NFL donates Pats swag to impoverished children in Nicaragua

Associated Press

MANAGUA, Nicaragua -- The New England Patriots won the Super Bowl and ended the season with a perfect 19-0 record -- at least it looks that way in Nicaragua.

The NFL donated 290 Patriots hats and an equal number of team jerseys trumpeting the slogans "Super Bowl Champions, 19-0" to impoverished children from two small communities in southern Nicaragua.

Thursday's gifts could not change history -- the Patriots lost the Feb. 3 game to the New York Giants 17-14 -- but they made a lot of youngsters in the communities of San Gregorio and Buena Vista very happy, said Miriam Diaz, spokeswoman for the humanitarian organization World Vision, which arranged the donation with the NFL.

"They [Patriots] lost, but the children won," Diaz said.

The only "football" most of the children know is soccer, but they were very enthusiastic about the U.S. version of the game once the rules were explained to them, she said.

"They were very happy to receive the hats and jerseys," Diaz said. "They said they did not expect such a surprise."

Neither did the Patriots.

This sucks. How are they supposed to teach their children that cheaters never win? Even the great Bills dynasty never went 19-0.

I hope they tell the people getting the hats and shirts that they LOST the game. I don't want anybody in the world thinking the cheaters are champs.

Why pay the shipping to Nicaragua, theres plenty of under priviledged Latin American children right there in NE, not to mention every other major US city. If they're white t-shirts you could also get rid of them at the next Miami Heat game.

Gotta go now, I'm off to my second job so I can afford to pay my taxes.

The NFL wants it that way. If you give those to poor kids in America someone will buy them up and put them on ebay.

There aren't any tax dollars involved here. A private company takes care of it.

Good of Tom Brady to have joined in with the kids and not gone to the Pro-Bowl!

I recognise that smug look of satisfaction anywhere! :tt02:

Unfortunately no-one got the money shoot when just minutes later she kneed him a good one in the clackers!

Pennywise the Clown was, comparatively, a pretty decent guy compared to Tom Brady. I mean, what, Pennywise killed and ate kids? That's pretty bad, but, Hell, Tom Brady is evil incarnate...

Brady is just the puppet (If he could think for himself then that would be scarey!!). It's Bellicheat who controls the strings - He IS Satan!! Brady is just the pretender to the throne - hmm, guess that sums up the The Pats really!

Gee - aint Rodney Harrison just a swell guy? Here we all thought he was a dirty cheap-shot artist and he's donating his time to the underprivileged Nicaraguan kids. We should hang our heads in shame. :shake02:

I'm glad that the shirts are donated to people who truly need clothing.

Central America has, for years, been a dumping ground for unwanted used clothing from the United States, thanks to church giveaways, hurricane relief drives and other charitable and business endeavors. The legacy of that goodwill has turned Nicaragua's streets into a living, if slightly tattered, scrapbook of pop culture memories: everything from "Avoid the Noid" and "Party Animal, Spuds Mackenzie," to "I'm Too Sexy for My Shirt."

I had forgotten all about that little dude....

Those commercial were great back in the '80s. I remember one time I was very sick.. had a weird kind of flu. After about 4 days of sleeping 19 hours, i was able to prop up and watch TV for a little bit. This "Avoid the Noid" commercial came on and made me laugh so hard my lungs were burning.
