I`m new to the NFL and it`s come as something of a shock to discover just how long the off-season is.....over 8 months.....8 MONTHS!!!!!
What on earth do you guys do to help yourselves through this period?
Me?....i`m going to buy this years NFL Record and Fact Book and try to learn as much about this great game as I can.
I can`t think of any other sport with such a long off-season...8 months!!!!!:dang::dang:
What do the players do during this time?

Baseball from April until Steelers training camp.

the reason the offseason is so long is cause football is a contact sport. the players need time to rest their bodies and be in top physical condition to start the new season.

during the offseason they take some time to rest and take some time to train their bodies and get even better next year

I personally keep myself busy with the NBA( Knicks all the way! lol). and you can always watch other Pittsburgh teams like the penguins in the NHL, and the Pirates in MLB( when the season begins). and you can always come to this board and have some fun with fellow fans.

good luck dude

the NFL season never really ends....with free agency, the draft, training, preseason, regualr season, and playoffs. I personally love this time of year because I'm a certifiable "draftnik"...and love checking up on college players and trying to figure how who we may take in the April draft.

I will send you a list of good mock draft sites....they will tell you where they are "predicting" players may go...and also usually give pretty good insight into the players themselves .

sherlock - the next big thing in the offseason is to talk about the NFL draft and who we should get.

If you want to learn more about the history of the game. You can start with the Steelers, the have a few dvd's out on the history of the team that are excellent

You`re right Lord Stiller...that I intend to do!!
Everything is all rather daunting at the moment, but one thing I do know is that I love the Steelers!
Saturdays game against the Jags was a truly great sporting event......even I knew it was something special.
I watched it live on TV here even though I had a 12 hour shift that same day,and all that day I had that horrible feeling in my stomach...but you have to experiece the lows to appreciate the highs, right!

Get involved with another American sport such as Baseball or Basketball. The Baseball season lasts from April until October so, you'll have this pasttime take you right into Football season.

That's really cool that you're trying to learn more about Football. Are you a soccer fan at all?? Just curious, since soccer is so big in England.

Hi CB1977!
Yes I use to live and breathe soccer...not so much nowadays though!
Have Browns fans taken an interest in soccer following Randy Lerner`s ownership of Aston Villa?
He seems like a decent chap and Villa are a great cub with an illustrious past.

Hi sherlock!

I'm not sure about what other Browns fans feel about soccer but I like watching it during the World Championships...It's pretty intense! My daughters high school has a soccer team and, although they're not good, they play their hearts out and it's fun to watch!

Nice comments about Randy Lerner, thanks! I've met him once and he is a very nice guy!!!

BTW, congrats to your Steelers for maiking it to the playoffs. We all have so much to look forward to to next year...it's going to be quite interesting! The rivalry is back!!

That`s just like the England national team.......except they don`t play their hearts out and they aren`t fun to watch! :toofunny:
It`s a shame that soccer is a minority sport in the U.S. because you have some real good players.Since the Beckham/Galaxy adventure,TV over here has been showing a lot of Major League games and I have to say I`ve been surprised by the high standard.
Also, the U.S. national team have come on no-end and can give any other national team a run for their money.....it`s a shame that NFL hasn`t really caught on in other parts of the world.
NFL .....a world game....now that would be something!

It`s not a question of being bored, more that it`s frustrating that just as I`m beginning to get a VERY rudimentary understanding of the NFL,it`s going to be all over in about 3 weeks!

Lol - Watch other sports. Hockey, baseball, some NBA... Of course, there is always a soccer league going on somewhere (I?m sure your aware of that)...

The off-season for people who are really into the league and have been watching for a long time is actually very exciting... Free agency periods and the draft are two of my favorite NFL events to be honest.

As far as your question as to what the players do, they go to a warm place like Florida, Arizona or California and work out for the majority of the off-season. Most of them (From what I understand) stay home for about three weeks or a month and do nothing and then just train everyday until camp.

That`s interesting steelersfanman92,in the UK the best sports coverage is on Sky which is a subscription based channel. My Dad gets all the sports channels(which is how I get to see the NFL) for around ?34 a month and it`s actually very good value considering what they offer...IMO.
How is sports broadcasting done in the States?...Is it mainly free or subscription based?

I forgot to mention, If during the off season you are in need of some football action you could tune into the AFL( Arena Football League). it's football played indoors but it's not as physical and exciting as the NFL, but it's something. I usually watch a half at least of a game each week during the offseason. It starts around March of April I believe.

I do not know if it's broadcast in the UK, but you could check it out. just don't expect something really cool though, it's just a way to get through the offseason and have a dose of football :helmet:
