Troy Smith has been decent so far, but he's bound to make some mistakes eventually. We need a couple of picks to get back in this. Not that we are out of it by any means. D has to get a pulse though.

As long as this team doesn't get a pass rush, we can make any QB look good. The one point I disagree with Tomlin on is that he does not stress sacks. Completely disagree with him on that point.

How do they recover their own Fumbles?

They got a better return out of their fumble too. :dang:

Farrior is the leader of the defense and Foote still makes great plays.

Sloppy game by the backups, but it means jack shit even if we win. San Diego is winning.

The Defense...What can I say? It's plummeted to the depths of mediocre. Even last week they couldn't stop the Rams. I never thought the D, after playing so well earlier this year would shit the bed like this. They were beginning to reel by the Jets game, the bottom fell out in New England. Now it's approached 2002 status in pourous-ity. Teams can beat this Defense on the ground and through the air. Those are words I'd never thought I'd say.

This team is one and out in the playoffs.

My assessment is clear. Farrior was named the captain of the defense for a reason and made plays all year long. Go look at other game day threads and read about Foote and how we all praised him this year because of how good he looked. Harrison stepped up this year and kept the fire alive with the LB's.
My only exception is Haggans who has played ok, and led the team in tackles last year, but age has caught up to him and Woodley starting next year seems smart.

A start is Woodley and Timmons for Haggans & Foote next year (I still think Farrior has some game left in him)

Farrior has had a pretty good year. Foote hasn't had a horrible one either... The thing that makes our middle backers look worse this year is that we are not cross-blitzing them nearly as much as we have in the past. Sometimes instead of looking at the players we need to look at the system the players are in... Conception is that they are not having a good year because of the lack of sacks pretty much by a lot of fans... Not many sacks doesn't mean they are playing bad. Our entire defense is in a transition periode... I think we need to start getting used to MLBs that don't necessarily make a lot of big plays, just solid ones.

IKE WHY CAN"T HE CATCH!!!!!!!
He could have 5-6 picks this year if he had hands and not rocks for hands!

That is why he is a DB. He played tailback in college (See avatar) but couldn't catch passes out of the backfield... He can stay with almost anybody so they tried him at corner and he covers the crap out of people. Even though he doesn't get the picks, he stops the ball a ton which is a good play in and of itself.

tony hipchest
12-30-2007, 05:54 PM
so anyways we are down by 2 td's.

if we get a stop on the 1st drive, i think we can still pull this game out rather easilly. i think the battle of attrition will favor the steelers back ups in this game. we can easilly put up 20 on this ravens team and hold them to 7 in the 2nd half.

they will not continue to recover the ball every single time they put it on the turf.

chargers may see the score of this game and come out even more flat against the raiders in the 2nd half (rob ryan may be coaching for a job).

I don't think they are capable of that any longer. I really don't. This defense is toast in the playoffs.

The 2004 team with nothing to play for came out and played a Buffalo team hard in the last game of the season. This team hasn't shown up today. The defense is looking worse and worse every single week and they are giving a command performance of ineptitude today.

I agree. Even though Jacksonville lost today, they still managed to click a little bit. This Defense will get clobbered by Taylor and Jones-Drew again next week. I seriously believe that. I have lost all confidence in this Defense. Even in 2005, with that bad streak, there was some accountability and leadership on that team. They turned it up when it mattered.

These guys are getting pushed around, and they can't tackle. Not even the 2002 team, with that horrible secondary, didn't get blasted on the ground.

If as looks likely we go out in the first rd v the Jags I don't think we can complain - it's about the right level for our season. We don't look like a SB or Championship team.

Obviously its frustrating that our performance has not matched the potential we are capable of often enough, but the big question is are we are a team ready to make a step up next year or will we be on the slide?

Tomlin has done a respectable job in his first year but needs more experience - and needs to sharpen up our depth chart by discarding some of the passengers. Not sure we can make enough personnel changes in one offseason to fix all the problem areas.

does tomlin continue with this rediculous experiment to see what we have in a running game? (absolutely nothing)

or do we actually try to win the game the only way possible? (throwing it)

i say tomlin grinds out the clock and tries to get out of there asap.

Let's just get something good offensively so we can take something good out of this.

7 first downs and 103 yards total offense so far:dang:

Are Nantz and Simms done talking about the greatness of the Cheatriots yet?

Thank god i get to listen to Billy, Tunch and Wolf. I should not take it for granted

This game is just rediculous. There is no reason our defense should be giving up plays like this! I'm so sick of the D this season. If we want to have any hopes of going anywhere in the playoffs, we better get our acts together!

If that is the case, I wish they would have just ran off tackle runs all game long...bleed the clock and just get out of there.

we dont run those slants enough.. look at the threat holmes is when he catches a 5 yard pass. for as bad as our line is, we really need to incorporate that into our offense more. im sure ben is capable of throwing a 5 yard slant pattern.
