The 49′ers made a minor roster today, picking up just released kick returner Allen Rossum, who was let go by the Steelers on Saturday. Rossum was a late training camp addition for the Steelers, and was their primary kick returner last season, taking one back against the 49′ers for a touchdown in their week three contest at Heinz Field. Overall, Rossum took back 38 kicks for 885 yards for a 23.3 average. He also plays conerback, but really plays that role on a limited basis. Last season at corner he made just five tackles for the Steelers.

happy to see he found a team. He was just mediocre last season as a returner. I think the coaching staff will have something in mind when looking for a returner that can field a punt and get some return yards.

The answer is either in the draft or waiver wire.

He actually gave me some piece of mind. The only bone headed move I THOUGHT he made was when he went to grab the ball after one of the defenders had touched it. As it turns out, that was a smart move on Rossum's part due to a rule that many of us were not aware of. Until the Steelers show that they can fix the special teams, getting rid of him was not a good move IMO.

I would have rather kept him. He could field kicks and punts, something others couldn't do well before him.

the cut of rossum might mean they might draft someone like steve slaton or whoever else in the later rounds

Niners sign KR Rossum after unproductive season with Steelers

Saturday, March 1, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Kick returner Allen Rossum signed with the San Francisco 49ers on Friday, joining his fifth NFL team.

Rossum, a 10-year veteran who also plays cornerback, is second in NFL history with 13,269 career return yards and 10,520 kickoff return yards. He ranks first among active players with 2,749 career punt return yards, and has seven career touchdowns, all on kick returns.

Rossum was released by Pittsburgh on Tuesday after a fairly unproductive season with the Steelers, but he returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown against San Francisco in September. He's likely to handle kickoff and punt return duties with the 49ers, who probably won't re-sign punt returner Michael Lewis, a free agent.

Rossum made the Pro Bowl with Atlanta in 2004. He also has played for Philadelphia and Green Bay
