View Full Version : Who will be the breakout Steeler(s) this year?

zulater

Among the young vets who will have the breakout season and either establish themselves as a legitimate star or take their game to the next level in 08?

To be different I'll go with Matt Spaeth. With a year in the league and Tuman out of the way I think he'll emerge as a nice weapon in the passing game. I'll predict he'll have 25+ catches.

That said the guy that needs to and will step up in a huge way will be Lamar Woodley. I think this guy will prove to be the best LOLB for the Steelers since Kevin Greene.

It would also be nice to see Timmons prove that he was worthy of a first round pick, though I have my doubts.

Lastly I see Santonio Holmes taking it to the next level this year. Consistency is the only thing lacking so far. I can see him having a breakout season in 08 and find himself in a pro bowl.

So who are the young veterans that you see emerging and taking their game to the next level?

I sure hope one of the young O-linemen is among that group? :hunch:

A guy I keep waiting for to emerge as a quality starter but just hasn't done it so far is Bryant McFadden. He teases you along, but just can't seem to cement a place in the starting lineup.

Anthony Smith. we'll finally get to see him do very nice hits in the secondary, and playing smart, staying in position, not biting on the play action.

my guess is woodley. i don't really see anyone else having a breakout year.

IMO, holmes will be an average(nothing bad and nothing special) starting WR again. hopefully the steelers don't go WR in the 1st round this year.

it would be great to see ryan mcbean surpass keisel on the depth chart.

Santo would be my first choice with Anthony Smith running a close second. I can see both of these young guys coming into their own and having standout seasons! :tt02:

Woodley is the obvious and good choice

Holmes could be a probowler IMO

Hopefully one of our rookies contributes. And hopefully one of our offensive linemen has a breakout year!

McFadden is in a contract year and looking for big money, he could have a great year. Also, Anthony Smith as mentioned

i dont know if i would go that far. yes he is a very good QB. and he does have the potential to be an elite qb, but to say he'll be the elite qb....i dont know about that. (and i am a big fan of bens, but there are better qbs than he is right now).

Heath Miller may never get to a Pro bowl because of stat ho's like KW III, and Antonio Gates. But imo he's already the best tight end in the game when you consider the overall package. Let me put it this way, Miller has great hands, is a monster after the catch, runs good patterns etc... In other words he can do anything the so called elite TE's can do already when asked to. But he can also block like an extra tackle, something the other guys can't even come close to. Just for fun I'd like to see the reaction if Romeo Crennell asked KW III to block Aaron Smith one time. :toofunny:

On offense: Santonio Holmes a lot of WR's breakout in their 3rd season.

On Defense: Woodley. He's got all the talent, he just needed the opportunity to play.

I'll stick with the secondary theme, but will throw my coins behind William Gay at corner, 2nd year man next season, out of Louisville, he should be able to step up in the nickle packages and make some big plays. The kid was a ball hawk in college and I'd like to see him on the field a little more in 08.

I don't think its really fair to pick a 1st round draft choice as your "break out guy". I mean, its not hard to say Timmons, Holmes, Miller or such, the key is to pick that guy that no one sees coming. Kind of like Harrison last year, sure he had huge shoes to fill, and he did. So now you have to look for that next "sleeper" to break out.

Everyone wants Anthony Smith to step up and make up for last years NE debacle.

Troy Needs to Step up and play at 100% for an entire season.

Parker needs to recover fully and be the 1500 yard back we need.

Ben, sure, Holmes, Ward, they are required to do well. Otherwise we fail as an offense.

But I like trying to find that Diamond, Woodley could be that guy, he did step up late last season to get our attention. Timmons, is expected to step up, 1st rounders are expected to perform.

Ominous by his ommision so far would be Willie Colon. You would think as just a second year starter ( 3rd year player) that expectations would be high for him. But one gets the sense from both the Steelers and the fans that Colon is viewed as a limited player who will never develop into anything better than a marginal starter, if that. I mean otherwise how do you explain the Steelers doling out a transition tag to the inconsitent Max Starks?

Kemoeatu may be the one to make us forget about the old Faneca. As far as last years version goes I've already forgotten about him. I still think a lot of Mahans problems resulted from Faneca's less than inspired play. He may have done his job and covered his azz but IMO thats all he did.

I think you got it bass ackwards. From my viewpoint I think much of Faneca's problems last year stemmed from trying to cover for the inadequacies of Mahan. Just think about it, career all pro vs. career scrub, hmmm. where am I going to place the blame? :tap:

I do hope you're right about Kemo filling the bill this season though.

Bad attitude? At training camp he was always among the first to take the field and without fail the last to leave. Working his rear off the entire time. If that's "bad attitude" give me a couple more players similarly plagued. :dang:

I guess we can agree to disagree on Faneca. After all he's the past and this thread concerns the up and coming Steelers. I'd love nothing more than for some of our young o-lineman to develop into solid NFL starters. So here's to Kemo, Colin, Darnell Stapleton or any one of the other young guys on the o-line stepping up.

I think I'll go with Santo for first choice. He's been been going up ever since we drafted him. Despite the early misgivings, he's turned out to be a solid WR. This is the year he cements his place as the top reciever on the team.

Second choice is a split between Woodley and Anthony Smith. They're both young with tons of raw talent that needs a little sharpening. I think both of them will step up to the plate in terms of consistent production and kickin themselves into a higher gear.

Others I'd like to see include, 1. any member of the O-Line squad, 2. Willie come back at 100% 3. more members of the O-Line squad. :wink02: and 4. Heath Miller for pro bowl!

:tt02: The Guy that I am looking to move up the depth chart for the Steelers this upcoming season is gonna open some eyes in my opinion if he can get on the field on the field and get some more experience and his name is:

The guy had a pretty good preseason last year and he played alot in the dime packages this past season, and he makes plays when he is in there it seems like all the time. I would love to see this guy be the future corner for our Steelers in '09

Offense: Max Starks

Holmes gets my vote as well. I think he can take it to another level which would be great since Ward is not getting any younger. More attention on the younger SH would mean less attention on the ageing HW. :tt02:

I dont see holmes if we draft a WR early in the draft.

If so Ward would become our sure number 2 and become even more of a Welker type.

BS. Welker can be a Ward type.

BS. Welker can be a Ward type.

thank you.

just to get things clear, a high pick wr will not impact holmes adversely or prevent him from "breaking out". if anything, another threat would help him.

Holmes should easily be able to move to the number one slot......with Hines out there knockin' the snot out of people.

i know las year was really their breakout year, but i think ben and fast willie improve this season (especially with even the slightest upgrade in line play).

i sure would like to see heath miller break out and get to a pro bowl, though.

The more i think about it the more I believe your wish is about to come true. With the emphasis on reducing Ben's sacks you've got to figure they'll make more of an effort to get the ball to the tight ends. So I think it's conceivable that not only will Heath finally have his 60+ catch breakout season, but I also could envision Spaeth catching 25+ balls. Imagine that, a Steeler team that completes 5 passes per game to its tight ends. :chuckle:

i am going to say anyone on the ST that can hold on to the ball all season when its kicked to them.:flap:

Amen....not only hold on to it, but do something after they manage to catch it, now we're talkin.....
