Petrino: DeAngelo Hall faces 'significant discipline'
Associated Press

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons coach Bobby Petrino said Monday there will be "significant discipline" for cornerback DeAngelo Hall, whose meltdown played a crucial role in the loss to Carolina.

Despite shutting down receiver Steve Smith through most of the Panthers' 27-20 win Sunday, Hall lost his cool and drew three penalties for 67 yards on Carolina's game-tying drive in the third quarter.

Hall, enraged by the penalties, then engaged Petrino and assistant coach Joe Whitt Jr. in heated sideline tirades.

At one point, Hall had to be restrained by three players.

Hall earned his second straight Pro Bowl berth last season, but his status for next week's game against Houston is uncertain.

"We certainly don't like the actions that took place on the field and do not like the actions that happened on the sideline and that's something that we'll deal with," Petrino said. "There will be substantial discipline. It will be handled in-house."

When asked if Hall faces a possible suspension, Petrino said "We haven't come to any conclusions yet. We're keeping all our options open, but we certainly will do something."

Hall complained after the game that each of the three penalties were called by the same referee. He said he and Smith were "jawing back and forth" but only he was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.

"The calls could have easily went the other way," Hall said. "They went against us. We didn't catch a break the whole day. It was just typical of the season right now. We're just not catching breaks."

Petrino would not say if any of Hall's tirade was personal.

Said Hall on Sunday: "We just were talking, talking about the plays that happened. He was telling me what he thought and I was telling him what I felt."

Since the season is shot, Hall's stunt is dominating pro football talk here, with many noting this crap came from another fine alum of Virginia Tech.

What is the deal with these kids from VT? I used to think Miami players were bad, I guess I was wrong.

Whats going to be sad is if Petrino gets fired for circumstances that are beyond his control and not get a chance to build a team that works with his system.

Absolutely - Petrino's NFL coaching career could be irreparably damaged by the trainwreck formerly known as the Atlanta Falcons, and it's through no fault of his own.

Petrino is generally regarded as getting a gold plated pass for this season (although it is murky who got the bright idea to bring in Leftwich) both in terms of Vick being blamed for having left a toxic cloud surrounding his departure and L'ville having collapsed since Petrino left.

The Falcons problem is that they simply do not have playmakers on either side of the ball.
The guy who may be on the hot seat is Rich McKay for having assembled this talent.

looks like the falcons are now the laughing stock of the NFL... they have even passed the raiders

The Falcons organization is a joke. I personally place blame on Vick and the constant lipservice Blank gives him. Vick has destroyed 2 head coaches, and now he's suspended for the year. He tied up the Falcons' pockets with that multi-million dollar contract and...Let's just say it's not pretty at all.

The good news for the Falcons is that Petrino will probably be able to pick up Brohm in the draft. I think that kid is the real deal.

An update:

Falcons fine Hall $100,000, may suspend him for part of next game

Associated Press

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- In another distraction for the Atlanta Falcons, Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall said Wednesday he's been fined $100,000 and may be suspended for at least a quarter of the next game for his meltdown last week against the Carolina Panthers.

Hall wasn't pleased with the decision and plans to appeal through the NFL Players Association.

The Falcons (0-3) acted quickly after their defensive star was called for three penalties totaling 67 yards on one possession, including two personal fouls, then got into a heated sideline confrontation with coach Bobby Petrino and an assistant.

The penalties led to a Carolina touchdown that tied the game at 17 in the third quarter. The Panthers went on to a 27-20 victory.

Asked if he thought the punishment was fair, Hall said, "I don't think so. They think so, but I don't think so. My agent is working on it with the union and hopefully we can get something worked out."

Hall said he might be suspended for either the first quarter or first half of Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, whose offense is directed by former Falcons quarterback Matt Schaub.

Petrino would only confirm a decision was reached on disciplining Hall, but wouldn't discuss the details.

"It is something that we are keeping in house," the first-year coach said.

Given his salary Hall probably took a proportionally lighter financial hit than Belicheat. Falcons should have suspended him - not the message Petrino should be sending to a very disenchanted fan base.

Of course, the next looming drama is whether Leftwich plays if Harrington is not horrible - if anyone else saw the ESPN show on Vick last night you got a look on how the fan base breaks down on anything tied to race in ATL.

The Falcons franchise is a complete train wreck.
