Matchup of the game

By Mike Prisuta
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, October 16, 2005

Jaguars offensive tackle Khalif Barnes vs. Steelers defensive end Kimo von Oelhoffen
Khalif Barnes, 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, has gone from the second round of the NFL Draft to the first option for the Jaguars at left offensive tackle. Barnes made his first NFL start last Sunday night and the improvement up front was dramatic.

With Mike Pearson starting at left tackle, the Jaguars rushed for 12 yards and allowed two sacks in a 20-7 loss against Denver on October 2. With Barnes replacing Pearson last Sunday night against Cincinnati, quarterback Byron Leftwich wasn't sacked and running back Fred Taylor broke free for his first 100-yard game of the season (132 rushing yards) in a 23-20 victory.

Such a profound upswing can't be attributed entirely to Barnes' presence in the lineup, but nor should it be viewed as a coincidence. Barnes arrived from the University of Washington purportedly possessing all the skills he needed to succeed in the NFL short of toughness (much the way Max Starks came to the Steelers from the University of Florida). He ought to play tougher today than he did a week ago based on a confidence level that has to be soaring.

Veteran Kimo von Oelhoffen (6-foot-4, 299 pounds), along with fellow defensive end Aaron Smith, has been an integral but underrated part of the Steelers' run-stuffing success. In any 3-4 defense, reliable end play is essential to containing a running game, and the Steelers contained San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson to the tune of 62 yards on 18 carries (a 3.4 average; Tomlinson had gone over 100 yards in each of his two previous games, pushing 200 on Sept. 25) in Monday night's 24-22 victory.

When it comes time to rush the passer it'll be fill-in right outside linebacker James Harrison trying to make Barnes' life miserable. Harrison took over for Clark Haggans (groin) against the Chargers and made his fifth NFL start memorable not because of his ability to rush the passer but for an acrobatic, one-handed interception and a 25-yard return that included hurdling Tomlinson.

Despite limited playing time on defense, Harrison ranks tied for third among Steelers with two sacks and first with three tackles for a loss.

The Matchup: The Steelers have already encountered one rookie left tackle this season, but weren't able to exploit the situation. New England lost left offensive tackle Matt Light early in what became a 23-20 victory over the Steelers on Sept. 25. Rookie Nick Kaczur replaced Light and lined up next to rookie left guard Logan Mankins. The Steelers didn't alter their defensive approach, and didn't do enough to prevent Tom Brady from completing 31 of 41 passes for 372 yards. They'll have to either scheme better or win more one-on-one battles against Barnes. EDGE: STEELERS

Last week: Strong safety Troy Polamalu didn't cover San Diego tight end Antonio Gates exclusively, but Polamalu covered Gates often and helped limit Gates to five catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. Better still, the Chargers and Tomlinson didn't run wild even though Polamalu was paying so much attention to Gates. Neither Tomlinson or Gates was able to beat the Steelers single-handedly, and in the end the Chargers came up short. EDGE: STEELERS

Jaguars at Steelers

When: 1 p.m. Sunday at Heinz Field.

Records: Jaguars (3-2); Steelers (3-1).

The skinny: The Steelers, historically, have had problems with Jacksonville, losing three of the first five meetings in history and six of the first 10. But they have won the past three meetings with their old division rival, only one of which was at Heinz Field. The Steelers could be without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who is 16-1 as a regular-season starter. That means the offense will be turned over to Tommy Maddox or Charlie Batch, who hasn't started a game since Dec. 2, 2001, when he was in Detroit. The Steelers have won 11 of their past 12 at home.

Prediction: Steelers, 20-12

things to look for today:

tommy to be jacked up and nervous. i think he will play like hes under pressure and make a early mistake

he rebounds from his mistake with steady running game and good chemistry with c. wilson

heath get involved early especially if running game gets stuffed

jags try an arial assault, m. jones gets alot of balls as they try to maximize his height. they should be eager to show off the te/wr that had many steelers mouths watering on draft day.

steelers24-16

BlitzburghRockCity

this game could be won thru the air... jags dont have fred taylor and the 2 interior lineman for the jags are tough against the run. If we can run the ball, we'll win it, but we may need to air it out too!

Steelers 24 Jags 14

Neither the pass or the run appear to be working just now - will Cowher try to grind it out on the ground or will he let Maddox throw a few deep ones to spread the D out?

Koopa
10-16-2005, 02:35 PM
i say maddox throws nine more ints in the third quater and then batch comes in and wins us the game. the running game ain't workin cause of worthless maddox, no point in focusing on the pass when maddox is worthless.

Livinginthe past
10-16-2005, 02:37 PM
Hmm everyone knows that the Steelers are a running team - they havent had a QB as good as Ben for a few years now - yet they still established a tough running game.

Im surprised that Leftwich isnt going after your secondary a little more - is he getting alot of presure from blitzes and the like?

Rotorhead
10-16-2005, 02:37 PM
I hope we start back up with the running game, only let it be Parker. I think Parker for a couple reasons, rest Bettis and Parker has a better chance to break a long one. I think if Maddox doesnt increase his completion percentage (not counting passes to the other team haha) we pull him for Batch, something to spark a fire. But I imagine that we will continue to do the same thing we are doing now, hopefully we can get a turnover and good field position for another score. It will probably be a D game from here on out.

Livinginthe past

That was a horribly typical Cowher play call - punting at the opposition 34 when you are trailing by 3. Boom goes the punt and the end result is a 14 yard gain - ugh horrible horrible horrible.

Both teams look like they are trying to find new ways to stall their own drives...

Maddox is the worst QB Ever. I cant believe how somebody can make such bad decisions. I think I can sum up this game like this...

Jax tried hard to lose this game but we tried harder!

Koopa
10-16-2005, 04:31 PM
no.....we didn't try harder to lose, MADDOX tried harder to lose, everyone was playing hard but maddox is a bum and is a fluke qb from a couple of years ago. now everyone that said we would've gone 15 and 1 with maddox y'all can now stfu with that shit cause this is the real maddox, it's not cause he hasn't played in a long time this is the real maddox

OK. Here's my 2 cents from a diehard Pittsburgh Steeler fan..I'm a 300 pound offensive lineman in high school, and I'm pretty sure I can do a better job at QB then Maddox did today. As far as I'm concerned, Maddox should just hang himself.

i think maddox put his own ambitions above the welfare of the team. batch wouldve been a better HEALTHY start. he looked like a sloth and had no zip on his passes whatsoever.

Never once did I say I was happy with Tommy starting this week, but I never thought he'd throw the game like this! I expected a pick at least, but 3, and there were 3 more that the Jax Defense should have had. I mean, come on. Trade him for a 4-5 round pick, please? Hopefully we can get even that. Like I've said, there are Steelers, and then there are people who play for the Steelers. Maddox, like Plaxico, is one of the latter.

I was talking to prosdo about this too alittle bit ago.. why in the hell would start a guy who isnt healthy when you have a healthy guy right there, ready to go !

The playing time Tommy has had since he lost the starting job, he has not produced at all..he's not seeing the field, he's missing underneath LB's and DB's..its just ridiculous!

his game in buffalo last year was horrible. steelers won despite his play. i posted earlier this week why we shouldnt worry with batch starting (mobility, health, and fire inside). i knew maddox would struggle but a fumble when all they had to do was kick a fg? then looking worse than odonnell in a sb???? unbelievable. oh well, i guess 14-2 isnt all that bad.

BlitzburghRockCity
10-16-2005, 05:20 PM
right on, that's the main thing I was talking about, that buffalo game and also the giants game when ben got hurt.. its terrible. I was really pulling for batch to get in there...even in preseason Tommy didnt show anybody anything, and batch played well.

Im so pissed off right now at cowher for not yanking him its not funny..

Koopa
10-16-2005, 05:27 PM
i'm actually not all that pissed with this game, cause this is what i was expecting maddox to do, he freakin sucks, and cowher sucks he chokes in clutch times of games with his play calling and keeping maddox in there was stupid, we should've put bettis in to pound the ball a little in ot and then kick the field goal cause we was in reeds range. damn you cowher and damn you maddox for still being alive. hopefully ben will be able to go next sunday cause if not maddox will throw 9 ints and the bengal hoes will be on here gloating like a mother f......

BlitzburghRockCity
10-16-2005, 05:35 PM
I expected him to struggle, but I also expected him to play w/ in the team and use his supporting cast. Not throw the ball away, take sacks, fumble, throw picks all day and basically take 2 steps back everytime we take 1 forward!!

What was I thinking !! :chair:

Okay I have a few gripes about this game. 1. Why did Cowher leave Maddox in there so long? It was quite obvisious by the first quarter that he wasn't going to do anything. Why not start Batch in the second half? 2. Quincy Morgan's 74 yard return put us at Jacksonville's 26 yard line. Why not just kick it there. Jeff is solid from there.

i think he left him in cause he knew he was gonna throw the game winning touchdown....to bad it was for the wrong team. i think he didn't start batch cause he doesn't like winning games all the time. he didn't go for teh field goal right away cause he wanted maddox to fumble and then throw the game winning touchdown. damn you cowher you suck in the clutch

Was wind a factor?

You hate to sit here and say ?a lot,? but a lot. If you ask Byron or the kickers, it was such an inconsistent wind at different levels. If you threw it up into the air it did one thing or if you threw it down on the ground it would do another thing. I?ve played here a long time and with the Giants at the Meadowlands, but it was the worst day of throwing into something that I?ve ever had.

The above is a quote from Steelers.com, Maddox quote after the game. What a joke. A short story for you that didn't know Ben before last year. Two or three years ago (not sure getting old) Big Ben was a college qb playing at Marshall during a awesome rain storm with high winds. He threw laser passes that night. Maddox gets a light breeze and tries to blame that for his performance.

BlitzburghRockCity
10-17-2005, 12:01 AM
After watching Pittsburgh sports tonite.. its apparent that Cowher was waiting for Tommy to "get hot" real quick, like he has in the past...a guy that has thrown 2 picks already, fumbled, taken sacks, and over/under thrown almost every play is not going to "get hot" anytime soon !!

Hmmm...I think we need to ask Maddox if that is why he made terrible decisions to throw it with 2,3, or 4 defenders around his intended receiver. Sure maybe the wind wasn't great, but I don't think that caused him to fumble and chase the ball instead of dropping right on top of it.

10-17-2005, 02:13 AM
If Maddox can't put more pepper on the ball to get it through the wind, then we shouldn't have sent St. Pierre away considering the Dec. game last year.
