CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Carnell Williams suffered a potentially career-threatening torn patellar tendon in his right leg Sunday in a 20-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers, according to a source close to Williams.

Williams, who has battled injuries throughout his three-year NFL career, was tackled by safety Chris Harris with approximately three minutes left in the first half. Williams fell awkwardly and grabbed his right leg just below the knee following contact.

The patellar tendon helps hold the kneecap in place. An injury to the tendon can have significant impact on an athlete's ability to jump or accelerate, even after it heals following surgery. Williams is expected to see renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday, according to a member of Williams' family.

Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden declined to discuss any specifics about the injury. However, both Williams and quarterback Jeff Garcia acknowledged the seriousness of the injury. In addition, the entire Bucs team came onto the field as Williams was carted off.

"I don't know what it is, all I know is it's severe," said Williams, who was in the locker room briefly after the game.

"I'm sure that Cadillac knew at that point his season was over," said Garcia, when asked about the team's gesture. "We just wanted him to know how much we support him."

Always liked Caddy... It's ashame to see him struggling the past two seasons after the absolute show he put on his rookie year... Great guy... Good luck to him man... It's a good thing they have some capable back ups down in Tampa :)

Man I really like him too. That sucks, it's the same injury LeCharles Bentley got in training camp 2006 and that Browns corner Gary Baxter had last year (only he tore one in each knee I think it was).

I like his style, swagger and his unmet potential. I hope he comes back better than before.

Patellar tendon was what Greg Lloyd tore up to open the 1996 season in Jax.

Surgery & rehab are light years ahead of treatment 10 years ago but Lloyd was nowhere near the same afterwards although he played 2 more seasons.

That is terrible news
