Leinart still starter, with Warner ready to run Cardinals' no-huddle offense again
By The Associated Press
Tuesday, September 25, 2007

TEMPE, Ariz. - Matt Leinart still is the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals.
Kurt Warner will be still waiting in the wings as the team's "no-huddle" specialist after nearly leading the team to a comeback victory at Baltimore on Sunday.

"We're going to try to find ways to keep Kurt playing based on how he played yesterday," coach Ken Whisenhunt said on Monday. "But I don't feel like Matt has done anything to lose the job."

How Leinart feels about this unusual two-quarterback approach is a mystery. As reporters crowded around Warner in the locker room Monday, Leinart walked past with a towel over his head, grabbed the playbook out of his locker, and left.

Warner, the former Super Bowl and two-time league MVP in his 11th NFL season, was happy just to get an opportunity to get back on the field.

"It is a little bit weird," he said, "but at the same time to be in a backup role, for somebody to basically say 'Here's an opportunity for you to play weekly,' that excites me."

The Cardinals trailed the Ravens 20-3 at the half and 23-6 after three quarters, but Warner threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Anquan Boldin, then Neil Rackers' 41-yard field goal tied it at 23-23 with 1:50 to play.

With the help of a questionable unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Adrian Wilson, the Ravens drove downfield and Matt Stover kicked the winning 46-yard field goal as the game ended.

Whisenhunt, offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers for three seasons before coming to Arizona, said he had used the no-huddle approach before at Baltimore because it stifles the shifty Ravens' defense and combats the extreme crowd noise.

"It was something that we predetermined was going to happen about the second quarter just for a change of pace," Whisenhunt said. "During the course of game-planning for these guys, we felt Kurt was much more comfortable with it and would operate it more efficiently."

Warner completed 15-of-20 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Leinart was 9-for-20 for 53 yards.

Whisenhunt said it is unfair to compare the two because the offense Warner ran didn't allow the Ravens to do all the shifting they did when Leinart was in the game. Plus, the team played better with Warner, and Leinart had four of his passes dropped.

"To me as far as fairly evaluating the two guys, it's kind of like apples and oranges," the coach said. "I don't think you can."

Adding the no-huddle approach, with Warner at quarterback, gives future opponents more to prepare for, the coach said.

"It's not maybe the perfect scenario," Whisenhunt said, "but I think of out respect for Kurt and what he's done, and also as Matt's worked hard and done what we've asked him to do, that's the best approach for us right now."

Warner acknowledged the possibility of Leinart losing confidence.

"I think there's definitely a danger in that, but at the same time we've got to do what's going to be most successful for this football team," Warner said. "And Matt's going to be just fine. That's what he's got to understand."

Warner said he tried to explain to the young quarterback that it was the no-huddle package that led to Sunday's success, and that it is still Leinart's team.

"I hear the reports 'Well Matt got benched.' That wasn't the case. Everybody's taking it wrong," Warner said. "That's the stuff you've got to stymie and let Matt know it isn't about that. 'You're the guy. Continue to do what you do.'"

When Leinart makes a mistake or two in front of the home crowd, the boos and calls for Warner are inevitable.

That brings a smile to Warner's face.

A year ago, in a 16-14 loss to St. Louis, Warner was booed off the field after throwing three interceptions and fumbling away a snap that cost an attempt at a game-winning field goal.

"Now here we are and they want me back in there," Warner said. "It's the business. People are fickle. 'What have you done for me lately?' They always are ready on the bandwagon or off it based on what you did yesterday."

Leinart will be the starter as long as he keeps working hard and keeps improving, Whisenhunt said.

"If Matt does not play well and continues to not play well, then that's something you have to look at," Whisenhunt said. "What we've said, not just with the quarterback position but with this team, is if you're not playing well and somebody else is playing better, they're going to play.

"But that's not the case here. That's not what happened yesterday with Matt and Kurt."

:hunch: But if I'm a member of the defensive line I'm thinking this is a game to grab some tackles and sacks for themselves.

I wouldn't say the linebackers are being greedy but they are hoarding the chips. Keisel's shot over Russ Grimm's bow (:bringit:) may be just a taste of things to come. God let's hope so.

Warner on the no huddle, that sounds interesting, not that it will work though, our D will be all over him

Leinart = Fresh meat for the defense.

I doubt very seriously your going to see Wiz play Leinart very long. Me thinks they may have to scrape him off the turf in Zona.

Note the statement by Whiz that Leinart will be the starter as long as he keeps working hard - stories out of Arizona say the coaches are on Leinart for not putting in sufficient prep time to master the playbook (since that was the same rap on Ben maybe Whiz needs to edit the playbook). Warner apparently has been brought in to run the no hudlle because Leinart does not have sufficient understanding of the offense to run it.

IMO we will be seeing Warner before halftime on Sunday.

You make good points, Dan. I agree with you that Warner will be in there before the half, as I've got a feeling Leinart's official "introduction" to the Steelers D is not going to be pretty. I almost feel sorry for him.....almost. :wink02:

No huddle or not - Leinart or Warner - Tomlin and Lebeau will master a game plan to counteract whatever Frick and Frack throw at our D. :jammin:

As long as the team doesn't get over confident I guess its OK for me to be right??

Boldin is an animal, but aside from him I don't see much heart on that team. IMO, Whiz needs to worry more about his defense getting run over than how well his QB's play.

leinart is just as slow and afraid of the pass rush. he will wet his pants like a little school girl when he sees all the blitzes we throw at him.

Once again, the Best Talent, and the Better Team is wearing Black and Gold this weekend. I'm sure we'll be in our Home Jerseys down in AZ, with the roof open and the sun shining down to make our guys sweat...no problem.

last week I predicted 9 points by the 9ers...yet they tricked me with some garbage points in the end. this week, Arizona will score 13 points, one touchdown early, then held to kicking from outside the redzone. Steelers will score a TD early, then another, then a field goal, then another TD, and the Steelers will be victorious once more, 24-13, and 4-0 will be a nice place to be in the AFC North.

I think kurt Warner, Honestly Could Dismantle This Steeler Defense...
He has one Many a Big game and knows how to Deliver quickly.
He Has A Relationship With God and we all know What the Power of Prayer Can Do.
I just See Kurt Warner as a QB with Great poise , and i know he can find open men.... Leinart is Super young and does not have any confidence right now. That Translates Into just crappy play. I have no confidence in Leinart. He Came in and made plays his first season. But over the course of Time and Coaching changes and different Trials he is facing he has Cracked... When you see a Rush and just lay down and Cover up, that shows your a Broken Man/QB. He is Scared right now to make mistakes... That is not Winning Football. Screw Mistakes they happen ... Why fear a pick if your condident enough to March down the field the Next Drive to make up for it. Lienart Doesnt have that Feeling yet...
Personally i like the Card's they have been Crappy for to long. i hope they come out and Give us a Game. I think they will. And if i was in Vegas i wouldnt bet Against them if Warner is in the game... Yes Steelers own. There is No Denying that. But a blowout is just one Possibility. Another would be Warner Showing himself Stong and putting some points on the board.

:yep:

steelers will be in black and it will be hot, but it will be nothing compared to what tomlin went through in training camp in the black sweats in the middle of 100% humidity in august, up in latrobe. i wouldnt wish that on my worst enemy.

and i live in the desert. it has to be a hell of alot worse than what all the great HS preps in texas and florida deal with. the steelers can hang. it should be excellent weather for a nice game of football.

Looks like Whiz and Grimm will be able to see what it looks like from the other sideline when the Steelers are kicking someone's ass.

Leinart...Warner...it doesn't matter, the Steelers will roll.

At the end of the day, the Steelers will be 4-0.

Well, let's think for a minute. Our defensive mantra for this season is that we are going to dictate to them how the game will be played.

So, how do we think that is going to play out, against Whiz and Grimmy? What do we think they are going to think?

They are going to try and throw, is what that means. They figure that they have some pretty potent weapons, and Whiz certainly remembers last year's debacle with Ike and knows that we haven't faced any good QBs yet. They know that teams who beat the Steelers over the last two years did it by piling up points early and often.

So, we will dictate the game by playing suffocating pass defense. This is the week we get to see how Lebeau has mixed in Cover 2. But sometimes we will jam the receivers hard at the line. We'll force them to mix in the shorter passes, then we'll sit on the routes and intercept; on the longer routes look for coverage sacks. Hampton covers the run; the Cards don't have the line to beat us. Okobi, our "center of the future", lost out to a UDFA.

Last week's game tape will be useless for AZ. Those weaknesses have already been identified and will be addressed and corrected. Tomlin is one week ahead already.

Even still, stopping them won't be easy. Leinart and Fitz are great talents, and they can put up the numbers against us. But we get the ball, too. Honestly, this is going to be the week the Steelers score at will. I look for 40+ points from Ben & Co.

I dunno, 45-17, 45-23, something like that.

I don't see how Leinart to do really anything against the Steelers this week. Really, he hasn't impressed me at all this year and it's only going to get worse against the Steelers D this Sunday. Even if they put in Warner, I'm not scared of him.

It's only been in the high 70s the last few days in Las Vegas. I doubt it will be that hot in Phoenix on Sunday. Doesn't matter. Our D will make Whisenhunt rue the day he left the Steelers.

heres a quote from an article about the roof being open-

"Here's a tipoff that it won't be: The Cardinals will wear their usual home, red jerseys, which means the Steelers will dress in white. Also, the Cardinals usually keep their roof close during hot weather; in fact, they were criticized a few times last year when they closed it on cooler days."

If I might quote an old wrestling line used by the Rock...

"IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO YOUR STARTING QB IS"

We will game plan and be prepared for both. The Steelers will be exceptional and are expected to be great in all phases of the game. The trust the players have in each other is evident, they make their assignments, don't try to play over themselves, do what they are required to do and win as a team. 3 games, 3 dominant performances. The 4th is on the way.

It looks like it is starting at 3:15 EST, which would make it 12:15 PM in AZ - I don't think the schedule makers took into account that Arizona doesn't observe daylight savings time when this game was scheduled(?) - that's the only thing I can think of that would account for the odd starting time.

Ok, I checked the weather for this weekend in Phoenix and I was wrong. It says it will be 97 on Sunday. I can't believe it is so much hotter in Phoenix than in Las Vegas this year. It is in the mid 80s here in Las Vegas right now. I should have checked before saying anything. My bad.
