View Full Version : Missed Opportunities

If one thing stood out about Pittsburgh's performance last night against Green Bay, it was the abundance of missed opportunities (mainly missed tackles). I know it was at least half a dozen times I had to scratch my head as the initial contact by our defender seemed to have brought down the KR, RB, WR, etc, and then BAM they bust another 5-6 yeards on us. Granted, this wasn't against our first team defense, but still a reason for concern. I'm sure some guys specifically, as well as the entire D, will/have hear(d) about it.

Also, what in the hell is with Anthony Smith getting screwed for playing time?? Practice he splits reps w/ the first team D with Clark, then game time he sees little to no playing time?? :dang:

On the plus side, McFadden looked great against GB. If I were a DB coach I'd take that second break up he made while lined up at nickel in the middle of the field and teach it as the textbook way to Swat + Tackle. Very impressive.

I'm sure these issues will contine to be addressed as the season is young, I'd just like to think that its a "duh" to put your best player on the field, and I'll continue to rally for A. Smith to be the guy at FS until it happens. I know The Duke's with me

...say what???

seriously tho, am I the only one who thinks A. Smith is getting screwed here??
Even MADDEN08 has sucker-punched him, but DROPPING HIS OVERALL RATING FROM LAST YEAR when he played solid with what opportunities he got. I smell a conspiracy!

A.Smith might want to look into the Madden 'slur' - everyone knows its a key component to salary negotiations.

Lies!! :sofunny:
But seriously, if Clark has to start it will be because Tomlin's best interests in the team. Smith is awesome, maybe another year as backup will do him good. But sometime soon we'll see Troy and Smith kicking asses

I can't help but think that a former DB coach wouldn't put the best guys in that secondary.

Smith isn't going anywhere and just because he isn't starting now doesn't mean he won't be by week 4.

Its going to be a wait and see. The same applies with the conversation about Santonio and LGA.

LGA, Wilson, is still the veteran. That doesn't mean Santonio won't be seeing a ton of looks.

Remember. We plan on seeing a lot of 3 WR, 4 WR sets. Its very possible that Wilson would be preferred over Holmes in the 2 WR packages for fundamentals alone. Maybe for blocking skills. Holmes would be a beast in the slot and Smith may be more valuable spelling Clark and adding a boom to a stagnant defense on a lengthy drive.

The line between "starters" and "backups" is thinning. More and more teams are keeping a constant rotation of players going and "backups" are becoming more and more important.

I must say... Its hell on us fantasy players...

One thing to remember.

AFCN Coaches who specialise in a certain area (offense, defense, DB's) will immediately lose whatever ability they had in that area once they become HC's.

Look at the evidence - its OVERWHELMING!

Marv Lewis - D coach extraordinaire!
Brian Billick - Offensive 'mastermind'

And your very own Mike Tomin - former DB coach becomes D co-ord at Minnesota who proceeed to absolutely sUcK in that area of the game joining the hapless Bengals at the bottom of the rankings.

You have been warned!

On the flipside, your offense will probably become very good!!

A compelling point not without merit. However, Cowher was a DC before coming to the Steelers and the team consistently fielded top 10 defenses for the vast majority of his tenure all the same. I'm hoping Tomlin can buck the Billick/Lewis trend. :hope:
