Steelers play host to two more free agents
Friday, March 14, 2008
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers continue to entertain free agents in an attempt to bolster their special teams and offensive line, bringing in former Carolina Panthers center Justin Hartwig and Tennessee Titans backup safety Donnie Nickey today to meet with the coaching staff.

Hartwig, who started 15 games last season for the Panthers, was released Tuesday as part of a shakeup of Carolina's offensive line. The Panthers signed Hartwig to a five-year, $17 million contract as a free agent two years ago.

Nickey, who grew up in Akron, Ohio and played at Ohio State, has been a backup in five seasons with the Titans. However, he is considered a special-teams standout who once angered quarterback Vince Young because he hit his teammates too hard in practice.

Oh boy, he might not fit in here. He might upset Hines Ward and a few fans like Anthony Smith did last season because of his aggressive nature in TC and practice.

Ok...it's time to either fish or cut bait with Starks with the cap space he is using up right now. If we can land these two guys, who can help us...let's do it.

I don't mind if they pick up a couple more FAs as long as they are not expensive and they cut some dead weight (Starks and Willie Reid who will never amount to anything) to keep us under the cap. I thought the Fox signing was very good because they got him cheap and KC fans said on their board they are sad to see him go.

Steelers check out 2 more free agents
Saturday, March 15, 2008
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Carolina Panthers thought center Justin Hartwig would help bolster their offensive line when they signed him to a five-year, $17 million contract as an unrestricted free agent two years ago.

But, after two seasons as a starter, Hartwig was released earlier this week as part of a shakeup on the Panthers' offensive line. Yesterday, he surfaced at the Steelers' South Side facility, meeting with the coaching staff as a possible solution to some of the problems on their offensive line.

Hartwig, 29, was joined on the South Side by free-agent safety Donnie Nickey, a backup for five seasons with the Tennessee Titans who is considered a special-teams standout. Nickey, an Akron, Ohio, native who played at Ohio State, once angered Titans quarterback Vince Young because he hit his teammates too hard in practice.

Hartwig and Nickey bring to eight the number of free agents who have visited the Steelers since the free-agency period began two weeks ago.

Two players -- running back Mewelde Moore and linebacker Keyaron Fox -- have been signed.

But, with the team unhappy with the performance of center Sean Mahan last season, Hartwig (6-4, 312) could be another. He was one of several starters released by the Panthers, along with running back DeShaun Foster, guard Mike Wahle and linebacker Dan Morgan, following a 7-9 season.

Meantime, coach Mike Tomlin, who is accustomed to standing before his team and delivering a speech, has been chosen to deliver the commencement address at his alma mater, the College of William & Mary, May 11.

He will also receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters at the commencement ceremony, along with Rabbi David Ellenson. Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor will also be in attendance and deliver welcoming remarks.

Tomlin, 35, was a wide receiver when he played at William & Mary, which is located in Williamsburg, Va.

He hasn't played well in the past, but maybe he'll do something good for Pittsburgh. (look through the article for a Center visiting Pittsburgh.)

If he ever went to the Pro Bowl, he went as a spectator. Did you really think I'd make a statement like that without doing my homework first? Here are all the centers who have gone to Hawaii since Hartwig was a 6th round pick in '02:

Nope. Not a pro-boler.

However, the guy IS a SOLID center. A GREAT upgrade over last year. That gives us flexibility in Mahan moving to his original position, or being a backup. That means we draft two OL this year in the first day, and we will be SOLID at the line, with depth.

I would be happy with that.

I think that some people may have thought hardwig was nick hardwick from SD when they had the pro bowl comment.

As far as Nickey goes... I don't understand how people don't see it as a problem that he started a fight with the francise QB. It worse than Anthony Smith. Some people liked Anthony Smith's aggressiveness in practice... really?

Instead of just letting that aggressiveness consume his game maybe he should have learned a little discipline. You know, start with not getting into extra curricular B.S. after the play and end at not getting cooked deep.

So maybe being willing to mix it up with their teammates in training camp is a quality some people look for in the position, but I'd rather (and I've said it before) not have a bull in a china shop at FS.

We should be passing on Nickey, as well.

Nickey, who primarily plays special teams and played at Ohio State, had knocked down receiver Joel Filani earlier when the rookie ran the wrong route, a post when the defense was defending against the post.

Trainers helped Filani to the side, then Nickey broke up the pass by taking receiver Courtney Roby to the ground on the very next play by putting his right arm around Roby’s neck in a chokehold move. Young, who had thrown the pass, erupted.

He yelled at Nickey and asked him what he was doing, telling him to quit that stuff. Young ran over as Roby stayed on the ground. Nickey put his right hand on Young’s chest before the quarterback shoved back and took a swing at the safety.

and.. AFTER the fact... Nickey says it would have been a "good" hit on Sunday... but also admits it wasn't a clean hit... So for Nickey... who only makes like 10 hits a season.. a good hit is a dirty hit?

Nickey, a three-year veteran, said he understands that would have been a great play on Sunday in a game but that he shouldn’t have done that to his own teammate. He apologized to Roby and realized it wasn’t a clean hit.

I agree, and I chalk it up to the same mentality that has some folks convinced that the Raiders would be getting off "cheap" by surrendering a 2nd round pick and a top 3 CB salary for an overrated headcase like DeAngelo Hall.

IMO, if the steelers sign hartwig they will probably go BPA the CB or DL position in the 1st round. hopefully if the go CB they don't pick talib.

the 2nd round they could grab pollak C/G.

Donnie Nickey actually grew up 12 miles down the road from me in Plain City, Ohio not Akron, Ohio as the article indicates. He attended Jonathon Alder High School and I've seen many of his high school games. He was a great high school athlete.

He's very fast for a white boy but fast is about all that you get out of him. His high school was division 5 when he attended which equates to a small school in Ohio.
Nickey has shied away from contact ever since he attended the Big 10 Division 1 school of Ohio State and has continued to shy away in the NFL.

Signing Nickey would be a waste if you ask me. The Steelers will get nothing, performance wise, out of him.

Good observations, Pit.

So this guy is a malcontent who runs away from the ball carrier...

Unless we plan on filming a recreation of Little Giants, I'd say that's a big no thank you to Nickey.
