I know I have mentioned this before in other forrums, but I think that something really needs to be done soon. DT Casey Hampton will be 31 before the season starts and the only true back up we have is Chris Hoke and he will be 32 in April. The Steelers must start thinking about this position and it wouldnt suprise me if they address it early in the upcoming draft in April. What do you all think and who might the Steelers consider in the upcoming draft or free agent period?

Agreed but we can't neglect the position like we did with the o-line.

A bigger concern right now on the defensive line is finding a Defensive End to upgrade over Keisel or to backup/replace Aaron Smith who is older than Hampton and Hoke

are steelerfans the only fanbase who automatically think any player over 30 years old is over the hill? agism seems rampant.

we have alot of $$$ tied up in our NT's (as we should being that its such an integral position in our 3-4).

if people like sam adams and keith traylor can still find work, im not too worried about our guys and their age.

30 is the new 20. :chuckle:

In the case of DT, I agree.

I am in no means an expert in "the aging body," but let me take an uneducated stab at this.

There is no doubt that there is a lot of roughing up going on in the trenches, but what is there about Casey Hampton that wouldn't suggest he can go almost another decade.

Casey is a clogger, through and through. Age is going to decrease speed, maybe stamina, but its probably not going to erode his massive frame. 325 pounds is just as hard to hold at bay whether that weight is 31 or 41 years old.

As long as Hampton is strong enough to battle through the center, he's going to be an asset. A man like Sam Adams, though larger, is a tribute to that.

Its not like his game his based on speed. Which is a reason why guys like Simeon Rice and other DEs begin to fall off the deep end at 34.

I'm not going to be the one to tell Big Snack the game has passed him by... and I pity the guy who has to.

Casey is also still one of the strongest men and NT in the NFL. There are definatley bigger Nose tackles but not many who are stronger.
At the pro bowl lifting competition for stregnth Big snack usually does quite well...

why should we worry, according to many people casey sucks cause he has no stats :coffee:

but I agree with Crush, big snack's game is not based on his speed, so as long as he stays healthy he'll last for a some time, like pat williams

I do believe we need depth at DT, although ryan mcbean may be that guy, and if his not then at least a late pick in the draft should be used, someone like dre moore

We need to upgrade the depth on the defensive line. Maybe one of those guys can spell Casey as times during the game to keep him fresh. We may not even need another 3-4 NT if Tomlin goes to the 4-3 in a few years...

Its nice to know that we as Steelers fans all have different views on pretty much all interests isnt it? I really think though that the Steelers must draft a DT to groom behind the best NT in the biz right now in Hampton. I emailed Ed at the Post Gazzette this morning about this same subject and he seems to think that the Steelers should take atleast 1 maybe 2 is his exact words.

I say no for now. Both Big Snack and Chris Hoke still get it done at a high level. If one shows up late in the draft with a good upside that can be brought along the way we have done for years, then grab him.

Just get anyone from the Giants and we'll be set.

I say fix the offensive woes this year then worry about that next year.

Antwon Balmer from UNC would be a nice fit at our DE spot across from Aaron Smith and Keisel would give him time to learn the position without having to just be thrown into the dogs.

we're set but adding a kendall langford or kentwan balmer would be a nice luxury

I love the way Balmer plays the game and he is gonna be a great pro I think. I would be very suprised if Langfor makes it to us in the 2nd... just dont see it happening. But I also dont really think that Langford is what we really need in our 3-4 either.

Exactly, Hampton also needs to play on certain 3rd down situations. Hoke played well in his absence.

matt mosley just said this in a chat at the combine .

in reference to chris long and if he or gholston is a better fit in miami.

"That said, Kevin Colbert of the Steelers was going crazy over Long yesterday. Saying he was a lot more versatile than what people are saying"

what if we traded up to get long for our 3-4? haha and gave away the farm, mike ditka style

depends on what we give up... he's a player who can definitely dominate a game...

hardworker, nonstop motor, great tackler, nose for the ball he has it all... seems like a steeler player to me...

If we trade up we better be getting Jake Long not Chris Long

I would say that might take a DT 6th or 7th round

Wrong.

Jake Long is overrated. He is not worth trading up that high to get. Chris Long isnt either, but much more than Jake Long. We can sit back and get a tackle almost as good as Jake Long in the late first round. Jeff Otah or Chris Willaims would be just as good as Jake Long in the long run IMO.

I have to disagree I think that Long will make an immediate impact for his team and be a force in the league for years to come. Also he only allowed two sacks in his whole career in Michigan. That is pretty impressive if you ask me.
