Miami Of Ohio To Retire Ben's Number :tt02:

In a pregame ceremony this Saturday, October 13th, Miami University will retire jersey number 7 in honor of one of its greatest athletes, football superstar Ben Roethlisberger. He becomes only the third athlete in Miami football history to have his number retired.

The former RedHawk quarterback, now a star with the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers, led Coach Terry Hoeppner's 2003 club to 13 consecutive victories, a Mid-American Conference Championship, and a victory in the GMAC Bowl. Roethlisberger earned Third-Team All-America honors during his record-breaking junior season. A three-time MVP at Miami, "Big Ben" smashed the school's passing records from 2001-03, achieving nearly unreachable career records of 10,829 passing yards and 84 touchdown passes.

Among the special guests who are attending Saturday's ceremony will be his parents, Ken and Brenda Roethlisberger, and Jane Hoeppner, the wife of the late Terry Hoeppner. Also expected in attendance are the only other two Miami football players who have had their jersey numbers retired: Bob Hitchens (#40), a legendary running back who played from 1971-73, and John Pont (#42), who not only played for MU (1949-51) but also served as the school's head coach (1956-62).

At this time, there is no specific word on whether Ben will attend the ceremony. If I hear further, I will post it.

Also, Terry Hoeppner, the beloved Miami coach who died this past summer, will be honored by the University on Saturday with a special commemorative plaque that will hang in the Cradle of Coaches Plaza. Hoeppner, who compiled a record of 48 wins and 25 losses from 1999-2004, will be represented by his wife, Jane.

With the Steelers having a bye week, I am sure he'll be attending this great honor. They normally won't do it without the person being present.

That is awesome. What a huge accomplishment for Ben. I bet his parents are so proud of him and I hope he's able to make it. That's also cool that they will be honoring Hoeppner because Ben always spoke highly of him.

Great for Ben. Hopefully he plays well enough and gets us some more Super Bowl rings so that he can have his Steelers jersey retired.

lol I wouldn't put it past him... Ben ditched a Pro Bowl a couple of years ago because he needed to attend the 'Oscars' (according to Rich Eisen at least).. Although having your number retired somewhere is a lot different.

And by the way, this post makes me wonder
which Steelers numbers has been retired...
I thought I knew it, but I search in google and according to Wikipedia this
is what it came up...

Retired numbers
70 Ernie Stautner

Unofficially" retired numbers
The Steelers no longer officially retire uniform numbers; however, the following numbers are out of circulation and understood to be unofficially retired:
12 Terry Bradshaw (1970-1983)
32 Franco Harris (1972-1983)
36 Jerome Bettis (1996-2005)
47 Mel Blount (1970-1983) - Last issued to Linebacker Ronald Stanley after
he was signed to the active roster on November 11, 2006.
52 Mike Webster (1974-1988)
58 Jack Lambert (1974-1984)
59 Jack Ham (1971-1982)- Used once in 1984 by Todd Seabaugh, who played
one season with the team. According to legend, the equipment manager?who assigns jersey numbers to new players?later stripped Seabaugh of the
number because he "wasn't Jack Ham". The number has not been used since.
63 Dermontti Dawson (1988-2000)
75 "Mean" Joe Greene (1969-1981)

Maybe you guys Steelers history experts...
can tell me this is correct?

Of course he's going. Do you think it's a coincedence it's happening on the Steeler's BYE week.

They probably don't want to commit to him coming so they don't have to deal with 10,000 Steelers fans with no game to watch Sunday!

Cheers to Ben! This is a great honor.
