I think that Chad is a ridiculous selfish butt-clown...but I have to agree with the writer that his selfishness isnt the cause of there woes.

Bengals have issues; Chad's not one of 'em

Emmitt Smith came to Chad Johnson's defense the other day on ESPN ? said the flamboyant wide receiver is being made the "escape goat" for the Cincinnati Bengals' woes this season ? and now a lot of those hide-behind-a-bogus-name Internet posters and airwave anonymous radio callers are mocking Smith.

Inarticulate, they say. Embarrassing. A mush-mouthed former jock who doesn't know a scape from an escape.

In my book, some of those web weasels and talk-radio toadies need to get a life. Verbiage aside, Emmitt had it right.

I wrote this in my "Through the Arch" blog after Sunday's Bengals' game and I'm bringing it up here again. Johnson is being unfairly singled out by certain media types, some Bengals fans and, if ESPN's Chris Mortensen is to be believed ? and he's one of the best in the business ? "a prominent member of the Bengals organization."

They say Johnson ? for all those catches against double-and-sometimes-triple-coverage ? might not be worth the trouble. He's high maintenance, they say. Egotistical, divisive, not team-oriented.

Some think the Bengals might be better off to trade him after the season. A few say get rid of him now.

And that brings us back to Smith. His escape goat is perfect terminology.

The Bengals most dynamic player is being turned into a can-chewing, head-butting billy goat while the real culprits are slipping back into the barnyard shadows. I'm talking about:

? A defense that misses tackles, doesn't pressure the quarterback, rarely stops a big-time runner and gives up more than 31 points a game, second-worst in the NFL.

? A coaching staff that hasn't always brought its A game on Sunday afternoons and one Monday night.

? A front office that too often brings in on-their-last-legs, fire-sale free agents who never create so much as a spark here.

? Fellow teammates who flaunt the law and NFL rules until they are arrested, suspended and mothballed for much of the season.

Meanwhile, what has Johnson done?

He's the only player ever to lead his conference in reception yards four years straight. And this season he's second in the NFL to Randy Moss, who's played seven games to his six.

His mere presence on the field ? and the defensive attention that draws ? opens things up for receiving mate T.J. Houshmandzadeh and often spreads the defense enough so that Bengals runners Rudi Johnson and now Kenny Watson don't face an overstacked defensive front.

Johnson works hard in practice, has an overwhelming passion to win and is fun in a mostly tongue-in-cheek way. Off the field, he stays out of trouble, does a lot for the community and charities worldwide and he brings favorable national attention to a city often over looked and a franchise that has been a flop for the better part of two decades.

You want to trade that?

If the team were 4-2, not 2-4, none of this would come up.

And Mortensen's reporting aside, if you want a real insider's tip on this team, there are Bengals players who are malcontents, disrespectful of their coach and poor teammates.

But they're not Chad Johnson.

Like Smith said, he's being made a goat while others escape.

That's ludicrous.

Chad is the reason the defense sucks and why other players can't stay healthy or out of trouble. Damn that selfish bastard.

There is an awful lot of apology going on in this article. First off, Emmett has to go. The dude just doesn't grasp the English language and I cringe almost as much watching him as I do Michael Scott on "the Office".

Secondly, Chad's antics are a distraction. They ARE "me first". The do run counter to a team philosophy. He DID punch a coach in the locker room at halftime in the Steelers playoff loss. He mouths off in the media. He did have a couple events where he offerred prizes then never gave them away, and I wonder, given his past and his character, as well as the team he plays for, if he's just as much trouble off the field but simply hasn't been caught yet.

Just because the guy throws up stats and is talented shouldn't let him off the hook. He's just as accountable as anyone else on the team IF he kept his mouth shut, but by being vocal, he calls all the extra BAD attention to himself as well. It works both ways.

I think that Chads antics take the attention off some of the real issues...Having a self-promoting idiot on your team would suck....but it STILL beats having a worlthless double-talking coach and a handful of players that cant produce because they are suspended.

Agree 100%.

By no means do I feel Chad is the ONLY reason why that 'organization' is a complete joke. I mean, look at the head coach for starters. But Chad Johnson doesn't help the problems in my opinion. I wish Chad and that team nothing but the worst. They made their bed, now they have to sleep in it.

heres delusional chad in a nutshell-

last friday, on his weekly sirius radio spot, he was explaining to schein and wilcots how he has been getting fined for uniform codes violations. he likes to use the black or orange tape to tape up. the nfl mandates players use the white tape. heres his take:

"white doesnt even match... im not gonna go out there looking like a dork."

schein and wilcots appeased his insatiable hunger with much laughter. and i wondered when he hasnt looked like a dork.

here's an old cliche that sums it up......

"if your not part of the solution, then your part of the problem "

Chad's assclown antics certainly aren't making his team better !!! the moron wants no part of being a team leader, because he's to busy trying to be a one man show.

Is that with or without the underage girls :flap:

I agree, Chad is not THE reason but he doesn't help matters any.

Porter used to do the exact same thing with his yellow gloves. He would accept league fines every week because he wanted to wear yellow since it matched.

I have come around to the view Emmitt is unintentional comedy worth watching - we should get a segment each week in which Emmit mangles the language

My favorite recent Emmittism was his quote of Jim Valvano's line in Valvano's speech at the ESPYs as he was terminally ill to "don't give up, don't ever give up."

In Emmittspeak that was translated recently as "don't give up, don't even give up.":sofunny:

I think when we have football players who are worrying themselves over whether or not their TAPE matches, then we have a problem. This is the NFL folks! Go out and play some football, CLOWN!

i figured there would be. so i googled "emmitt smithisms" = 2 results found and 1 was merely a suggestion to start a thread containing all his emmitisms.

so i look up "emmittism" = only 1 result found but it contained some gold-

Me Talk Funny

Former Dallas Cowboy Emmitt Smith is man of many talents. Runner, dancer, and, now that he's a TV talking head on ESPN, wordsmith. Some Emmittisms: "escape goat" (scape goat), "affordable porn opponent" (formidable opponent), "(Cowboys) are not that deep in depth", "arrow of invincibility" (aura of invincibility), and calling New England "the Paints". Asked to use two words to describe what would happen if Dallas turned over the ball six times, Smith said, "Cowboys lose big time." But in case anyone thought he'd forgotten his roots in Big D, Smith dashed off the sideline to whoop it up with his former teammates after they beat Buffalo on ESPN's Monday Night broadcast.

"arrow of invincibility" :toofunny:

im gonna have to start a thread of "emmittisms" that way when anyone googles, it will lead them here.

In all honesty....

I think CJ is a joke. His antics cause teams to rise up and beat the Bengals at times. He has also pulled some stupid stunts like that raffle.

However, to my knowledge, he shows up every day to play football. He busts his butt to play, and hasn't missed a game due to criminal behavior (yet). From the background he comes from, that DOES show some intestinal fortitude to be able to pull that off.

I really wonder what would happen if he ended up on a team like the Patriots, Colts, Steelers, Green Bay, etc. where discipline and self respect are not just taught, but demanded from the players.

He would probably end up punching a coach like he did last season. In a city like ours, it wouldn't fly. Cincinnati can keep him. He fits in with that organization.

This is true, Chad Johnson shows up to play every week. He prepares hard at practice, in the gym, and gives it all in games. He is my favorite receiver in the league. But what is my say on this, I have what, 10 posts?

Speaking of Emmitt and his stellar command of the English language, here's braniac Channing Crowder, another proud product of the superior institution of higher learning that is the University of Florida:

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/palmbeach/miamidolphins/entries/2007/10/24/crowder_discovers_he_wont_need.html?cxntfid=blogs_ inside_the_dolphins

Maybe he was joking, but gregarious Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder confessed today he didn’t know until Tuesday that people spoke English in London.

Crowder, a former Florida Gator and Atlanta native, apparently isn’t sure where the plane is headed when it takes off this afternoon for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants in Wembley Stadium.

“I couldn’t find London on a map if they didn’t have the names of the countries,” Crowder said. “I swear to God. I don’t know what nothing is. I know Italy looks like a boot. I learned that.

Go Gators!

This discussion of Chad reminds me of the long standing debate, which came first the chicken or the egg??

IOW, Is Chad the reason the bunglers suck or is Marvin Lewis the culprit with Chad's antics the by product of the fact that Marv has no control over the team??

uhh...Chad Johnson is HILARIOUS! Doesn't hurt that he's also one of the most talented recievers in the league too. Just imagine how much crappier the Bengals offense would be without him, or how much more improved ours would be with him?

The reality is, he's a playmaker. I don't care if he talks crap. He backs it up.

Yuck. We would win one extra game with him because of his talent and lose 6 others because of his selfishness, ability to distract teammates, showboating and locker room antics all which would destroy the team unity and dynamic which all true winning teams thrive and depend on.

And I find Chad Johnson hilarious, too, in the same way I find stupid people making fools of themselves hilarious. If I ever find myself not laughing at him and laughing with him, I'll be convinced that I'm Charlie from "Flowers for Algernon" and the experimental treatment wore off and I've become retarded again. And, since I've never been retarded, I'm pretty sure that eliminates me from actually ever laughing with him, unless HE starts taking the experimental treatment from the book, which is even more unlikely since it was a work of fiction.

It's also HILARIOUS when he punches a coach, let me tell ya. Real team player right there. Yeah, I'd love to have him. Give the Bengals Parker and Polamalu (since they both suck now) and we can get Chad. Maybe him and Tomlin can exchange post game blows after a loss? :coffee:

Actually... wasn't that the game where we shut em down so bad he decided to do that? :sofunny:

Honestly, again I wonder what would happen if he was on a team that put the smack down on him the first time he tried to act up?

I think that we have had a few chad type players on our team, but the pride of being a Steeler and the discipline instilled by the team were controlling factors on someone like Porter. Santo seemed to be going down that the year before last as well. yeah, I really wonder what would happen if CJ went to a team that would smack him down.

Do I want him? no. Cause I wouldn't want the risk!
