Steelers' Polamalu to practice Friday
By Kevin Gorman
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, January 3, 2008

Troy Polamalu did not practice this afternoon, but Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said the Pro Bowl strong safety will practice tomorrow in preparation for Saturday?s AFC Wild Card game against Jacksonville at Heinz Field.

Polamalu missed the season finale at Baltimore with a knee injury, the fifth game he has missed this season. Tyrone Carter started in his place last week.

?Tomorrow is going to be a big day for him,? Tomlin said of Polamalu. ?Today was a big day for him. It didn?t necessarily show itself on the practice field, but a big rehab day. He took some steps. Tomorrow, he?ll be ready to give it a shot and we?ll see where he is.?

Tomlin said it was a ?collective? decision, and discounted any possibility that Polamalu will not practice.

?He will not try ? he will do tomorrow in practice,? Tomlin said. ?I?ll watch him closely tomorrow.?

I bet he would sit if this was a regular season game - I guess they drain/shoot up his knee and hope it holds together.

Just another bad sign in a month of bad news

Just another bad sign in a month of bad newstotally agree. tomlin seems to take absolutely no chances. frankly im not sure if the playoff/ vs regular season game will influence tomlin either way, when he goes by what he sees tomorrow.

i wouldnt be shocked if we hear troy will sit. i agree that troy should play though. thsi is the playoffs and i hope tomlin treats it as potentially the last game of the season.

all hands on deck.

All hands on deck as long as it doesn't effect the long term career of the player. I have a feeling Troy will play. Even if he isn't 100% healthy, I don't see him missing a home playoff game.

I'm just happy to come home from work, log on, and find out we have no more players on IR today............................................

But the question is at what point is an injured Troy less effective than Anthony Smith, who at least so far has only appeared to be impaired mentally rather than physically.

For those who recall Troy's play in the Ravens massacre at Heinz last Christmas Eve, Troy can hurt the team as well as himself if his knee is hurting but he still goes out there.

Troy is the key to success on the defense and our x-factor and if he does not play we might as well pack up and leave early! :tt02:

And based on the dash to the exits when the Jags went ahead 22-7 in the third quarter several weeks ago that no doubt will occur:smile:

I think Troy has played himself out of postion quite often this season and has not really the beent the force he should be.

Maybe he will start playing with instinct instead of racing to nowhere which has happened often this year

Consider the possibility that "playing with instinct" rather than staying in his lanes may be why he is racing to nowhere?

He really needs to step it up. He is without a doubt the most overpaid, underperforming player on the team.

Are the injurys the reason for the head down, diving at ankles, no wrap tackling we have seen by Troy and practically every other defender this year? He is getting the bucks, He is the Pro Bowler. Lace it up, Troy,TIme to perform!

if we didnt have troy in the last jags game, we would have lost by at least 20.

In my 3 months NFL and Steeler career I`ve noticed that time and again Troy tackles head first and tries to knock his opponents feet from under him...it looks a really dangerous manoeuvre,I`m thinking neck and spinal injury everytime he does it!
Has this always been Troy`s way of tackling?

yes, he has always tackled pretty much like that. he has also had some concussion issues too.. but im not sure how many, even though one is already too many. also, he's a pretty small guy when you see him in person. its really hard to imagine a guy troy's size trying a textbook tackle on a running back or a 6'4" receiver.

sorry to venture off topic here.. but what made you become a steelers fan? it seems like this year all the newer fans of the nfl have jumped on the patriots fan base (until they start losing of course).... but what made you choose the good guys over a team like that? anyways, welcome aboard. nice to have some international support. :tt02:

I think we would have seen a different troy if injuries hadn't nagged him all year.He is a player from heart and has played with alot of injuries and once healty look out.

Did you ever try to wrap tackle recovering from a knee injury and torn rib cartilage within a span of a couple of weeks?

I broke 3 ribs over 18 months ago and if I move the wrong way, it still hurts like hell.

I'm not going to get on Troy's sh it because he had an un-Troy-like season due largely in part to injuries. A healthy Troy is money in the bank.

I think that Kendrell Bell is the one wearing Troy's uniform in 2006 and 2007. After all, no-one can confirm that Kendrell has actually been on the Kansas City sideline the past 2 years and since Troy has been hurt for 2 straight seasons....it leads me to believe that ol' # 97...bitter that he didn't get a Super Bowl ring... has kidnapped the real Troy, purchased a long wig, and has been trying to impersonate Troy.

Kendrell...the joke is over. Bring Troy back! We need him. All the injuries have exposed who you really are.

Polamalu practices, expected to play Saturday
Friday, January 04, 2008
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu practiced today for the first time in more than two weeks and is expected to play in the AFC wild-card playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Polamalu, who missed four of the final six regular-season games with a sprained knee, is listed as questionable on the team's official injury report. Return specialist Allen Rossum (hamstring) is also listed as questionable.

"He looked good enough today to be a game-time decision," Coach Mike Tomlin said of Polamalu. "I know he feels well, but we'll see. If he does play, there will be no excuses. The standard of expectation won't change. If he's going, he's going."

At least Troy is trying to gut it out...he could be pulling a Duce here and just stand on the sidelines turning into a gut.

Atta boy Troy get your butt out on the field.

How about giving us an interception just to boot and take it to the house. Lets bring back the big play to our "D" again Saturday !

No kidding, how about some defensive greatness again. A pick 6 would be nice, a fumble taken to the house would be fantastic.

Offense wins games
Defense wins Championships.

Its time the Steelers DROP THE CURTAIN!!!

IMO Troy will start but this is not exactly an ironclad guarantee by Tomlin he will start (let alone finish)

"He looked good enough today to be a game-time decision," Coach Mike Tomlin said of Polamalu. "I know he feels well, but we'll see. If he does play, there will be no excuses.

I assume the variable is whether the knee swells up after practicing today - my concern is a player drags himself out there and is chronically hurt after that - Kendrell Bell hurt his ankle in 2002 preseason and was out off and on all regular season, played lights out brilliantly in the Cleveland playoff game until the painkillers wore off, could not go the next week in Tennessee, and that was about it as far as productive Pro Bowl level play by Bell for the Steelers.

I know there is no guarantee when you get back to the playoffs, but the Steelers have a boatload of cap $$$ tied up in Troy and risk a real long term problem if the knee is blown out.

I am sure he plays... but I am a little worried that he will miss something at a crucial time because of injury.... can't hit right at the right time... or maybe he can't get the arm up for the INT that we absolutely need...

Then again, maybe he will an absolutely lights out game!
