New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who interviewed for the Redskins' head coaching job the past three days, has decided to stay in New York.

Spagnuolo was not offered the Redskins job but his agent Bob Lamont said "it didn't matter because his heart is in New York City ... The Redskins were great ... it was a great interview."

The Giants are also giving Spagnuolo a new three-year deal in excess of $2 million per year, which would make Spagnuolo the NFL's highest-paid defensive coordinator.

With Spagnuolo out of the running, Jim Fassel emerges as the Redskins' leading candidate.

Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.

I'm a bit surprised... I'm thinking Spag is looking to repeat next season. Why not stay with a winner for now? HC jobs will be there for him in the future.

I think he's next in line for when Tom Coughlin steps down, which will probally be after next year or the year after. Kind of like the situation in Dallas with their offensive coordinator.
