Okobi, Haynes among those cut by Steelers
Saturday, September 01, 2007
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Chukky Okobi, who came to training camp as the starting center, and running back Verron Haynes were among the players cut today by Coach Mike Tomlin as the Steelers reduced their roster to the final 53-player limit, the Post-Gazette has learned.

Also included in the cut were three rookie draft choices - defensive end Ryan McBean, a fourth-round pick; guard Cameron Stephenson (fifth) and wide receiver Dallas Baker (seventh).

Defensive end Shaun Nua, a seventh-round choice in 2005, and former special teams co-captain Chidi Iwuoma were also cut.

Haynes, a fifth-round draft choice in 2002, has been the team's third-down back for most of his career. But three of his previous five seasons have ended early because of knee injuries, including last season when he missed the final nine games.

Also cut were fullback John Kuhn, quarterback Bryan Randall, receivers Walter Young and Gerran Walker; tight ends Cody Boyd and Jon Dekker, tackles Jason Capizzi and Brandon Torrey; nose tackle Scott Paxson, linebackers Ron Stanley and Marquis Cooper; cornerbacks Anthony Madison and Jovon Johnson; and safeties Grant Mason and Mike Lorello.

Haynes I am a little surprised, but happy about.

Chukky I am a bit shocked.. but it will help out Salary Cap problem.

that sucks for haynes. definitely my favorite of the group. good guy and i hope he moves on to bigger, better things.

iwouma, and okolbi are mildly suprising. i thought these guys being gone would save space for haynes.

i think we have room to add a player or 2 off the waiver wire. other than the running backs i cant think of any suprises or bubble players that were kept.

Suprised but not shocked about Haynes...you could see the writing on the wall for Chukky, unfortunately, when they signed Mahan. Other than that, no major shockers, although I'm a little bummed about Capizzi; I think there's real upside there and I was hoping they'd keep him.

And now the fun begins!!!!!!

I think Whiz is going to scoop Okobi right up. I'm going to miss Verron - though he is injury prone, I liked the guy.

Okobi = Keep him and have two million sitting on the bench or roll the dice with Philip backing up Mahan? I'm a gambling man, so I prefer the second option. Between injuries during TC and not showing much in the preseason games, I do not mind seeing Okobi gone.

Capizzi = Completely outplayed Essex in all aspects of football from TC up to the the Eagles game. The problem.....not many IUP rookies make the starting team. I still felt the kid got the short end of the stick. Essex is a mess IMO. A slight wind can blow him over. It's been proven.

Kuhn = I've never seen a Steeler player get so much love and praise for doing absolutely nothing. I still can't explain it and apparently neither can the Steelers front office.

The rest who were cut sound about right. Just my two cents.

i just checked, and im pretty sure there is no room for kimo vo unless we make another cut.

we had 75 minus the 22 listed = 53

we could be set.

that means we cant pick up wali lundi! :jawdrop:

so whose gonna start off the projected 8 man practice squad list? i dont think we even have 8 eligible from the 22 we cut.

cappizzi, mcbean, and stephenson, should make it, and madison if eligible. (omg ike taylors student and roomate is gone! anthony is probably better off )

I hate keeping St. Pierre....I think if Ben or Charlie went down we could have kept St. Pierre on speed dial if needed...lol The Ravens wouldn't have signed Brian this year since they have plenty of QBs on the roster....I heard Billick's man crush on Troy Smith the other day..lol

I was hoping Capizzi made it...Hopefully he clears waivers...I'm glad Haynes and Okobi were cut....I liked Haynes...But he was always hurt...He just can't be counted on and both Davis and Russell showed promise...I never liked Okobi and he never showed enough that he can start for 16 games....lol

Since Colclough made it...Hopefully he can finally show something as the 4th or 5th corner....Just keep him away from kick returns....

THE MAN... THE MYTH...THE LEGEND

let the trumpets sound, and the speakers blast a little jimmy cliff in tribute:

Big John. Big John.

Every morning at the mine you could see him arrive.
He stood six-foot-six and weighed twofortyfive.
King of broad at the shoulder
at naroow at the hip

and everybody knew you did'nt give no lip to Big John.

Somebody seemed to know where John called home.
He just drifted into town and stayed all alone.
He did'nt say much a kind a quiet and shy

and if you spoke at all
you just said "hi" to Big John.

Big John. Big John. Big John.

Big Bad John.

Nobody said he came from New Orleans

where he got in a fight over a Cajun Queen

and a crashing blow from a huge right hand

sent a Louisiana fellow to the promised land. Big John.

Big John. Big John. Big John.

Big John.

Then came the day at the bottom of the mine

when a timber cracked and the men started craying.
Miners were praying and hearts beat fast

and everybody thought that they'd breathed their last 'cept John.

Through the dust and smoke of this man made hell
walked a giant of a man that the miners knew well.
Grabbed a sagging timber and gave out with a grown

and like a giant oak tree
just stood there alone. Big John.

Big John. Big John. Big John.

Big John.

And with all of his strength
he gave a mighty shove;
then a miner yelled out
there's a light up above!
And twenty men scrambled from a would be grave

and now there's only one left down there to save
Big John.

With jacks and timbers they started back down

then came that rumble way down in the ground

and smoke and gas belched out of that mine

everybody knew
it was the end of the line for for Big John.

Big John. Big John. Big John.

Big Bad John.

Now they never reopened that worthless pit

they just placed a marble stand in front of it;
These few words are written on that stand:
At the bottom of this mine lies a big
big man; Big John.

Big John. Big John.

Big Bad John.

Big John. Big John. ...

Big Bad John ...

No real stunners

Coclough survives over Madison - Tomlin was busy coaching the Vikes & not watching the Bengals game last September, so I will attribute Coke surviving to Tomlin not carrying around my bitterness about teh fumbled punt.

Not surprised to see Haynes & Okobi gone - Haynes hopefully will get picked up somewhere and I agree Okobi will land in Arizona - hopefully the $$ saved on Okobi will get the Simmons deal done.

I think they figure Caprizzi and Kuhn are uys they can pass waivers and stash on the PS, also Walter Youngkuhn and young arent practice squad elligible. the steelers effectively told them "we dont want you...EVER!"

actually if either is sitting at home in the middle of the season and we are fighting some injury battles im sure the steelers will have their numbers handy. otherwise the steelers are letting 31 other teams have a crack at them and not looking back.

I just believe that the Steelers will miss Haynes and his blocking and picking up the blitz, but maybe Davis or Willie will get it done. I just hate to see the guy go.. we always had a winning record with him playing just remember that. I hate that Kuhn just didnt get much of a chance this preseason with the emergence of Davis and Russell. He will probably end up in Baltimore with the Ravens now. I think that Okobi will end up in Arizona probably also. I like the move of keeping DB rookie Gay.. he is a real hitter in the secondary and he should excell on special teams as well. I seen all the signs that maybe even Dallas Baker being gone and the way he has played I'm surprised he made it this far. Now, I just hope that Timmons and Woodley are ready for the regular season. Woodley got off to a big start but hasnt done much since. As far as Matt Spaeth... he needs to just get on the field and make 1 play to get me off his back!! A 3rd round draft pick and didnt block well or recieve a pass in the preseason. The release of DB Anthony Madison kind of surprised me as well..

Steelers Release 23 Players Following Trade With Atlanta;
Trim Roster To 53
PITTSBURGH ? The Steelers today released 23 players and made a trade with the Atlanta Falcons in order to trim their roster to the NFL's league minimum of 53 players.
The players released from the Steelers roster include WR Dallas Baker, TE Cody Boyd, OT Jason Capizzi, TE Jon Dekker, RB Verron Haynes, CB Chidi Iwuoma, CB Jovon Johnson, FB John Kuhn, S Mike Lorello, CB Anthony Madison, CB Grant Mason, DE Ryan McBean, DE Shaun Nua, C Chukky Okobi, DT Scott Paxson, C Marvin Philip, QB Bryan Randall, LB Ron Stanley, OG Cameron Stephenson, OT Brandon Torrey, WR Gerran Walker, LB Rian Wallace and WR Walter Young.
Additionally, the Steelers traded a 2008 conditional draft pick to the Atlanta Falcons for return specialist/cornerback Allen Rossum. Rossum (5-8, 178), a 10-year veteran from Notre Dame, was originally drafted in the third round (85th overall) of the 1998 by the Philadelphia Eagles. He then was traded to the Green Bay Packers and spent two seasons (2000-01) with the team before signing with the Falcons as an unrestricted free agent on March 13, 2002.
Rossum, a 2005 Pro Bowl selection as a special teams returner, holds the Falcons record for career punt return yards (1,723), career kickoff return yards (5,489) and career punt returns for touchdowns (2).
All NFL teams may sign up to eight players to their practice squad after noon on Sunday, Sept. 2.

So is Rossum here is case Reid goes in the tank. Or is he here to pave the way for Von Olehoffen, possibly cutting coclough.

Stapleton was playing center in pre-season, besides Simmons could slide over and Kemo would start at guard.

Both Phillips and Stapleton were playing guard and center. I guess Stapleton played both positions better.

I was a little surprised they kept Essex over Capizzi. Then again both Okobi and Essex would probably go to Arizona. We might as well try and keep Capizzi on the PS and try to trade Essex later on.

I agree. I was a little worried about Haynes coming back to try and earn a roster spot. Just crowded an already full backfield.

I'm much more excited to see Russell work than sad to see Haynes go.

Besides, this is a commitment that Willie will more than likely see more 3rd down looks.

You always want your best guys out there and with Willie proving last year that he's the man (and Haynes proving he's a twig when its comes to breaking down) we are going to have our best talent out there every down.

Anyone else suprised we kept reid and traded for Rossum? Would have loved to keep that spot open for Chidi or Capezi.

My roommate said the exact same thing when I read the trade to him.

I really don't know either, but I, too, would have loved to keep Cappezi.

I'm not sure Tomlin has the same ideas as Cowher when it comes to "special team stars," letting Morey walk and now Chidi being cut.

Can't say I'm too surprised about that one.

no. reid is a solid wr prospect. most teams use 1 guy for punt return and another for kick off return. maybe rossum just prevents us from having najeh or holmes returning kick offs.

That, too.

The further down the depth chart the returner is on offense or defense the better, IMO.

On my team, Steve Smith returning punts would scare the life out of me every time.

If you can get a solid return man out of your 5th corner or 4th WR you can survive a catastrophic injury on returns usually.

im seeing two different versions of which players were cut...........one states that rian wallace was cut and the other states that marquis cooper was cut. does anyone else see this? post gazzette has one version and steelers site has the other. can anyone confirm which is correct or have i had too many IRON CITY's?

Damn.

The official site is saying Rian Wallace.

I would imagine that has to be the right one. I was looking at the Copper one.

Thought Rian would make it and was a good LBer who we were grooming.. Wierd cut.. Does this mean we will stop grooming like we have done forever... Someone will pick up Rian this week and he will start for them.

I am looking at the official steelers site and according to their roster chart we officially has no-one listed as a center.

I know we are carrying three guys that can play center Mahan, Simmons & stapleton. What is the depth chart possibly going to be for that position.

I am surprised that Cooper also beat out Wallace

I have to agree with you.

One play can damage two aspects of the game... if it is your 4th or 5th receiver, it really doesn't affect it.

so who is the backup center now? and is there any chance we bring back kimo?

simmons is the back up center and i think there are no thoughts of bringing back kimo at the vet minimum. if there were i think you would see 52 on the current roster as opposed to our 53.

In some ways, I am kinda surprised about chukky. Wondering also if they tried him at a Guard position as backup.

I will tell you all this much... if we lose a center this year...

everyone will start pointing fingers....

Sure is tough being coach!!

so is it safe to say the okobi cut was a salary cap cut more than anything?

Naa..

Davis will actually contribute.

Either Davis or Russell will be inactive for almost every game, unless there is a injury.

I'm glad Dan stayed. But REALLY glad to see Kerry Davis make it! I really like that guy.

that sucks for haynes. definitely my favorite of the group. good guy and i hope he moves on to bigger, better things.

iwouma, and okolbi are mildly suprising. i thought these guys being gone would save space for haynes.

i think we have room to add a player or 2 off the waiver wire. other than the running backs i cant think of any suprises or bubble players that were kept.

Cutting Chidi surprised me....other than that...I was thinking that Young may had earned a roster spot...Capizzi & Baker should be signed to the practice squad.

....and I am hereby starting my campaign to sign Quinten Moses who was cut by the Raiders!!!!! (never give up...never admit you were wrong!!!:flap:)

We also have Darnell Stapleton who started 13 games at center with Rutgers last season. That o-line only allowed eight sacks all year while opening up the way for Rice to rush for 1,794 yards. I'm not saying I would be at all comfortable if Mahan goes down, but at least we have two guys with some experience at the center position.

Without looking past this season the future at runningback and Dback look great. I think the youth on this team is going to reenergize some of the older vets on the team. I really like the direction Tomlin and Colbert are taking this team.

i am mad that we cut walter young.... i think that he would of been a good wr for us.. i mean he's hella tall and we could of used that height diff as a mismatch since we are opening up the passing game

I have a feeling that the coaches were afraid of his speed or should I say lack of speed. I really liked Young but he is pretty slow for s NFL reciever.

I have never seen what others see in him.he was a top notch, ultimate character guy that steelerfans pretend to take so much pride in. he was a locker room favorite. he brought team unity, bonding, and that family atmosphere to the club and the community. he did his job with no question and never bitched. he fought his ass off for another chance with the team he loved.

many teams wouldve passed on him for a thug with more talent....

Too true...

but even two years ago, I questioned why we were keeping him. He just seemed like he never really was able to show enough as a runner to fill in if our 1st got hurt, or show enough as a FB to same a place there.

He may be doing good now, by when does he get injured again? It just seems like too much of a risk to keep him.

He DID look good in the 3rd quarter Thursday, but a vet SHOULD look good against a 3rd string.

How what are the chances we see him with the Bengals?

i cant answer all those questions. all i can answer is what people saw in him (mainly the rooneys, cowher and colbert). oh, and for the most part, he helped keep kordell, tommy , and ben off their ass on 3rd down. his ypc average isnt too bad either.

the bungles can use all the rb help they can get, especially one who can act as a security blanket for palmer and give insider info of the steelers. personally i hope he goes to a team like green bay, where he may serve more than just a spy. or a pump n dump project.

Yep. I tend to follow Steeler players that go on, hoping that they fall with teams that can treat them right.

With Irons gone for a year, I wonder if the Bungles will pick him up for the year, but I am really hopping he doesn't go there. I just hate seeing class go to that organization.

I too wish we had a tall receiver for those jump balls on a fade! Gotta have speed in the League! Other than that, I'd say we kind of expected our current roster.
