Well seems like it was bound to happen after all the speculation the past two seasons.

Citing a league source, Profootballtalk.com reports Colts coach Tony Dungy will step down and be replaced by assistant head coach Jim Caldwell.

Dungy isn't expected to make his decision official before next Monday, but most close to the situation have expected him to retire. Caldwell is highly regarded in the Colts' locker room, especially by Peyton Manning.

Good move if true. Caldwell was going to get a HC gig this season. At least Indy keeps him home and he'll probably bring back most of the staff.

Wonder if Cowher might change his mind about coming back.

Dungy was a good guy and a great influence on the NFL, sad to see him go.

I'm so sorry to see Tony go, but he made his mark in Indy and the entire NFL - great coach and a total class act (of course - he once wore the black & gold!). Good luck Tony - we're gonna miss you!

Cowher isn't going anywhere and especially not to Indy. That is even farther away from his new home than Pittsburgh was and wifey-poo would jack him up if he even considered it. :pin: Kaye wears the pants in that family, not The Chin. :wink02:

Wonder if Cowher might change his mind about coming back.

If anything, this will reassure him that he made the right decision. I honestly don't look for Cowher to be back anytime soon, if ever.

Good for Dungy deciding it is time to go on his terms - i am glad Tony had success against the Pats last year & got a ring to go with his 78 Steelers ring - sometimes the good guys do win one

False reports?

Dungy denies report he's decided to step down

Tony Dungy denies he's already decided to step down as head coach of the Colts.

"Believe it or not, I'm going to go through the process just like I said I would," Dungy told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Profootballtalk.com reported Wednesday afternoon that Dungy will opt to retire and will be replaced by Jim Caldwell. Still, it won't be a surprise if on Monday, the report holds true. If he did step down, he did it in a very similar fashion to Cowhere, finally getting the ring, going one more year than hanging it up.

Then why did Jim Caldwell withdraw his name from the Falcons job?

Interesting....

Report: Colts' Dungy will return next season

Posted: January 21, 2008
Sporting News staff report

Tony Dungy will return to coach the Colts in 2008, according to a report on NFL.com. The Colts have called a news conference for 4:30 p.m. ET today.

Dungy, 52, became the first African-American head coach to win a Super Bowl last season. In September 2005, he signed a contract extension intended to keep him in Indianapolis through 2009, though this is the third straight year in which Dungy has contemplated retirement.

Dungy is 127-65 in 12 seasons as an NFL head coach with the Colts and Buccaneers. Dungy has said in the past he does not want to be an NFL "lifer" and that he originally intended to retire before age 50.

I heard earlier today that Tony was going to stay with the Colts as indicated by Dom's article above. I was leery about his rumored retirement and wanted to hear it from a credible source. Thanks Dom!

Yeah and if this is his last year, he can help Caldwell make the transition into being the top dog.

First thing you have to do is have a sock puppet of a dog on your hand.
