Elena Desserich was a vibrant 5 year old with such a big heart for taking care of others. The budding artist and writer was diagnosed with Diffused Brain Stem Glioma after Thanksgiving 2006. An inoperable brain tumor, DIPG as it is referred to, has a horribly dim prognosis with nearly all children passing away in 7-12 months. In August after trying experimental treatments at St. Jude and Children?s Hospital, Elena lost her battle and earned her angel wings. With her passing, her parents vowed to continue to fight her battle and they started The Cure Starts Now Foundation. The foundation seeks to raise funds to support research and experimental treatments for brain tumors. The parents found in the nine months of battling this tumor, that DIPG receives little funding for research. Because of the lack of funding, most parents have little or no treatments to try to help their children. The Cure Starts Now seeks to change this lack of funding. In just two months, the foundation has raised over $40,000. In an effort to raise additional funds, football they have teamed up with Coit Services to raffle off 11th row tickets to the Steelers game in October. Raffle tickets are $10 each and can be purchased online at thecurestartsnow.org . 100% of the proceeds go towards pediatric brain tumor research. In addition to the tickets, a 10 person behind the scenes tour of the Bengals stadium.
