Except, of course, here at Ford Field the big difference is that Kitna is wearing Lions' blue and Palmer had on his Bengals' grays.

They chatted a bit in between, some of which were Palmer's tosses to Chad Johnson and Johnson looked like he was suffering no ill effects of the ankle he sprained this past Monday in practice.

But there was no word yet Marvin Lewis was going to hold him out.

I don't really care if we get beat. Preseason scores don't mean anything. I just want to see (A) no injuries and (B) some back-ups and young guys play well.

Several Bengals won't play

DETROIT -- Not playing tonight for the Bengals because of injury are 18 players.

Changes to the starting lineup:

Andrew Whitworth will start at left tackle in place of Jones. Scott Kooistra will start at right tackle in place of Anderson. Chris Manderino will start at fullback in place of Johnson. And Keiwan Ratliff will start in place of Joseph.

Wide receiver Chad Johnson, who sat out practice Monday night and Tuesday at training camp, is expected to start and play.

1. Bengal offense is about the same 1st string.

Bummer.

That's about as close as it gets for practicing the game winning kick scenario.

The loss isn't a big deal for the Bengals.

Missing that kick is worrisome.

47 yards is quite a heave, though. Humorous nonetheless.

If I'm a Bengals fan, what's more worrisome is the 489 net yards passing for Detroit. I know it's only a preseason game, but that is a LOT of yards.

Final thoughts:

Carson Palmer looked sharp...certainly nothing to worry about this year.

Chad and TJ were Chad and TJ...made some good plays in limited time. They look good to go.

Rudi Johnson looked quicker than last season, had a nice 20 yard run.

Kenny Irons showed some good explosiveness, hopefully the injury was nothing too serious.

Chris Henry looks good as always, hopefully he will stay clean until his suspension is up.

Skyler Green and Bennie Brazell could both do a good job filling in for Chris Henry if Tab Perry doesn't heal or step up to the plate.

Ahmad Brooks is going to be special...290 pounds and he runs like a defensive back.

Ndukwe, the 7th round safety will be a great special teamer and could push Dexter Jackson for his job.

Domata Peko and Matt Toeaina could make a great DT duo in the future, that interception return Toeaina had was great.

Leon Hall took his bumps in his NFL debut, gave up a few catches.

Skyler Green looks like the early favorite as the punt return guy.

In general, the Bengals run defense looked awesome...however, the pass defense again looked a little questionable. Hopefully, the return of Johnathan Joseph will help bolster the secondary, but this is an area that still needs some work.

I was impressed with the first string offensive line. Without Levi Jones and Willie Anderson, they didn't miss a beat.

And of course, Shayne Graham looked great until the game winning kick. Certainly doesn't help his reputation as a clutch kicker after last season. Hopefully he won't have Mike Vanderjagt-itis.

Jeff Rowe also played well in the 2-minute drill, putting his team in position to win the game. Hopefully he will push Doug Johnson for the #2 spot, as I wasn't too impressed with Doug.

The only thing that sucks from this game is this:

The one moment of true angst came earlier in the game when rookie running back Kenny Irons limped off the field on his left ankle after a seven-yard run and was then carted from the sidelines with unspecified left knee and ankle injuries after picking up 17 yards on four carries.

Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis told reporters after the game it's a significant knee injury and there will an MRI tomorrow. The fear of course, is that Irons may have suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate injury.

When Irons went down it conjured up memories of Ki-Jana Carter's injury on his third carry as a Bengal in his first game at Detroit 12 years ago. Irons got hurt on his fourth carry.

Not cool.

Just some thoughts....anyone think that Delthea may be moved to SS in place of Jackson? His skills seem more inclined for that position..and Hall is going to be special. It seems to me that that gives them the best secondary.

....and did I see someone say that Brooks is 290lbs!!!!??? Everything I see shows him as around 260 lbs....290 is LARGE!!!

Thats what I liked the most about this game. O'neal is very injury prone. Joseph will be a good CB, but they will miss Tory James. And, IMO, Leon Hall is no better then a Nickel CB in this league.

Yeah, and the fact that he went out in Ki-Jana Carter fashion is never encouraging. Irons has said that he'll be fine and the MRI is only precautionary, but the coaching staff has been hinting that it's a little more serious. Honestly, it didn't look that bad when he was on the sidelines, he was just moving around with a limp. I guess we should find out something later today.

Just some thoughts....anyone think that Delthea may be moved to SS in place of Jackson? His skills seem more inclined for that position..and Hall is going to be special. It seems to me that that gives them the best secondary.

I've never heard anything about Deltha playing SS, but I think he would be better suited as a cornerback right now. When Johnathan Joseph comes back from his broken foot, I think he and Leon could make a good starting duo, but it would be nice to have someone like Deltha in a nickel role.

I think Dexter's replacements will be one of the guys you saw playing last night, either Marvin White or Chinedum Ndukwe. The question is how soon it will happen...both of them are hard hitters, but they still need some work in coverage.

If the secondary can get things figured out, I honestly think this defense could be in the 'teens as far as rankings go. The linebackers have gottten bigger and faster, the defensive line has gotten younger and faster, but the secondary is still a big question.

....and did I see someone say that Brooks is 290lbs!!!!??? Everything I see shows him as around 260 lbs....290 is LARGE!!!

Yeah, whoops typo there, I said Brooks is 290, he's 260 lol...still pretty big for a linebacker, but not that big. :dang:

The one thing I have to disagree with you about is missing Tory James. I think getting rid of Tory was the biggest upgrade that secondary could have done. Everyone looks at the large number of interceptions he gets and ignores the fact that he's getting burnt by players like Hines Ward on streak routes. He's also afraid of being physical and doesn't wrap up receivers (don't believe me? look at who misses the tackle on Santonio Holmes's overtime score).

Irons shelved for season
By GEOFF HOBSON
August 10, 2007
Posted: 12:35 p.m.

The Bengals' worst fears were realized Friday when an MRI revealed that rookie running back Kenny Irons is lost for the season with a tear of his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, extending a horrifying streak of bad luck when it comes to their running backs that began with a similar injury to Ickey Woods in 1989.

The club said in a news release that a full recovery is expected and that Irons should be ready to participate in next spring's workouts.

Irons, a second-rounder out of Auburn, had been one of the stars of the preseason in jetting to 64 yards on 10 carries in last week's intrasquad scrimmage. And flashing perimeter speed the club thought would be just the right complement to Rudi Johnson's inside game, Irons had just ripped off an 11-yard gain in Thursday's preseason opener in Detroit before getting hurt on his fourth carry of the game. At the end of that seven-yard run, Irons limped off the field.

The irony of Irons' situation is chilling. In a 1995 preseason game in Detroit against the Lions, running back Ki-Jana Carter, the NFL's overall No. 1 draft pick, tore his ACL on the third carry of his career.

The Bengals drafted Irons to give them what 2004 first-rounder Chris Perry hasn't been able to because of his own injury problems. Perry hasn't been on campus at Georgetown College as he rehabs from ankle surgery and plans to start his second straight season on the physically unable to perform list. The PUP takes him out of practice for the first five games and six weeks of the regular-season. In 2005, his one healthy season, he averaged 4.6 yards per carry and nearly broke the club record for catches by a running back with 51. But he has played in only 22 games of a possible 49.

CantStop85
08-10-2007, 02:04 PM
Well, looks like we have two Chris Perry's now. Very unfortunate for Irons.

Looks like it'll be Rudi, Kenny Watson, and Quincy Wilson for this season.

Too bad about Irons. I always want to beat the Bengals... but it's always better to beat them when they're at their best. I hope this kid comes all the way back.

Hopefully someone decent will be cut after preseason...the Bengals could use a little more depth now that Kenny is gone.

The pronunciation guide says "toe-EE-nuh."

Yeah, hopefully he'll got some PT this year in the DT rotation. Samoan guys seem to be pretty hard workers when it comes to football. Matt actually went to high school with the DT we drafted last year, Domata Peko...I'm hoping they will be our starting DT's of the future, that'd be pretty cool.
