RB, FB spots on Steelers' depth chart up for grabs

Plenty of intrigue surrounds how the Steelers will structure their RB and FB depth chart. At running back, Willie Parker and Najeh Davenport are secure in the top two spots, but the battle for positioning thereafter bears watching.
Undrafted free-agent RB Gary Russell?s strong play in training camp and preseason looks to have secured him a spot on the roster.
Another surprising newcomer, FB Carey Davis, also looks like a lock to make the team, according to a source close to the club. What?s more, he appears to have pushed veteran Dan Kreider to the bench, despite Kreider's role as an integral part of the Steelers? power-running game in past seasons. Davis is simply a better fit in offensive coordinator Bruce Arians? scheme. However, Kreider's rugged style of play is such an asset as the weather gets colder that he will have a chance to make the roster as a reserve.
The status of backup RB Verron Haynes is also up in the air. Haynes is not especially big, quick or fast, and he?s coming off a knee injury, but he?s useful on special teams. The burning question, the way we hear it,

Holy crap!!!!...this is the first that I have heard about any definitive roster moves at RB....What does everyone think?
The Kreider move is the one that floors me!!!

If they're going to replace Kreider with Davis, I don't see why they would want to keep Kreider on the roster. I thought the main idea was to free up some space for some other younger talent.

Didn't someone post something about Kreider maybe lining up as a blocking TE?...

Didn't someone post something about Kreider maybe lining up as a blocking TE?... tomlin shot that idea down in yesterdays press conference, along with keisel playing te.

personally i would rather see 6 backs as opposed to 3 centers on the roster. the more packages we can show, the harder it will be for defenses to prepare.

Thanks Tony....did he give any indication as to why he would keep Krieder if Davis is being retained?....any thought as to if they keep Kreider at FB and move Davis to a powerback position?...and I agree about the center situation...especially if Simmons can fill in , in a pinch.

LLT,

I think Madden said something like that during the Eagles game. He said
Arians thought of FBs like TEs and he thought that was a mistake because TEs can't typically run block as well.

I'd be surprised if Kreider was a reserve. I agree Davis has a nice upside but that's a pretty big leap to my mind.

C-ya!!!!...Okobi has never been more than a wave player...he should understand that and just try to stick with the team as a backup...otherwise....

this is all he really said:

How did the FB?s do against Philadelphia?

I thought that all three showed a good representation of themselves. Dan [Kreider] did some nice things, of course, caught the ball in the flat, [and] busted Willie [Parker] through for the big run for the touchdown. Carey Davis did some good things, as did John [Kuhn]. Those guys fight tooth-and-nail and I?m enjoying it. I look forward to watching them continue to do that Thursday night.
he likes that davis can run, block, catch, and play st. however kreider showed he can catch and not many open holes like he does. he is 255 lbs of muscle. davis is giving up about 30 lbs. i think theres a place for both on the team especially if haynes is cut. if a bum linemen is cut its not out of the realm that 6 backs are kept with davis being looked at as a multi dimensional special teamer who unlike morey can actually get into the games periodically.

I am not in favor at all of releasing Kreider or placing him as a reserve - FWP needs him out in front to open up those holes. Yesterday at the Steelers Kickoff luncheon, FWP specifically thanked Dan Kreider during his speech for all he does to help him achieve - I think that speaks volumes. I realize FWP isn't the coach, but I believe the Steelers' run game flourishes with Kreider.

Mr. Arians - prove me wrong.

Keep Kreider!! Willie wants him on the team, listen to your team MVP

I hope we keep six backs, this is the way I would want it, in no specific order...

Parker
Dookie
Kreider
Russell
Haynes
and Kuhn

Parker,Dookie,Russell,Davis and Kreider...No suprise there......I thought since Davis and Russell both played well that they were locks and Barlow and Haynes would be cut...We have to keep Kreider for those critical 3rd and shorts or in the redzone were his killer blocks would be huge....

As the FB period....I doubt we see a FB start many games this year....I have a feeling the Steelers will start games with a double TE or 3 WR single back set......

I still can't believe that Kreider is going to be released or made a reserve (bearing in mind he has the 2nd largest salarycap hit out of all the RB's).

Then again, maybe Tomlin is looking at what New England is doing on their roster with their offense - we have Heath Evans in as lead blocker, but he is more than just a pure blocker (and obviously a worse blocker because of that) - he is capable of running the ball in short yardage situations and catching the ball out of the backfield.

We shall see.

I think more than a few teams will be looking at Kreider as soon as he walks out the door, should that happen.

Don't you think they would release Verron before Dan K?

So far, the analysts haven't been right about much so I would be surprised if they were right on this.

I see Dan staying and Haynes being released. Why would we keep an injury prone back when we can keep one of the besyt blocking FB's in football.

Maybe they need someone who specialises in catching the ball out of the backfield on 3rd down?

Kreider has caught some balls in his time. I am sure we have other RB's who can do it.

What good will Haynes be to us on the DL or IR?

Well im presuming that he is going to be fit to play, otherwise any talk of any the team would want him becomes moot.

Catching the ball on 3rd down in clutch situations is a very under rated skill - alot of people think anyone can do it.

Alot of fans don't see the value in Kevin Faulk, but he has made some huge plays in his time.

I don't get why everyone is so high on Davis, why its presumed that he can make it in the NFL.

They gotta keep Dan even if it's just for short yardage and goaline situations. Davis needs to stay just for his upside. I think he would be a great power back for goaline situations running behind Kreider that could be pretty sweet.

I hope that Big Dan is not released! Damn, getting rid of the power game changes everything. Ball control when keeping a lead comes to mind. I guess Arians plans on plenty of scoring through the air. Tell me it aint so!
